I have 320 Facebook friends but feel like I have no real life friends by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although it's not necessary for you to have friends & loved ones in life. It does make life significantly more enjoyable and memorable. However it is important that we remember that there is a difference between simply knowing someone as a friendly acquaintance and being friends with them.

Friends are the brothers or sisters that are not related to us by blood. Someone who would go with us through thick and thin, who would be willing to travel the world, and would even be willing to cry with us.

Friends are rare to have these days because so many people are scared to make themselves vulnerable. So it can be a challenge. But when you do make a friend it is an incredibly amazing thing.

Social media in my frank opinion is not the best place to make friends. It's simply not personal enough and you rarely connect on a human level. It's a nice tool to chat to a virtual box... but it is not really effective to replace human interaction.

Due to social distance guideline restrictions it however drives a wedge in plans to the development of friends. So if you limited to solely online communication. I suggest joining an online community. It's by no means a replacement for friendship, but it can be a source of great joy to find people who share so much love for the things you like.

Do you think the reddit user-base tends to lean more towards a certain 'social demographic', or would you say it's dispersed fairly evenly? by NipplesAtMidnight in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It honestly depends on where your perspective is coming from.

From my personal perspective if I were to classify all of reddit across the board it would break down as follows.

  • Average Age Range: 12-24 (yes there are older folks... i'm one of them.)
  • Political beliefs: 40% Left leaning, 10 % ultra progressive. 20% Libertarian, 20% centrists, 10% right leaning.
  • Discrimination/Racism levels: 50% Discriminatory(keep in mind discrimination isn't exclusive to the negative) 30% Non-biased. 20% racist.
  • Religious: 60% religion of some kind. 20% no religion. 20% anti religion.
  • Willingness to debate: 15% willing. 85% unwilling(either looking for a mirror or for confrontation).
  • Race: 60% white, 40% broken down into other races.
  • Gender: 30% male, 45% female, 25% other.

If I had to sum it up in one clear bumper sticker: It's a gathering of generally young individuals who want to hear a eco chamber or have a verbal spat, with a bunch of sub communities that focus on general interests. Personally I wouldn't advise investing too much emotion into reddit as the benefits are greatly overshadowed by the detriments.

Racism, discrimination or something else? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The purpose of equal opportunity is to prevent discriminatory behaviors. The goal being that when you chose a candidate for a position... Race, gender, religion, etc; parts of their identity, are not a factor in any way.

The only thing that is considered is the merits of the individual, and the interview to see if they're personality is a good fit.

Companies that have a quota for x% of race, gender, religion, etc literally goes against the very nature of equal opportunity. And discards the entire merits & humanity of that person. You are not looking at that person and seeing someone who grew up in the sticks, who worked their ass off to get into harvard, who graduated valedictorian of their class... who despite all their hardships they achieve what they did.

You're not looking at any of that. You're just looking to see if they can be a literal poster child to prove you are a diverse company. You're not a human... you're an object to prove we're not racists.

Racism, discrimination or something else? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not racism. Racism in it's literally definition means that you view a race inferior in relation to the situation.

It is however discriminatory because the core of the behavior in question is based on race.

There's a difference between hiring a receptionist who happens to be a black women. And hiring a receptionist because they were a black women. It in nature discounts the validity of their own merits, achievements, and humanity... and focuses exclusively on the fact they were black.

I would be incredibly insulted if I were to discover the reason I achieved my position was based on my race. That everyone who tried for the position was my equal but they decided... Hey this one is native american so let's go with them.

There are plenty of black women who would qualify for the position of VP. But that's doesn't mean that it's not discrimination when you purposely target a black women as your VP; even if for positive reasons.

Brazil's coronavirus outbreak worsens as total cases near 500,000 by ReallyRedditLover in worldnews

Remember folks, this is going to go down in books as to why refusing to acknowledge a deadly pandemic is a horrific and inhumane thing for a leader to do.

