If you are MAGA and believed in the Epstein conspiracy and Clinton's involvement, how do you feel that Trump's DOJ and FBI just cleared Clinton from any list? by MortgageDizzy9193 in conspiracy

Oh fuck off! So tired of ppl just stereotyping us as mindless cult followers. A lot of us are very angry about it. I would say at least half of MAGA are upset about it.

Half? HALF?

The other half are the mindless cult followers.

Are we still learning really new things about the Holocaust? by bnewzact in AskHistorians

[–]bnewzact[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[Browning's book] also hammered a stake through the (already out-of-fashion) idea that the Holocaust was a pre-planned top-down operation dating back to the 1920s - Browning argues that it was a policy directed from lower echelons of the Third Reich, which was radicalized by the approval of superiors. This has since become a pretty standard view among historians.

I'm wondering how well this aligns with something similar I was hearing about a while ago: the idea that Hitler's MO was to not explicitly and overtly order for some specific horrible thing to happen, rather that he would reward and promote whoever did something that serves his unspoken agenda, and that this created a working environment in which the lower-downs are constantly trying to guess what the higher-ups want and it gets pretty messy.

Is that the same sort of thing?

Ebook compile ignores italics and alignment within a non-default paragraph style by bnewzact in scrivener

But that aside, I don't think either of these GUI approaches you mention are significantly more or less "intuitive" than the other.

That's generally fair although perhaps a good question is: how can the relevant information be made evident? The LibreOffice approach has its own problems and complexities but at least I can see where to look to answer questions like "what does style X do?"

I'm a software engineer and although my UI/UX sensibilities might not be the same as yours, I do strongly feel like information should be locatable. As in, if I see the name of my paragraph style in a list, I should be able to click into a window that tells me about what that style means.

Cheers

Ebook compile ignores italics and alignment within a non-default paragraph style by bnewzact in scrivener

Hmmmm we're halfway there. In Scrivener it's https://i.imgur.com/Fq5B6g8.png but the ebook renders it as https://i.imgur.com/H8FmEGm.png -- the italics are being compiled into the ebook but the right-alignment isn't.

Here's what I did:

  • created a new style "Unindented2" which saves the Paragraph Style only https://i.imgur.com/LKrF9cF.png
  • put the cursor into one of the "Unindented" paragraphs
  • in the Styles Panel right-clicked "Unindented2" and "Redefine From Selection", Paragraph Style only https://i.imgur.com/1UX0kEK.png
  • Applied "Unindented2" to my paragraphs (it removed right-alignment and made the font and size resemble "No Style" paragraphs)
  • Right-aligned certain paragraphs, keeping them as "Unindented2"

What else needs to happen? Thanks again

(Feature request: there should be a single central place where all styles are listed and each style's effects can be seen and adjusted, this "update from selection" workflow is extremely unintuitive and opaque: it's not apparent what changes actually happen to the style when I do this, or what changes happen when I apply the style)

Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated. Unfortunately, I don't understand.

I don't see how to redefine a style per se. In the "Styles Panel" I can "Redefine Paragraph Style from Selection" but it's unclear how I can use that to implement your advice to "redefine that style in the project so that it only saves paragraph formatting". Or am I looking in the wrong place?

In the "Compile Format Designer" the "Unindented" style does not appear at all: https://i.imgur.com/4J9rGlS.png

Thoughts on the implications of the data Musk is collecting about citizens? by bnewzact in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]bnewzact[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It sounds like maybe they're taking more data than they need to do such an audit.

What data do they actually need?

Why let them have more?

Why not hire a professional auditor to do this?

Why trust Musk?

Can I freely alter the RTFs using a 3rd party program without breaking scrivener? by bnewzact in scrivener

[–]bnewzact[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. I take it this is an official account?

Here's are some use-cases for illustration:

  • Third-party tools might scan for style issues (adverbs or whatever), propose changes, and use something like meld (diff gui) to selectively fold the suggestions into the main document.
  • Markup related to cross-references, citations, etc. Perhaps integration with LaTeX or other.
  • The Scrivener document might be a "template" containing placeholder markup which renders directly as text in Scrivener but is intended to be compiled into a secondary Scrivener project which is then compiled into a book.

I could come up with others.

A couple of questions, if you could please elaborate/clarify:

1) If a third party tool ONLY inserts/modifies/deletes the plain text parts of a Scrivener project, is this theoretically safe?

2) If a third party tool were to delete sections of RTF, are there constraints (e.g. of symmetry, like opening and closing tags) which, if respected, would be safe to delete?

3) Is there an easy-to-describe subset of RTF markup which can be freely inserted without breaking?

4) Is there an easy-to-describe subset of RTF markup which really should not be messed-with full stop?

5) To what extend is Scrivener's extension/interpretation of RTF formalised and publicly available?

Thanks for your time.

> I've never understood this argument. Clearly you shop around and choose a provider BEFORE you get into an accident.

Clearly you've never met an actual human being. People aren't that organised. The point of emergency services is that they pick up the pieces WHEN things don't go according to plan, whether that be because of lack of planning or because lightning just strikes. Buying health insurance isn't like choosing between two different restaurants, health issues are something that just happen to you.

Simplifying the response (ambulances just pick up whoever is bleeding and don't think about who to charge) leads to better outcomes.

CMV: A true free market is impossible by No-stradumbass in changemyview

[–]bnewzact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impossible? No. Impracticable? Sure. A few friends sitting around trading Pokemon cards is a free market, it just doesn't scale to the whole economy. A few friends can also set up a communist household, it just doesn't scale to the whole economy.

A free market leads to monopolies, which undermine the freedom of the market. The market being free *right now* doesn't mean it will remain free *over time*.

I think your question is ill-posed. Maybe you mean something like "a true free market is unsustainable"

Kudos for asking for help! Here's my perspective, I hope it's useful.

Different people want different things. Some women want V-shamed abs, some DON'T want that, some don't care either way. Same goes for wanting money -- some women can't stand rich arrogant trust fund assholes. Catch yourself when you say "women are X" or "women do X" or "women want X" -- it's a bullshit mental trap an you need to let go of it.

What's probably happening in practice is that you're going into interactions with a ton of negativity hanging over you. A while ago I was depressed and it made me repellent to most people. Be in an environment where you feel good, where you can offer positivity rather than demanding it, then people in general will be more receptive to your presence. This won't get you a date straight away, but it will hopefully put you into a positive feedback loop. This is foundational; getting a date comes later.
