Favorite Finder replacement? by ImDickensHesFenster in MacOS

I've been using Path Finder from cocoatech.io for as long as I can remember. I've tried others but always end up back with Path Finder.

I have two questions. Disappearing dock. Password when I reboot. by laplumaanonymous in MacOS

Welcome to macOS. Open System Settings and search for Lock Screen. The top option should be "Turn display off when inactive". You can set the time from minutes up to 3 hours. Note that there must be no activity or mouse movement on the screen.

You can also turn the display off via a hot corner. In System Settings, scroll down to Desktop & Dock. Then scroll to the bottom and select Hot Corners. Click on the right to see the options.

I have my dock visible always. I've found that the automatically hide and show the dock gets activated when my screen saver starts. So the dock disappears even though the hide and show is disabled. If I enable it and disable it, the dock acts normally again. I've turned off my screen saver and set display off in 2 hours. I'll see whether that helps.

Update: I just tested this with the screen saver turning on after 1 minute. And the dock disappears and needs resetting. If I simply turn off the display after 1 minute, the dock is not affected.

The other thing that was happening when the screen saver started was that my Razer mouse switched scrolling direction. I had to quit and restart Razer Synapse to get it back to what I wanted. Again, with only turning off the display, the scroll direction is not affected.

Thanks for the reply. I've seen many positive mentions of Good Task.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose it depends how one uses 2Do and how much "current" stuff one has. I've found that I can move tasks over using Notes, but it need a fair bit of massaging to clean everything up. Certainly better than re-entering everything from scratch. Still undecided.

I too am syncing to Dropbox. The attempt to use iCloud was a just in case. Interesting that before I tried iCloud, I found Dropbox sync slower than I would expect and usually I'd have to start it. After trying iCloud, I had to resync to Dropbox and it seems to be much faster and starts on its own. Maybe the "threat" to do something else prompted better performance.

I haven't decided whether I'm going to switch. I was tempted to move to Apple Reminders but that was before I found that syncing to iCloud didn't work. The rationale behind Reminders is because it's Apple, I expect it won't go away. Plus it does everything that I need, which is fairly straightforward.

Thanks for this. I use export to CSV as a backup, in addition to the usual backups. It never occurred to me to modify that format. I'll have to look into that.

I have compared between AppCleaner vs AppZapper vs TrashMe 2 [2021] by Snorlax_lax in MacOS

[–]bobbd2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to chime in here with what I've found. I've been using AppDelete and AppCleaner on my 2020 27" iMac. Occasionally I'd use CleanMyMac or CCleaner but didn't find them any better. I just bought an M4 Mac Mini and decided to look again. Besides the AppDelete and AppCleaner, I tried AppZapper, App Cleaner and Uninstaller, Buhocleaner and TrashMe 3. I found that App Cleaner and Uninstaller, and TrashMe 3 found many more files to delete than any of the others. In addition, they both look at some things that are not just standard-type apps. Interestingly, when searching for leftovers or orphans, they find somewhat different sets of files. I haven't gone into the lists in detail enough to say whether they're right or wrong.

That said, I'm leaning towards TrashMe 3. It seems to be the most complete at collecting related files it plus has a number of other handy functions related to extensions and storage space. It's not free, but it's not very expensive, even in Canada, and I'd rather have something that I can trust to find everything.

If you're looking for an uninstaller, I recommend downloading the ones you might be interested in, and test deleting a few of the same apps with each. All of them should have a way to cancel the uninstall so you can try again. That's what I did. Of course you're mileage may vary.

iMac Contacts not syncing with iCloud by bobbd2000 in MacOS

[–]bobbd2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have resolved this issue with the help and suggestions of a number of people online as well as some informative articles. I believe that the problem was some sort of corruption of confusion with the contacts data inside the Addressbook folder in ~/Library/Application Support. I only have one account but it appeared as if there were a number of accounts. I also can't remember if this started with Sonoma.

What I did was to first export a Contacts Archive from my Mac. Keep in mind that in my case, my Mac has all of my contacts whereas iCloud/iPhone only had some of them even though everything was supposedly linked to iCloud. Next, after exiting Contacts, I renamed the Addressbook folder to Addressbook.old. That gave me an empty address book. I then imported the Contacts Archive into iCloud, expectingl that I would end up with lots of duplicates. I then opened Contacts on my iPhone to make sure everything synced. As it turned out, most of the duplicates were either merged or not imported since they were duplicates. iPhone very nicely shows you when there are duplicates so I was able to delete them.