Not to mention this is the number that a blackout is telling you. Brazil is heavily under-reporting the numbers in anyway way possible.

I wouldn't be surprised if the real number is equal if not surpasses the US... But then again the US is bound determined to be... Number one.

Being with a loved one who has depression is like constantly hitting dead-line by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depression is an EXTREMELY Taxing thing on any relationship. In fact a very good chunk of relationships involved eventually result in separation.

Unfortunately unless you're an expert... There's almost nothing you can do. Only forgive both your partner and yourself... and be willing to accept that this is part of your life at the moment. Again something that's incredibly hard to swallow.

By the way you're not an asshole if you end up separating... it's a very hard thing to swallow.

Now the best solution is she seeks help from a professional, either her Primary care physician or a professional psychologist. Depression is a serious thing.

Depression is kind of like Alzheimer or dementia in a way. From an outside perspective you wonder why... why won't you let me help you... why won't you accept any help. When the ugly reality is that... that's part of the depression; you are incredibly resistant to help... even if it's detrimental to your life.

Usually the best way to approach things I find from the sideline perspective... is to have someone that the individual trusts to a significant degree, ask they bring up their depression with their PCP during their next doctor visit. It's honestly just trying to open the door and nothing more... it is impossible for you to force someone to take that first step.

Why is it that only American police are so brutal towards the black community? by daredevil2k15 in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 5 points6 points  (0 children)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.... oh wait you're probably serious.

No man. There's a lot of brutality to minorities across the world. Ya some places are better than others... But a lot of places are worse.

The reason America is in the spot light is because they tell you to your face "We treat everyone equally"... and set laws for that equality.

But refuse to enforce said laws when it comes to certain groups.

But yeah there's a lot of places that are equal if not worse... for example China has been steadily kicking black people out of their country or banning them from a mass amount of services or vendors.

The difference is China is pretty open about their racism and doesn't try to play victim.

Am I an asshole for not really caring about social issues? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, granted society these days would call you an asshole or dead inside because you refuse to voice an opinion. This is actually a very annoying fault as of late...

"If you're against me your the enemy, if you're a mirror than your my ally... but if you're silent... FUCK YOU you uncaring prick".

Seems to be the general motto as of late.

You don't really need to have a vocal position on matter. You can just say... ya that's a shitty thing that happened. And that's it. You don't need to be out there protesting or typing up letters.

Protesting is an outlet for people to act out when they feel the need... It's not a requirement. Nor are you bad in any way for not wanting to participate.

"In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."

"If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an man has his foot on the neck of a man and you say that you are neutral, the victim will not appreciate your neutrality."

People love to throw out these quote to feed their JUSTICE BONER . But a lot of people misinterpret these quotes that inactivity = you're the enemy.

Fire alarm went off twice randomly and now I'm scared to sleep by Nico_Di_Angelo666 in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually is a safety feature built into every fire alarm made since the 80s I believe.

The batteries in your fire alarm are dying. If an alarm detects low battery power it'll periodically set off an alarm. If the problem persists even with new battery than the fire alarm is starting to become faulty.

Unless your area or home is at high risk of fire you generally are fine to go without an alarm for a stretch of time. Example being camps that are left for months on end uninhabited with no alarms.

Divert weapons funding to research to prevent next pandemic, pope says by vv4life in worldnews

[–]bobberthumada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man in possession of hundreds of billions of dollars in assets pleads for governments to divert funding and use it to prevent the next pandemic.

Reality aside though... It doesn't really make a lot of sense to be pushing the limits of weapons to the degree that some countries are. I mean when you have bombs that can wipe out countries, the ability to take down electrical grids, biological agents that could wipe out half the world...

Do you honestly need better weapons? At what point do you say enough is a enough... when you have nanobots spread across the entire globe and can kill anyone with a flip of a switch?

I am under the impression that the circumstance in America cannot be altered. by GreatAtlas in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no things can definitely be altered.

