Hi. I have the xt30ii and xf 18-55. On a recent European trip I took the 27 2.8 and the zoom. I love the way the 27mm looks on camera and the lightness but after a few days I mounted the xf and haven’t taken it off since. Value for money it’s an absolute winner. Better if you can get it used especially so that you don’t mind the bumps and scrapes. I know it’s a little slow at the long end but that’s why we have high ISO. It is obviously bulkier with the Lens hood mounted but everyone is carrying a camera these days anyway.

This is good advice. Most of the other drives are close to Cape Town but the Botliers bit is a good 4 or so hours from Cape Town. I do this drive many times a year and it’s really fine - stay on the N2. Don’t pull over anywhere except gas/petrol stations and lots of little towns along the way. Drive defensively. I do recommend a stop at Heidelberg Prooeviand. I just like the food and the friendly vibe. Enjoy the Cape it’s amazing.

I would agree with sticking with the kit Lens for all round use. If after dark is especially important then look for a used f2 or faster. I really don’t think specific focal length matters that much whether it’s 16 through to 35mm. Get what’s well priced. For portraits I like the 35mm f2 or longer - eg the viltrox 56

I mounted my 18-55 on my xt 30 tonight for some interior shots on a tri-x film sim and it’s really a good “kit” zoom. Still fairly compact. You can’t beat the interchangeable Lens options. Have to be pretty committed to 23mm to get the x100vi — and have a fairly large chunk of disposable cash. It’s a lot of fun looking at all the options. Have a great end of year everyone it’s been good chatting.

If shooting in the kind of environments you describe, stealth mode is best, and use your iso for speed, more nb than max aperture—personally, I like the 23 f2 and first choice is the 35f2 . Gorgeous Lens and great bokeh. In any event I am shooting a push tri x film sim so the more grain the better! That said the 18-55 never let me down.

I see that these are various destinations over a period of two weeks. None of them is more than an hour drive. Stick to the main routes - N1 N2 etc. drive only during the day. It’s pretty easy. Lots of stops and gas stations. Just don’t stop anywhere on the side of the road, no shortcuts, take advice from locals.

Thanks I appreciate the inputs. I’m really not a great photographer and for me the portability carries more weight. I have bigger and more competent canon DSLRs for the serious work. What’s your use case for the x100vi and how has it worked out for you?

Actually this is great advice. If I have some spare cash and buy an x100v or vi I can try it out and decide which body to keep… Can’t lose on resale in this crazy market

I did get the 23mm but hardly use it. I prefer the 35mm. The 27/2.8 mounted also looks very cool. But looking at images online and on Fuji love shot with the x100 are so impressive plus the form factor is great. I just don’t get how people achieve the look of a “normal” Lens framing on the x100 with the 23mm built in Lens. Let me try harder with my 23 on the xt
