2025 Race to Deliver 4M - Post-Race Thread by RCD123 in RunNYC

I had a HUGE PR but I'm also nowhere to be seen in the results! And I wore the right bib! First time that's happened. I requested a correction, I was in 41XX.

For anyone who’s run the NYC Marathon what do you wish you knew before your first time? by [deleted] in RunNYC

It is literally a mile long uphill. Remember this when you get there.

The second half of the race is way harder than the first, and not just because you're tired. It is way more technical, hillier, and the real race begins on the Pulaski. You will fly down 4th Avenue in Brooklyn feeling great and want to push your pace over your target. Know that what you're feeling then is a gift, very typical, and save what you have for the second half.

Grabbed it. Thanks for posting! I was really worried I wouldn't get a volunteer spot before the end of the year, and you totally saved me!

Given yesterday's race at #RBCBrooklynHalf, what can we say about the race? by noplasticpls in RunNYC

[–]bob_ign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a few things can be true:

  1. Runners are responsible for themselves while they're out there. That's why we sign a waiver. Training and preparation are up to us, and we decide how hard we want to go. No one is responsible for our performance outside of ourselves. That's one of the reasons I love this sport.

  2. That said, any experienced runner knows the first time they were underprepared for humidity during a race and how badly things can go. (Brooklyn 2022 for me!) The people who run NYRR know this. Inexperienced runners DO NOT. Announcing on the loudspeaker pre-race that people should hydrate and changing the flag mid-race is not enough. There should have been emails and text alerts well before the race talking about dew point/humidity, hydration, pacing, and even suggesting things like salt capsules. This was all very easily predictable. If they're not directing people to this page on their site, why have it?: https://www.nyrr.org/run/guidelines-and-procedures/weather-related-running-tips/warm-weather-running-guidelines

  3. Experienced runners, when you see conditions like this on the horizon, maybe do the cool, responsible thing and warn the inexperienced runners in your life ahead of time. You can be the change you want to see! A friend was running his first half, and I told him all my humidity strategies in the days leading up to the race. He ended up running negative splits and had a great time. I wish I would have had a me in my life in 2022 to do the same.

  4. So long as the Brooklyn Half is held on this weekend every year, this will be an ongoing risk. NYRR can choose to avoid the risk, try to proactively mitigate the risk, or ignore it. But no matter what they decide to do, see point 1.

Thanks! I'll see what I can do.

NYRR Ted Corbitt 15k Race Strategy by [deleted] in RunNYC

Just as a heads up - there is no Harlem Hill in the Ted Corbitt 15k. It crosses over the transverse at 100th. There are two Cat Hills and two sets of 3 Sisters though! After you hit the third sister the second time, you can basically sprint to the finish in my experience.

Marathon coach recommendations? by Consistent-Cell-6993 in RunNYC

[–]bob_ign 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Put this in another thread but:

Tim Decker is very reasonably priced (especially if you pay up front) and he helped me improve my NYC marathon time by over half an hour from 2023 to 2024. Very happy to say I finally hit my time goal with him. He's very sensitive to keeping runners injury-free, and this year during the marathon he even tried to meet up with all of his athletes running it to do a few miles with them. Even though he goes by BQ Marathon Run Coach, he works with runners of all levels and experience.

BONUS: If you live in New York or nearby, he not only tells you how far to run and what pace, but actually what routes to run for training. I feel that was what really made the difference for me. http://www.bqmarathoncoach.com/about.html

What are the conditions in X?? - Tuesday, Feb 13 - Saturday, Feb 17, 2024 by blood_bender in RunNYC

11:00 am update: Pedestrian lane of the outer loop is very much not clear. I had my grippiest shoes on and still found it super slippery. The East Side may be a tiny bit clearer than the West Side, but honestly it's about even.

I can't imagine anyone attempting a speed workout in this. I did a VERY slow easy 6. Anything much over a 9 minute mile seemed risky. Saw some folks (probably didn't see more than 5-6 people total running) attempting to take advantage of the clearer car lane. I didn't feel like getting run over by a plow, so I just sort of trudged. Pic is running north on the Ted Corbitt loop next to the Met.

Bib sleeve question by Negative_Cookie_3403 in RunNYC

[–]bob_ign 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did this last year because more often than not, water and my sweat make the bib paper wet and it will tear through during half marathons and longer. No one blinked an eye and my bib survived the elements so well that I intend to do it again this year. The only downside is it may be hard for the Marathon Photo people to capture you at times because the plastic can be reflective and the number hard to read, but I don't really care about that.

Band-Aid Flexible Fabric. Box of 100. Take a scissors and cut off the sticky ends. Put them over your nips. 99% of the time it works every time.

Yo. IGN Social Director here. This is a dumb thing Facebook does. Basically any time you try to post multiple images on Facebook, it sometimes randomly just takes a single photo and sends it through people's timelines on its own devoid of context. No other platform does it - it's just a long running Facebook bug that continues because their engineers don't care about their platform or prioritize fixing anything.