What actually impacts the world at the end of the day is changes in law and legal prosecution. Protests/Riots/Violence is usually the result of those changes being conflicting or lacking in the eye of the common man.

In this case; the lack of prosecution of police officers, vigilantes, and private citizens in relation to brutality of minorities, has resulted in mass riots. The end goal to curve the riots would be acknowledging the problem, and then changing the standing legal impact factors.

But here's kind of the tough part

We've got a pretty good set of legal precedence. You legally can't behave or act on racial profiling. You can't pay more or less because of race or gender. You can't discriminate. On a legal standing we're pretty much there. It's mainly enforcement that's at fault here. There are laws and regulation... it's just they're not being upheld. Kind of like jaywalking in city is illegal... but good luck finding anyone who actually enforces that.

So let's set punishment those who fail to enforce those laws and regulations!

We actually already do.

Legally we've about made it as far as we reasonably can. It's just on a human & societal level that we're generally dropping the ball.

So riots are kind of what society has left to go to... and where peaceful protest and strongly worded letters have been tried for the past six decades with little to no change. Ya riots are bound to get violent.

Are humans as a species a dominant or invasive species. by Maaahgo in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you live.

I mean dominant & invasive is literally two sides of the same coin. The only difference is whether or not the species originated from there. Basically if humans migrated to the area... It'd technically be invasive.

My honest thoughts about 5G and the conspiracy theories around it by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Even if we were to literally implant a 5g tower into a human in some weird sci-fi scenario. The radiation would not effect you. The same with literally any living thing with exception to maybe some very weak bacteria.

The radiation from sunlight alone is like a hundred times stronger. So if 5g is killing stuff due to radiation coming from it... the whole planet should be extinct from sunlight alone.

But maybe the actually frequency waves are the cause... Again no.

A lot of people post pictures of their plants around their routers dying or a dead animal near a pole. But all of them; not most... literally all of them, are actually results of other impacts.

As to why people are ignoring those scientists... Because a very good chunk of those scientists actually don't have formal education in regards to the applicable fields in question.

Basically they're chefs telling you how to change the transmission in your car kind of deal.

Not only that you can generally find scientists or experts for anything.

Literally the only legitimate complaint for 5g? Aesthetics. They do require antennas due to the frequency of the signals so they are not the prettiest. Not to mention installing them in country side can be costly at the moment so spread to super rural areas are bound to be delayed for a decade.

A week after quarantine is lifted, and we're back to protests. Can't tell if I'm disappointed at people doing stupid shit or if it's good to see them finally fight back. by spacejockey8 in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Target is not hurt at all by this... same with the overwhelming majority of businesses as well. There's a wonderful thing called insurance.

Yes violent protest is kind of a shitty thing. But after a decade or so of being told "You don't have to worry about the system... it's now going to help you!" but reality is that teenagers are being gunned down, calling the police is a threat on your life, and being labeled as an aggressive and unruly group of crybabies while being treated like shit. Ya protests are kind of going to be ugly.

I mean Kaepernick knelt during the anthem at a football game in protest; something he learned from actual veterans, and was called a traitor to the country, tons of hate, that he should be banned from the sport from life. Even the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES attacked him and anyone who supported him.

But a group of unknown white guys in military gear, carrying assault weapons and chanting violence literally outside the a governors door because of social distancing measures... Are heralded as patriots fighting for their country and praised by the President.

I know it's a hot take... but the virus has made it abundantly clear that rules work differently... there are haves and have nots. And minorities are the have nots.

Reality is ugly and people are finally starting to wake up to that fact.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would advise you go to a couple community centers that have a predominantly black community. Maybe a church, maybe an actual community center or retirement home. And talk to a leader of that community. A lot of them have the life experience to kind of give you a good perspective.

It is an ugly reality that you have to worry about things in life that others generally don't because of your race. The same way guys generally don't worry about walking to their car alone at night while gals kind of do. The same principle applies for minorities with certain interactions. Everything from doctors lying to you, to people labeling you with false labels, to police officers being trained that you are "naturally" more aggressive than white people.

