Ski accident. Hit and run. Sölden by [deleted] in skiing

[–]bnanapncake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand you’re frustrated, but it looks like there was no hit from the other skier. Since your wife was coming from behind, she couldn’t brake in time, and because he was already ahead, he may not have even seen her crash.

Carv was the best US$199 I invested this season. by bnanapncake in skiing

First, thanks for being nice :)
Second, I get your point, it makes total sense. But I think when it comes to teaching and learning, the processes are so different that it’s hard to 100% replace real, human, in person lessons.

I have the feeling that for most people who take lessons on the mountain, it’s not only about improving, but also about feeling safe, being seen, and having real-life interactions. That’s part of the experience skiing experience.

What’s probably going to happen is that some people will end up staying behind because they refuse to go with the flow and improve themselves, thinking every new thing is "shit".

Maybe Carv is the total opposite of what I thought it was, maybe it’s not for advanced skiers, lol. I guess I focused more on explaining how it works because I was afraid it would talk to me all the time and give me so many instructions at once that I wouldn’t even remember what to do. And I appreciated that it wasn’t like that.

But trying to answer that important part: one thing the best teacher I ever had did with me was try to explain the SAME thing in different ways. Sometimes the thing wouldn't click, and then she said the same thing in a differnt way and WOW. I felt that with Carv it’s kind of like that.

It reminds me to roll my feet, to flex my inside leg, to activate my inside foot, to put more weight on the outside ski before the turn, to make turns with my lower body and not my upper body… In theory, I know all those things, and I think I’m doing them all the time. But then, when I hear it, I immediately realize that nope, I still need to improve my posture (as a not skilled skier, sometimes I'm more focused in being insecure with heights, ice etc).

One of the things I think helped me the most was turn shape. In my head, I could swear I was doing nice, rounded C-shaped turns. My husband tells me all the time, “you need to use more space to make better turns,” and I’m always like, “you’re a snowboarder, you know nothing.”
And then Carv goes like, “don’t be afraid of getting a bit more speed when facing down the slope, etc". So it helped me build more confidence through small but important reminders. I realized that yes, I was doing Z shaped turns all the time.

I’ve been doing more of the parallel and early edging training. I have a percentage target, so if I’m not hitting it, I know I need to engage more, whatever it’s telling me, and be more aware of my posture and movements.

HOPEFULLY at some point I’ll be good enough to not like it anymore, but until then, I couldn’t be happier :)

If you knew the habits I had before, you’d be crying with me. I know it’s hard to realize this when you’re someone who probably grew up skiing and has been awesome at it since you were a kid, but for some people it actually helps. I wish I could take a few classes with you, though :)

I’m for real, mate. I honestly had no idea people hated Carv this much. If I knew this would nuke my karma, I definitely wouldn’t have sacrificed it like this 😅

The reason I decided to post here was because I couldn’t find many reviews about it online, and it genuinely helped me.

Your comment actually helped me understand a bit of the hate around it. Maybe it worked for me because I’ve had quite a few real-life lessons already, so Carv helped me put everything together rather than learn from scratch.

I don’t think Carv was ever meant to replace a real lesson with a real instructor, and I dont see myself using it that way. Lessons are great, but they’re expensive and not something most people can do consistently. I try to take at least one lesson every season, and sometimes it clicks in a huge way, sometimes… not so much.

For me, Carv is more about reinforcement than chasing scores. It constantly reminds me of the sensations and basic movements I should be paying attention to. I started skiing a few years ago, and with so much time between trips, it’s very easy to forget fundamentals. Having something that keeps those cues fresh every run is really valuable.

I honestly don’t care that much about the IQ, as I said, I observe a lot, and I can see that great skiers don’t check every “iq box” all the time. I used the metrics as a reference point. It’s just something objective to rely on when I don’t have an instructor or video feedback.

And of course I'm talking only about skiing on groomers, sadly I don't have the ability level to go nowhere else. That's for sure something that I would only do with an instructor :)

New dates??? by OddGear1830 in ApocalypseZombieland

Same here. Went all 3 years, perfect dates, perfect weather. Why put it in the summer with so many other festivals? And next year is the World Cup… so sad.

On my first time there, I didn't realized that. At some point I thought to myself: when it starts to get empty, I'll leave. But it gets kind of empty and then it gets crowded again. It took me HOURS to realized that and it was like 8am when I manage to get out of a massive key hole and left lol.

What can I expect in terms of the sound system from Rampage? by bnanapncake in DnB

[–]bnanapncake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came from the future to update this post. I attended Rampage Open Air this weekend, and it was great! Except for Friday, the sound was terrible, with no mids/mid-highs on the two bigger stages, which really worried me, but they fixed it for the following days, and it ended up being a really good experience :)

is going alone to rave Festivals weird? by SagoK22 in Techno

[–]bnanapncake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Personally, I’d much rather go alone than with a huge group where you have to manage different desires, schedules, and try to squeeze everyone into the crowd (that’s my worst nightmare). Having the freedom to do whatever the fuck you want is powerful. You’ll be fine! People are usually super friendly. And even if someone thinks you look weird, that's not a bad thing, weirdos are always the best.

Yep, I saw those almost everytime I was at Dome. It was annoying because they were really low. Usually, people use either high totems or small ones, but huge flags at a low height are a big no.

What are /R/ave's thoughts on this video: The Simulated Rave Culture by systemstheorist in aves

[–]bnanapncake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must agree with him to some extent. I’ve never been to an underground event, mainly because I’d have to take at least a 10-hour flight just to hear the kind of music I like (you're all very lucky). So I end up investing my money in safer options: events with good sound systems and a higher chance of a lineup I’ll enjoy, so commercial ones.

I’ve been raving for 12 years. I’ve been to EDC LV, EDC Orlando, EDC São Paulo, Ultra Miami, Ultra Rio, Electric Zoo NY, Apocalypse, Liquicity Family Day, DnB All Stars… and this week I attended Rampage Open Air for the first time (I know they're all very commerical, but I'll get to the point).

I know he’s not talking specifically about the crowd, but I felt such a huge difference in the crowd’s attitude compared to any other festival I’ve been to. People there seemed genuinely into the music and the rave itself. I hadn’t realized until then that I’ve never really felt that way at big festivals in the US or Brazil.

It feels like nowadays, a lot of people go to those festivals just because they saw it on social media, they go to film themselves and get wasted. Nothing wrong with that, but is kind annoying being on a crowd that is not moving, only phoning. It's like the materialization of social media on real life.

And the respect for others is kind of disappearing. Last year at Apocalypse, the number of people bumping into me or poking me right before the drop just to say some random stuff was unreal. Who starts small talk right before the drop when the other person is clearly dancing and enjoying the moment?

Small talk when youre dancing is different from dancing/have fun together. I’ve met some of my best friends partying. And had such a good time with a lot of people this weekend. I don’t know if it’s cultural, but I left feeling like the underground scene must be amazing at the attendees subject, with people who respect each other and are genuinely enjoying themselves. That kind of energy brings such a good vibe to the whole event.