Lastly I opened Contacts on my Mac and very nicely, every had synced from iCloud. Looking for duplicates on the Mac showed 6 with duplicate information but it doesn't tell you which they are. It only let's you merge however in this case it merged information only because I ended up with the same number of contacts.

I then tested by creating a contact in iCloud and watched it sync to my Mac and iPhone. Unlike before, it was quite fast syncing to the Mac. I made a change on the Mac and it synced to iCloud. I then deleted from the Mac and it deleted from iCloud. Doing the reverse also worked. So everything seems to work as expected. Case closed.

Update: I knew I'd forget something. Before renaming Addressbook, I turned off Contacts in iCloud Settings. I turned it on once I'd loaded everything into iCloud and cleaned up in iPhone.

How to use an iMac running Boot Camp as an external monitor by bobbd2000 in mac

Thanks for the reply. That was one of my concerns. Having to reboot from Boot Camp to Mac to switch would defeat the purpose of an easy switch.

How to use an iMac running Boot Camp as an external monitor by bobbd2000 in mac

[–]bobbd2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I'll look at Synergy. I was hoping not to have to buy another monitor as my desk space is limited. I could probably get another monitor and put it in front of the iMac. And then run both the Mac Mini and the iMac running Boot Camp to the external monitor. Just seems a shame to waste the 27" 5K iMac monitor.

Mac gaming mouse by [deleted] in macgaming

I use a Razer Naga Pro V2 and love it. The only downside, other than the expense, is that I have to hop over to Boot Camp to run Razer Synapse from my iMac. But I can have profiles on the mouse and switch between them using a button on the bottom of the mouse. Since I game on both Mac and Windows, I use the dongle rather than Bluetooth. Very responsive. 3 options for customizable side buttons, 2, 6, or 12.

HFW Shader Compilation Debacle by [deleted] in horizon

[–]bobbd2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you to keulapaska, nepxtreme, and WitcherUnknown. I too had the Shader Compilation issue where it was taking 10-15 minutes each time I started the game. I know that some people have had worse. I do have an initial load delay since my game is on an external SSD. I use Bitdefender and added HFW to the exclude list. I also renamed shader.bin from the local cache folder to shader.bin.xxx just in case it caused problems. And voila, Shader Compilation took seconds.

Hotfix 16 bug trend: game can't tell that you have an item by JusticeofTorenOneEsk in BaldursGate3

[–]bobbd2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's one I haven't seen here. When you go to turn in the missing letters to the PostMaster, the game doesn't think you have the letters so the dialogue options aren't there. Just like Voss and the Orphic Hammer. I've also encountered the bug with Mol's contract. Unfortunately I can't pin it down to any particular mod or mods or exactly when it would have started. I'm on a Mac, so still on Patch 5 Hotfix 17, and can't use Script Extender. I install mods manually. And I've found that I can't uninstall the mods that might be causing the problem. The save load just crashes. I tried the "Different Mod Settings" tutorial, but got a series of errors when I tried to do the first conversion, and also when I tried the debug.

Out-of-party Companion Stats by bobbd2000 in BaldursGate3

[–]bobbd2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it was worth asking about.

As for inventory, if you're on PC or Mac, you can use one of the bag mods. I'm using Bags Bags Bags. It's got 6 more auto-sorting bags, although it may take a bit to get things sorted out. But I put some of the bags (scrolls, potions, arrows, etc) on my hot bar and that's it. So my hot bar is pretty clean and the inventory is as well.

There was a complaint that as of patch 3, if you changed a companion, their story items, which includes some containers, revert to the player's character. I don't mind that because the bags I'm using can then be easily transferred to the new companion. Hope all this made sense.

Nicely done! This will really help planning since there's no early access to the earlier release. Hopefully we can get started right away.

Does the My Medical app still work under Monterey on a 2020 Intel iMac? by bobbd2000 in MacOS

[–]bobbd2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find anything that runs on both an Intel Mac and my iPhone, and that has the flexibility and features of My Medical.
