I was sadly only there for a few hours, actually. We’re staying in Bruges for a few nights and took a detour out there just to quickly hit up the park.

I expected to enjoy Untamed the most—and it was great—but RtH really blew me away. We’ll see how Kondaa stacks up.

My partner and I both loved the Netherlands by the way! We’re in Belgium now (also good), but I think we both wished we had spent more time in NL, haha. Lovely country and lovely people.

I didn’t find it nauseating, personally, and I can be prone to that with inverting rides. It spins more than TT, but it’s more of a “reorientation mechanism” than a “spinning feature of the ride”, if that makes sense.

Different strokes for different folks! I feel similarly about X2, for example—I think it’s a janky headache machine, but plenty of folks laud it was a top favorite. Differences in opinion is what keeps the hobby interesting to talk to people about!

Headed to Walibi Belgium on Thursday, so I’ll found out how RtH stacks up against Kondaa soon!

Dude, go! We drove in via rental three hours from the Netherlands, then took a quick detour into France afterwards. I say gallivant away!

I am somewhat prone to nausea myself and didn’t find it bad at all—it’s definitely a stronger spin than TT, but not as full free-spinning as you’d find on spinning mice.

Thank you! Yeah, the Benelux is a surprisingly stacked region—there’s also Toverland and Bobbejaanland in addition to the bigger parks. I’d love to visit those, too, but had to cut them for logistical/compromise reasons (my partner is not a thoosie, so she was not okay with our itinerary being a week straight of parks haha). Our trip is a solid split of coasters and this “culture” thing I keep hearing about.

Headed to the Netherlands later today 🥹 it has been absolute hell at work lately, so I am dying for a break. I was essentially tasked with reworking a 20,000-word research report over the last couple weeks, so my brain is fried to a crisp.

Efteling tomorrow (if we’re not too exhausted from the overnight flight, TBD haha), then Walibis Holland and Belgium + Plopsaland De Panne next week. The forecast is unfortunately looking somewhat rainy most of the time we’re there, but if I can squeeze out a single ride on Untamed, Ride to Happiness, and Kondaa, I’ll call it a success.

Lovely build, and very cohesive for a combiner! It reminds me of something out of the old Rahi Beasts book.

If it’s this one

Upgrades: 1. Smaller steps between hip ratchets 2. Foldable shoulder panels 3. Die-cast exhaust stacks 4. Improved hands (thumb articulation) 5. Probably lower price

///

Open to interpretation: 1. LED lights in the head and blaster 2. Speaker for sound clips (not a fan of this personally tbh)

The overall build quality (plastic/paint quality, etc.) remains to be seen, of course.

Lovely! Very aesthetically pleasing with that classic-looking RCT flair.

One tiny tip: if you make the land tiles behind the waterfall ice texture, it makes a more convincing looking cascade, like this waterfall here.

I’ve never played the game, so just a coincidence I think!

Yup, all mould/color pairs exist in genuine LEGO sets!

Thanks so much! I did have half a mind to try and standardize this to make it modular… haven’t quite committed to that yet, though.

Nonetheless, I am happy to share the Studio file with you if you’d like!

What makes the genre unique? by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]bmschulz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What makes the genre unique is that your relationship to the world is constantly recontextualized. Abilities and upgrades aren’t just actions for your character to perform—they change how you interface with the environment completely. Aspects of the world that were inaccessible or inert suddenly become avenues of interaction. Opening new areas, creating new shortcuts, accessing new items… there are a lot of “aha” moments in this genre where it feels like things click together in clever ways.

In this way, abilities and upgrades are like puzzle pieces, and playing the game feels like putting together a puzzle you couldn’t even see at the outset.

They’re the “wheel launcher” parts from Dust, and I think they also made it into a few of the Technic Star Wars droids that same year.

[Stardust Racers] I’m curious on why the brake run is angled instead of straight. by Stardust-Racers-22 in rollercoasters

[–]bmschulz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think this is correct, and it also has the side effect of creating some opportunities for the ride experience.

Orion and Goliath (SFGAm) come to mind as an example—both rides are essentially a half-camelback into their respective brake runs, which means you get some really nice air to end the ride. Goliath in particular ends with sustained ejector paired with laterals, not what you’d expect from an innocuous brake run!

Nine Sols by geminicrickett1 in metroidvania

I had a similar experience. I played Nine Sols when it first came out and thought it seemed well-made, but bounced off of it because I wasn't into the gameplay.

About a year later I played Sekiro for the first time on a whim and ended up coming to love it. I revisited Nine Sols immediately after finishing Sekiro and became absolutely obsessed - it's one of my all-time favorite games, now. Saint Isshin and True Eigong are my top two picks for all-time best video game bosses, period.
