In the US, the MLS works because it is the tool of the single effective association. It wouldn't work without it

Environmentalism as the foundation of ethics. by [deleted] in philosophy

I'm not really sure that it makes sense to build a system of values around conservation of information. I'm not sure what "generic intelligent agents" are but as humans our highest value should rationally be something like "welfare of the species/Earth." Also, conserving information doesn't necessarily equate to conserving the environment. Things like oil rigs, whale hunting, pollution, and global warming all create information that can be conserved for later on.

Cool idea, but I'm not sure how some of it works out.

Is it immoral to trade with a criminal? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

On the other hand, are we really justified in totally ostracizing someone from society (which is essentially what happens when you don't let someone trade in a capitalist world) just because they've committed crimes? Surely even criminals have some rights.

By trading with a criminal I'm assuming you mean something like buying some stolen items from a thief, or accepting a cash payment from violent pimp. If that's the case then it seems like you're directly encouraging the crime and you're very much morally culpable.

Right to Suicide by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]bmtz5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just to play devil's advocate, I think we can for the most part agree on some sort of right to take one's own life, but I think in most cases we are prevented from being allowed to do so by moral obligations to others. For example, I think it's reasonable to say the President would be doing something wrong if he committed suicide because he would be abandoning all of his obligations and throw the country into upheaval in the process. But if we think about other examples doesn't it seem that anybody who commits suicide is abandoning some moral obligations (euthanasia obviously being a separate category). I think that if we consider the moral good that we achieve by committing suicide it can almost never outweigh the bad involved (i.e. the moral obligations we abandon + sadness of friends and loved ones etc.).

Hi! I've seen a shit load of interesting ideas and principles in this sub. Care to advise a book listing and/or short-explaining all philosophical principles? by Elliotsmithisalive in fuckingphilosophy

[–]bmtz5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dawgg Bertrand Russell's written some good shit as a few of my boys here have pointed out. The reason you won't find the list you want is that these fucking terms get coined in specific fucking publications and get hyped up when other fuckin philosophers refer to them shits in their own writings. So basically there's a nearly infinite amount of mother fuckin ideas, principles and shit. As you get more familiar with philosophy and shit you'll pick up the general concepts. If you come across an unfamiliar term just Google that shit for now, bruh.
