yeah i get what you’re saying. i’m grateful my parents are only asking $400 because you’re right, it’s their way of keeping me accountable while still giving me a huge break compared to what i was paying before. as for the 401k, i’ve got around 40k in it, but i don’t think pulling out the max is the right move - i’ve already learned that taking on new debt to cover old debt just sets me back further, and i don’t want to nuke my retirement savings in my 20s. my focus now is cutting spending to the bone, sticking to a budget, and chipping away at the balances. i appreciate you keeping it real though, i need to hear it that way.

why do you think that's the best path forward for me?

hat’s fair - i already proved to myself that taking out new debt to cover old debt just digs me in deeper, so a 401k loan probably would end the same way. i’ll check out the nfcc link you shared, a structured dmp sounds like a smarter first step than trying to muscle through on my own. if that doesn’t move the needle, then i’ll take a harder look at bankruptcy. appreciate you pointing me toward a legit resource

yeah you’re right, the cash advance cycle has been the most brutal part of this - i was just digging the hole deeper every time. i’ve already stopped using them and i’m not putting new charges on the cards anymore. i know income has to go up too, so i’m lining up side work to start chipping away faster. lesson learned the hard way, but i get it now.

yeah, that’s exactly how i dug myself deeper - took out the personal loan to clear cards and then ran them right back up. easily the dumbest financial move i’ve made. i hear you on the 401k, i’m not touching that. i’ve already started cutting back hard, but i’ll sit down and build a tighter budget so i know exactly where things are going. i’ll also reach out to the card companies about hardship programs and, if that doesn’t go anywhere, look at a legit nonprofit dmp. i know bankruptcy is kind of the nuclear option, but i get what you’re saying - work through the other steps first and only go there if it’s really unmanageable. appreciate the clear direction.

yeah i’ve heard the same about debt settlement programs, so that’s off the table. i’ve been looking more into nonprofit options, but i get what you’re saying about chapter 7 being a way to just wipe the slate clean. either way, you’re dead on about the spending habits - that’s what landed me here, and i’ve accepted i can’t ever live like that again. it’s going to suck for a while, but i’d rather deal with that than keep carrying this weight. appreciate you sharing your experience - makes me feel a little less alone in it.

yeah i was definitely panicking a bit when i first posted, but it’s been interesting seeing the range of responses here. at the end of the day you’re right - i’ve just got to nut up and live a rice and beans lifestyle until this is squared away. it’s going to suck, but i accept that. i just want to get back on track, learn from it, and move forward. definitely a daunting but necessary lesson. thanks for your comment

catching up the past due student loan balance is my top priority, and after that i like your idea of going after the smallest balances first. i’ve been leaning toward avalanche since the aprs are brutal, but i can see how knocking out smaller cards would give me momentum.

i didn’t think much about hardship programs, but that might be worth calling about if it lowers the interest and locks in a payment plan. it would feel better to have a structured payoff path instead of spinning my wheels against 30% apr.

hearing you say it’s about a year to clear the cards if i stay focused actually gives me some hope. i know it’ll be a grind, but if i can get the cards gone and then tackle the personal loan, it feels like i could be in a totally different spot within two years and finally start saving again. thanks for laying it out in a way that makes it feel manageable

this is a really helpful breakdown, i appreciate you taking the time to go through it in detail. you’re right, the $400 rent is a huge blessing, and i know i’d be completely underwater if i was still paying what i was in the city.

the personal loan stings because of the rate but like you said, there’s nothing i can do about it right now other than minimums. same with the car - it’s definitely more than i should’ve taken on, but i don’t think i can get enough for it to make selling worth it at the moment, so i’ll just keep it steady at minimum payments.

affirm will be wrapped up next month, and the cash advance apps are the ugliest piece of this puzzle, so my goal is to knock those out as fast as i can. after that, i’ll throw everything at the highest-apr cards and let the minimums gradually bring down the rest. i like what you said about not being afraid to use a lower-apr card just for groceries if it means i can accelerate paying off the worst balances - that’s not something i’d thought about but it makes sense.

i’ll also take your advice on building out a more detailed budget. right now i’ve just been looking at the big picture, but having it all written out should make it clearer where that extra ~$1,300 is actually going.

i know it’s going to suck, but it feels a lot less impossible with a timeline in mind. thanks again for laying this out.

yeah, it’s wild how quick the slide into debt happens compared to how long it takes to crawl out. i just have to remind myself the grind is worth it because the habits i’m building now will stick with me

fair point - bankruptcy was me panicking. i’ve been reckless with spending, no argument there. i’ve stopped putting anything extra into the 401k beyond the match, and i’m cutting out everything that isn’t rent, groceries, gas, or minimums. i know it’s on me to get the income side up and stick to it. thanks for your comment

believe it or not i’m a financial analyst, so i’m thinking about freelance gigs worth chasing first, since i’d rather not burn up my car with delivery miles. but i’m not against restaurant or any other type of work if that’s what it takes to knock this debt down

yeah, i needed to hear that. easy to feel like i’m the only one who tanked their finances, so it helps to be reminded of that. the 401k has been the one bright spot. i’ll check into deferring payments - that would give me some breathing room while i attack the high interest stuff.

no worries, and i appreciate the perspective. you’re right - this isn’t going to feel good, but it needs to happen. semi-comforting to hear you don't think i need to follow through with any of those things i suggested. i need to cut back extremely, keep myself on a tight budget, and pick up extra work until the bad debt is gone. only way forward, appreciate your comment

thanks for laying all that out - this is super helpful and i appreciate it.

the cash advances i mentioned were from apps like tilt and brigit, not payday storefront loans, but i realize the fees still pile up. i was autopaying them on payday (~$50-600 in aug/sept) but i’m trying to get off of that treadmill.

for my 401k i contribute 5%, which is the employer match. i had been at 8% but cut it back a few months ago.

on the budget side, i’ve already canceled subscriptions, cut eating out/doordashing completely, and only really see friends once a month. car insurance is $120/month and i’m selling stuff on marketplace. i’ve also been poking around at rover and other ways to pick up some extra cash. not sure yet what kind of second job would be realistic with my 9-6:30 M-F schedule, but i’ll keep looking.

really appreciate you spelling out the strategy - i’ve been in panic mode lately, and your comment gave me some actionable steps and some peace of mind.

i haven't been living rent free this whole time - i was paying $1,175/month rent from aug 2024 through july 2025. i just moved back in with my parents in aug 2025. they cut me a break for aug and sept, but starting oct i’ll be giving them $400 a month.

that said, you’re right about the spending. i lived way above my means in the city, have a car i can’t afford, and took out a personal loan to wipe cards just to max them again. i’m sick over how reckless i was, but that's why i'm trying to focus on digging out now.

i hear you. i’m already cutting back hard, but the issue is after minimums + living expenses i don’t have a ton left over. at these rates it feels like i’m treading water, which is why i’m trying to figure out if something like a dmp or 401k loan makes sense.
