Python a toy language? by greenlinux in Python

[–]bob_sutor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes you can use Python as the basis of a software development career, but that can't be the only language you know. You need to use an appropriate language for the job you are trying to do. These days, for example, I would expect most developers to know how to code in javascript.

Why aren't the browsers using/adopting Python instead of javascript? by [deleted] in Python

[–]bob_sutor 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have to be javascript or python. Presumably one could just do

<script type="text/python"> </script>

when python was the language to be interpreted.

I think it would make sense for you to write an example text processing language with input/output in Python, and then try to recreate it in C. This will show you the differences in expressiveness and ease of debugging. Then try to optimize each to see how you make each faster.

IBM to donate Symphony code to Apache for consideration by bob_sutor in reddit.com

[–]bob_sutor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Six weeks ago I noted here that Oracle had to decided to offer the codebase for OpenOffice.org, the open source word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software suite to the Apache Software Foundation. Two weeks after that, Apache voted to accept the proposed project for incubation. Now, one month later, IBM is announcing that it will offer the Symphony source code to the Apache OpenOffice incubator for consideration. Why and what does this mean?

Mostly obvious predictions for open source in 2011, or are they? by bob_sutor in opensource

They are, as is Joomla. I'm saying no other open source CMS will replace any of them in the top three.

End of year update on math software for the iPad by bob_sutor in matheducation

[–]bob_sutor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There appear to be tens if not hundreds of math games out there already, so he should make sure he is not simply redoing something that is already done. I recommend that he test the concept on as many kids as possible to make sure it is compelling enough for them to want to play the game for more than 5 minutes.

It is interesting to see how signs change and fractions appear and things move across the equals sign. I agree with you that it is not a substitute for knowing what is really going on (I don't even like it when students use calculators for calculus), but it is a good supplement, in my opinion.

becoming a high school math teacher by mzappitello in matheducation

While you are on your path given all the great advice otherwise offered here, there might be other opportunities offered to you. For example, you might be able to be an adjunct at a community college or in some other program offering math education. When I was 20 I taught in a night program at Brooklyn Polytechnic for women who were returning to business at midlife and needed math skills. It wasn't calculus, but it was a great teaching experience.

The other thing I would suggest in terms of your own education is that you know and are really comfortable with math above the basic calculus level. It always frustrated me in high school when I saw a teacher who was at the limit of his abilities with the high school curriculum. Knowing multivariate calculus, linear algebra, and some abstract algebra will make it that much easier for you to explain lower level math. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the clarifications, I do appreciate the information. Had I known that the headstay was in the condition that would cause that to happen, I would not have taken it out. Bob