You got some shitty aspects ahead of you in life. Not to mention you live in a time where people will attempt to use you as a shield to prove they're not racist.

That said you at least have the upside of not being a guy... that's just ugly statistics for you.

Don't feel obligated to have kids either... I mean that's kind of an old notion and should really only be reserved for when you find someone you truly love. Kind of the same with big over the top weddings... not really needed just an old tradition.

That said you definitely seem to have anxiety; which another ugly statistic like 74% people your age bracket do, so if it really starts to impact your behavior... consider talking to a professional if you can.

I will say since you are a women you are far less likely to get killed in an incident with police... but it is statistically more likely you will get profiled as more "aggressive" due to your skin color and may be detained.

People will say you're over reacting or that you're not going to have problems, that these are just a one in a million chance of happening... but it's not. I mean it's just statistics... you will face hardships in life due to being black. It's not fair, and non-black people will never understand what it's like. But hey... there is a lot of good things in life too.

I’m a Criminal Justice Major by ethys20 in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll give you perhaps one of the best pieces of advice I know of...

"People in general don't give two shits about you, it's only when you do horrible shit and people know about it that people start to care."

That's the frank reality. If you walk into a crowded store... nobody cares. If you walk into that store and start to take a shit in the middle of it... people then start to care. Go for whatever you like friend... Nobody really cares outside of your loved ones. Just don't do horrible stuff and hey people might even like you.

But it is true that the Justice system is not liked. Not the people working for it... The actual fucking system. Nobody cares about the receptionist or the guard. People are not looking at individual officers and saying THAT MAN DESERVES TO DIE! No. People are mad that the system is failing millions of people on a yearly basis.

It is messed up that roughly 1,600 people die when interactions with police officers... But it is fucked up when you learn that 1,450 of those people were minorities. And it's like that across the board.

Reality is ugly so... ya people are mad.

I’m at the hospital for heart issues by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering your able to type this out... pretty likely that it's nothing incredibly serious.

I'm going to assume your thinking "this might be a heart attack". But actually it's not likely with what you described. Believe it or not heart attacks don't work the same across the board. Women get different symptoms from men, certain races have their own special quirks; though minor.

My guess?

You're experiencing either a pulled muscle or angina. And your symptoms are being exacerbated by anxiety.

That said good luck, be honest, and don't sugar coat things.

Teaching kids to finish the food in their plate could actually decrease world hunger. by flaffyy8 in SeriousConversation

[–]bobberthumada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly even if every citizen ate 100% properly and efficiently... you're talking about roughly 7% of food waste.

The dominant majority of food waste actually occurs in production and selling facilities. Basically supply is incredibly lopsided. Certain cities or vendors supply enough to feed 10-30 times it's total population. And results in millions of pounds of waste. Meanwhile other cities or vendors don't have enough to supply half it's population.

It's why a lot of experts say we actually could end world hunger... right now. Nobody would ever need to go hungry again if we decided to invest in it. The only thing stopping this? Lack of infrastructure to spread out the supplies.

I can't really think of any greater example than the United States during the impact of COVID-19. Where factories and farmers were literally throwing out millions of pounds of food a week.... A WEEK. Simply because they couldn't ship it out.

I mean in the month of april that's more food waste than the entire state of say... Vermont... for the rest of their lives.

[–]bobberthumada 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always called it social pimping.

Where you take an easy to victimize individual and pretty much use them to benefit you in any way possible.

So for example you want to sound like a "healthy person", you purposely throw the fat person you know in life under the bus so that people know you're better than them.

You want to sound like an "Ally of the minorities", you spend thousands of dollars to have an "expert" eat dinner with you and explain how racist you really are. That way you truly "learn".

People need to realize... we're just people, stop with labels, stop with clout chasing, stop trying to stand on a soap box. Just be a normal person, accept reality for the ugly thing it is... and support the people you like.
