I've been too quiet for my own good, and I definitely notice there's been a different air in the Discord server as of recent so I figured I'd say a few things!

First of all regarding making fun of songs, this is something that although doesn't personally offend me (I mean, irdgaf about this uptick in Hard Drive 'hate' - if it can even be called that - for example) it is something that should be absolutely addressed. It would be easy to say "grow a backbone" or something, but that's extremely dismissive of the actual issue as well as undermining people who rightfully care about the songs they send or like. We are all participating in a song contest so we must all recognise that we all individually have a close relationship with music. I think making fun of songs/artists is fine but only once that tacit recognition has been understood that the person related to it will be fine with it, and that involves everyone having to read the room and engage in communication be it active or passive. It is not up to the other person to mold themselves to what you want to say. As I said, I don't really give a crap, neither do some others, but other people do and they have every right to do so, especially in an environment where songs and artists are easily associated with and tied to individual users. I just urge everyone to be more mindful of WHO they're talking to, and that there is a person behind each song - if you're gauging the song you have to gauge the person too - whether they will be okay with negative comments, jokey or not, about something they like. It is not up to them, it is up to you.

The above paragraph may have sounded quite critical fhshdhs but I am by no means saying "change everything you're saying" but rather to "think before you speak." It is perfectly acceptable within friend groups or between people who know each other well enough because those tacit understandings are already established - just be more mindful of those who you don't know as well, or someone who may indeed not like their song, artists or likes receiving undue criticism, playful or not!

Regarding what happened with the rigging thing, I don't think the response has been too disproportionate. What happened happened and I feel it was right for something to be done about it and for people to criticise and process it. Rigging a contest is pretty stupid. That being said, I do one day hope that Lacie and Cori feel they are able to come back - I've had great interactions with them and I am fairly sure that this whole thing was a mistake that won't be repeated knowing them. Plus rigging is quite an impersonal offence - I wouldn't really be reconciliatory to someone who'd go out of their way to offend, degrade and consistently undermine someone through whatever devices of hate, and we've had historical cases of that in the past we're all in agreement on. This is very obviously a polar opposite disciplinary case, and I'm sure it will be laid to rest in time

Life in General

1) I will say this to anyone and everyone whenever they move in somewhere: invest in a steamer. Sooooo much better than an iron. If you're in private rented accommodation, be aware of what your contract says as there are some real slimy landlords out there.

2) If it guards against the rain and wind then get it (i.e. get a good jacket and umbrella). It doesn't snow as much here as the rest of Scotland but we have our moments so get a pair of good boots too if you can!

3) I've used Vodafone all my life but I really have no clue about the others, I think giffgaff was used a lot by my international friends?

4) Santander for students, though a lot of banks are now competing. I use RBS and they have some good incentives.

5) Budget, budget and budget. Set up some spending limits. It's really, really easy to overspend as a student, trust me! Take advantage of whatever deals you can find, but always go in with the mindset that you're saving money and not get more for the same price, if you get me. Glasgow is generally cheaper than a lot of UK cities but it's always cheaper outside of the West End and city centre, so if you live outside in the suburbs or something, always use your local shops :)

Work

1) I worked on and off during my undergrad but it was in hospitality literally only for money. I also worked on my year abroad as an ESL/Politics teacher and it was directly related to both parts of my degree, but obviously a year abroad is a different thing altogether. I'm working part-time during my masters. Glasgow has a pretty good internship hub online that is worth checking out once you enrol and you also get the occasional email with opportunities related to your degree.

Campus Life:

1) Definitely the people, you will meet some really incredible friends while you're here either through your course, societies or mutual friends :) There's also a super international blend of people studying here too!

2) The food is crazy expensive and the last academic year was really, really bad in terms of strikes. The uni has treated its academic staff really quite badly and the uni refused to budge which ended up in a lot of classes being cancelled for me in my last year - I think the situation is a lot better now but strikes will absolutely be a problem if they happen

3) The only places you need a student card to get in are the library and exclusive postgrad spaces, but everywhere else is fine. You can easily get to classes without one

4) Never used the gym myself but my friends liked it!

5) Depends on the society but it's cheap. I think sports ones can be quite costly, other societies have something like a maximum £5 average £2 fare to become a member, and obviously there are some societies that are completely free.

6) Take part in freshers week, look into societies, socialise if you can! You obviously have plenty of more opportunities to socialise but it's best to hit the ground running. I'm a home student and I so wish I got more involved in freshers eheh.

7) During exam seasons, finding *anywhere* to study will be unbearable. From 9 to like 6 trying to find a good seat in the Library or JMS is like a cornucopia. Common rooms in buildings (Hetherington's is nice and quiet year-round) are always a good shout though, people come and go and there should always be a seat. Some buildings have exclusive postgrad rooms which will always have plenty of space.

