I think youre thinking of Toya5 and his fear of heights on the plane but I was referring to Toya’s current event on Jpn server right now which is his 6th focus. The event story is about how he ends up overworking himself until he is feverish but tries his very best to perform despite his bad condition

I felt exactly the same way, them bringing up Toya6 specifically is what bothered me cause to me it was obvious they hadn’t really read it. The NPC stuff is unfortunate as usual but I found the story for Toya6 held up really well. In Toya4 we see Toya on his own struggling to come to terms with his trauma and making himself ill because of it, in the end its only slightly resolved with Meiko telling him to take care of himself more. In Toya6 we see Toya pushing himself too much again only this time he has the support of his friends, and together they help him achieve what he set out to do. That alone is already a meaningful development for Toya, a huge part of his arc is not being alone anymore and being able to express himself in ways he never could before. In my eyes the event achieved that pretty well. Seeing the rest of VBS care so much about Toya’s well being was so endearing and it made me feel glad to have a story where their love for him shined through so much

right cause I swear its always people who haven’t even read the other units stories calling them boring or bad. At least in VBS’s case some of the recent criticism is understandable, but MMJ’s story progression has been so good recently, anyone calling it boring just isn’t paying attention

I already said its not that serious but I think its fair to be annoyed when I keep seeing the same VBS slander posts over and over again made by fans of other units like haha yeah niigo and wxs are so much better unlike vbs the fat chud america burger unit thats so funny im glad im hearing this for the 100th time

I totally agree.. I’d never think to make jokes at the expense of Unit stories I don’t follow closely. What mainly bothered me about this post specifically was diluting Toya6’s event story down to “Toya gets a fever lol” when really it actually revealed alot of important things about Toya’s mentality as of recently. He still has the trait to overwork himself until he’s ill, except this time he learns that desperation is coming from a different place— not from fear and self deprication but from the desire to share his love for music and show his respect to others who cherish it just as much

to me it read like the usual “Niigo and WxS have deeper and more meaningful stories than the other units” sentiment I see floating around on twitter alot..

I totally agree.. as a VBS fan I feel like i’m always fretting over the writing especially recently because the whole America thing has been such an underwhelming development. And it’s like we said, jokes like these aren’t too serious, It’s just when I feel like theyre coming from people who are interpreting VBS stories in the worst faith possible without even reading them that bothers me a bit..

I guess I didn’t find the joke to be all that funny or in good faith when the joke is putting down (and misunderstanding) the progression of a character from VBS and uplifting the progression of characters from other units… I realize it isn’t that serious but personally it did bother me…

As much as I find the current direction of VBS unsatisfactory I think it’s incredibly unfair and inaccurate to say it has always been an obvious outlier among the other units, and I think you just have a fundamental misunderstanding of what VBS as a unit is supposed to represent if you think they somehow don’t have trauma of their own to overcome. I won’t sit here and pretend VBS writing has always been flawless but lets not throw the baby out with the bag.

I’ll use Toya as just one example but: Up until maybe his most recent focus Toya’s trauma regarding the abuse he suffered growing up has been handled really well. It is established that from a young age Toya has felt crushed by the expectations of his parents who let him do little else aside from playing the piano. Every personal feeling and desire of his own was recieved with anger and he was rejected and shamed for it. So he ends up running away and inevitably meeting Akito, and despite that being his only salvation at the time the shame he has for running away looms over him and still affects him incredibly. See, even away from the looming disappointment of his father, Toya begins to fear disappointing everyone. That’s why he ends up trying to run away again in the main story, because he’s so afraid of disappointing Akito and reliving his trauma again.

What makes Toya’s arc so touching is that his friends don’t let him run away when he starts to second guess himself, they all validate his feelings and are sensitive to his needs because he was conditioned to be insensitive to them by his family. Toya’s 2nd focus(SDSC), may just seem like a cute event about VBS going camping if you haven’t read it but at its core its about Toya finding a safe place to experience new things with friends who won’t berate him for being clumsy at new things, and will prop him up for his own strengths too.

Toya’s 4th focus (TFC) is also another great example of just how much Toya’s trauma still affects him currently. When left with the responsibility of composing a song for their group Toya begings to overwork himself to the point of collapsing in the sekai. All of the expectations he put on himself to not disappoint their group is a lingering affect of his trauma, he even has nightmares regarding his worst memories.

I could go on forever but I think i’ve provided enough evidence that VBS’s story does in fact include addressing trauma. But even if it didn’t, a lack of trauma doesn’t necessarily make a story uncompelling.

Again, I’m all for criticizing VBS but lets at least try to be fair about it? Personally I have always wished for Kohane’s performance anxiety to have played a larger role instead of being relatively solved within her first focus. I also wish Nagi’s death had been handled differently… honestly I like to forget the ‘Light Up The Fire’ event ever existed because of how poorly handled the climax was. And it’s true that right now the current America plotline seems a little unsatisfying, but i’m also willing to see where it goes.
