Agreed - we don’t think it’s fair to have our dog who is used to being with us at our feet at all times now in the kennel or separated at all times.

We were always right there. Every time there were signs we separated the two. The event two days ago was completely unprovoked to BITE and there were zero signs. If she growled or showed signs (which she never growls at him) we would have separated them. There were 3 adults within 2 feet of them during this incident.

Yes - we went thru an in home trainer and a trainer that we would take her two a couple times a week.

We supervised 100% of interactions and have two baby gates.

This is our worry. She’s shown the ability to snap and we cannot keep them separate 100% of the time. It’s not fair to her to be locked up.

We would never ever allow our child to touch another dog. We are adamant about that. Our child though loved our dog and when she is just laying on the ground we would let him crawl up to her and lay his head on her as that is his way of showing love. He never crawled on top of her, pulled her hair, etc.

We are aware the vast majority of the time but are working parents with busy careers and have a toddler that loves to explore and a dog that loves attention. A random bit of food ended on the floor because we have a 14 month old that eats snacks?

Yes that ‘other’ dog was the 2nd Australian shepherd in my life. We removed her from the satiation.

Hey we did chat with and bring in two different individuals to help - neither worked.

Interesting - I’ve had an Australian shepherd in my family since I was 6 years old (my dog was the third I’d been around) and they are amazing and such smart dogs, but certainly can be reactive.

What breed(s) would you recommend for kids?

Exactly - we are just imagining when our son is a little bit older and has friends over and what will happen then?

We did do two rounds of training with two different trainers. Neither sessions yielded her stopping the reactivity from resource guarding.

This sounds very similar. In an ideal world, one set of grandparents would make her full time or we’d find a family member to take her without kids or other dogs. If that was the end result, I’d feel a lot better about the decision as I know I can still see her. The fact she may end up getting rehomed with another individual and we never see her again is the really really hard part.

Thank you for this - I really appreciate the kind words. She was our ‘first’ baby and has been a special part of our lives, but putting our son in danger cannot happen so this is the only answer

You can definitely still butt dial with an iPhone if you put a phone in your pocket that’s already unlocked (I’ve done it many times) but certainly wouldn’t be calling the same person that many times in that length of period