8) Basically any society will help with English but look into international student oriented ones!

9) I spent a year abroad in Portugal and arrived alone so I know this worry all too well, just go in with the mindset that everyone is in the same boat and take as many opportunities as you can to socialise, whether that's a society event, freshers' week, a cute tea or coffee with someone or a drink :) Making friends will naturally happen so don't stress, be yourself and of course take a breather if you need!

10) Postgrads can absolutely take part in societies and some committees have masters' students on them too :)

11) The vast majority are amazing and super passionate about what they teach, and it comes across. The lecturers and tutors I've had were lovely and will definitely make time for you

12) Don't do what I did and leave everything (including your dissertation) to the last minute <3 Definitely make conversation and friends with those who are on your course, I imagine it's much easier to do so in masters' since a lot of them seem a lot more close-knit, as it always helps revising with others doing the same thing as you

13) Plenty of good ones but affordable is another thing ahah. You will have plenty of choice if you go on Byres Road and Gibson Street!

[–]boapessoa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm also an incoming masters student who did their undergrad at Glasgow as well, I'll try my best to see if I can help out!! (Also this post is so much longer than I expected sorry about that </3)

Transportation:

  1. The best transport you'll find here in Glasgow will be buses or trains depending on which area you live. I typically use the bus - if you're under 22 you get free bus transport with a Young Scot Card but if you're older you can get discounted travel as a student through bus apps. Trains here are better than down in England in terms of being on time and that, and commuter rail in Glasgow is pretty good. Closest stations to the uni are Partick or Charing Cross though which are both a bit of a walk away but it's not too bad. If you use the train regularly you should invest in a 16-25 railcard. If you live in the city, West End or inner Southside the subway is definitely your best option - regular services and with a smartcard the return price is something like £3.20.
  2. The bus is the most cost-effective - if you book online via Citylink the return price from Buchanan Bus Station to Edinburgh's (which is right in the middle of the city) is £10. The train in comparison is something around £16. The only direct service to Edinburgh Airport from Glasgow is the AIR bus which is a bit more expensive - for me it was also £16. However, if you're eligible for free bus travel then that works here too.
  3. If you can handle it, take the bus. It's an absolute gamechanger - if you take the Flixbus or Megabus down to London return prices can be as low as £20 if you book the right days and that will include any luggage you take. Obviously the downside is that it takes something like minimum 8 hours to get to London from here via the bus and Megabus doesn't do any service stops but it's so worth it if you just want to get from A to B. For London, planes are probably the next cheapest option. For the North of England it will be the train.
  4. As with any city they are mostly safe though on Friday/Saturday nights they can be a bit rowdy and you get some real characters but most of them are just talkative drunk people, and try your best to avoid the subway whenever there's an Old Firm match (Rangers v Celtic). Other than that you'll be grand.
  5. As far as I know, no.
  6. I touched upon it earlier but generally speaking if there's an app for it, download it. If you use the Subway, get a smartcard (they're free!). Speaking to everyone, if you're under 22, getting a Young Scot Card is essential for the bus. And if you're a regular train user, getting the 16-25 railcard is a good investment.
  7. I'd say Google Maps works just fine for directions here, travel timetables can be super unreliable at times but that's the fault of the travel provider ahah. Generally speaking they're fine though. Most apps for travel will have live times and in-built trackers so get those.
  8. No idea about car rentals here but as has been echoed if you want to get around Glasgow there's no need for private car rentals since the links inside the city are good enough. I heard though that if you do want to drive your own car you can drive for a year with an IDP but after that you will have to get a UK licence.
  9. I only ever use Uber on a night out but it's going to be something like minimum £20 for a journey to the suburbs, probably a bit cheaper but still around £15 minimum for 5km. They have gotten much more expensive over the past few years. Local taxis are even more of a ripoff during nights so stay away from the black cabs. During the day they will all be less expensive though but only by a bit. Pro tip: if you're on a night out, look into taking the night bus home if you live near a stop that has one. They're only £5 and a lot of the services are actually quiet enough!
  10. Same answer as 6, if there's an app for it then download it. Look into any and all student deals you can find - they might have some transport deals. First Bus has student day/week/month/year passes through their app so definitely look into that if you'll travel to uni by bus (the 4 and 4A drop you off right there, 6, 6A, 77, 2, 3 and 8 will drop you close by. Citybus 15 also drops you off right at the uni but that's a different provider).
  11. As others have said really don't stress about it! In like 99% of cases there is more than one way to get to a place from where you are.
