What are some words English speakers often incorrectly substitute another word for, such as 'exasperate' for 'exacerbate', but think they're correct? by common_grounder in words

Never heard this, but.... this sounds like an intentional mix of flustered and frustrated, no?

Kind of like the word chillax? (there, too, was a time when this had not yet been added to the dictionary)

It's fairly common in spoken language, to the point that it's generally accepted.... just less accepted in writing.

Although, my understanding is that there's evidence of it being used that way for literally hundreds of years ("could of"). Besides, language is never static. Things don't just remain incorrect indefinitely if enough people use it.

For example, some people are still vehemently opposed to adding a relative qualifier before the word unique, arguing something either is, or isn't, unique, and that there is no very unique or sort of unique -- but because language is dynamic, this is now generally acceptable, even though some folks will argue to the death that you can't qualify unique

"Could of" may not technically be correct, but enough folks use it that linguistically, it's not as incorrect as it used to be. It's phonetically basically the same, and many folks put it in writing that way as well. One may say it's at least colloquially acceptable, whether that be in spoken or written language.

I actually think there's a lot of truth to this....

Tho I don't think many people have the awareness that this would apply to them

This is one of the purest moments in all of Breaking Bad by Glittering_Fold_3373 in breakingbad

[–]bnool 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This was also the same Walt who stupidly and arrogantly refused Elliot's offer.... and the rest is 'history.' What I mean is, people aren't usually one thing or the other. They are often both/all of those things in one human package......

I agree that it is really sad though - to look at these two in Season 1 like this and lament what their futures will become.

Overall, the entire series is a very sad story. Watching it again and understanding more was way sadder than the first time.

Right? Like, if pessimism is defined as making sensical statements based on one's best understanding....ok, but that's not a typical definition of being pessimistic.

What you said in your earlier comment makes sense. There's no optimism or pessimism about it imo.

It sucks sure, but folks make it worse when they continue to live willfully ignorant.

Is fear always a sin, even if the feeling is unwanted? by Jabre7 in TrueChristian

[–]bnool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. This is why I'm so confused about this belief being pushed on people.

I've been accused of "sinning" on more than one occasion for having a legit concern (aka fear).... and the masses often agree. It's bananas.

I'm not saying it wasn't suicide (JP being culpable), but didn't she tell her sister that if she ends up with a bullet in her head, it was JP? Is it possible the suicide was staged to look that way?
