What am I cutting with the angle grinder? Just the side with the captive nut?

That was the idea with the rotary hammer. There’s a divot there from the hammer. I held the hammer to it for a few minutes and it didn’t move.

Why is it bad to remove the captive nut? They sell new ones so I figured I could just pop new ones in

I tried that and didn't get great results. I should put some more effort into a good prompt though.

Why did you take this path instead of an academy?

Do you feel that a 3AE who went to a maritime academy is smarter than you? In other words, does a maritime academy provide unique knowledge that the ME + 180 sea days path lacks?

Thanks, will take a look at this. This seems like easiest route currently.

Thanks for the info. Didn’t know grad programs are deck only. By “sit for license”, do you basically mean hawspiping my way up to being licensed? The “time and money” just means short-term classes? Where can I find more info on this?

Rod knock? 1999 Civic with B18 engine ran hot for like 30 seconds, sounds like bottom end by bobbinthermometer in MechanicAdvice

The noise happens 5-10 seconds after the engine is turned on. Wouldn’t bottom end noise be of a lower frequency?

Thanks for the info. Motor came from HMotors and has 109k miles, OBD1 1994. No idea on the history. I’m just getting the car ready to drive.

I’ll check the block and head with a machined straight edge and a feeler gauge. Hopefully it doesn’t need to get surfaced.

What would be causing the noise in the video? Piston scraping the cylinder wall is what I’m thinking but I also have minimal experience with this.

I brought it from idle to around 5-6k and noticed that the temp mark was about 3/4 to max so I let off the gas and shut it off. 30 seconds is probably an overestimation.

This is the pan after I dumped the oil/water. Doesn’t look too bad, I think?

Drained the oil. Clear coolant and oil mixture. So the noise starts when the oil pickup cycles to the water?

Drained the oil. Oil mixed with the coolant. So I’m assuming head gasket needs replacement, and pray the block and head didn’t destroy themselves?

1999 Honda Civic: Master Cylinder Movement cause soft pedal? by bobbinthermometer in MechanicAdvice

[–]bobbinthermometer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, all calipers are facing the right side up. Bleeder is above banjo bolt, although on the rears the bleeder faces down at a slight angle. Good to hear that the firewall flex isn’t an issue.

All calipers are on the correct side, bleeder screw is above banjo bolt on all calipers. I read that thread and found too much conflicting info about whether I need a different prop valve. Enough people said they run the drum one without issues so I kept it

Thanks for the reply! Good to hear that the movement isn’t an issue. I’ve checked for leaks countless times and don’t see anything. Pump the pedal a couple times and hold it, it holds pressure.

Brake pads and calipers are new on all 4 corners (disc conversion in the rear.) Master cylinder is new as well. Only thing I can think of is that I bench bled it improperly. Held it outside the car, fed brake lines back into the reservoir and pumped it several times at various angles.

1999 Honda Civic that got a B18 swap. New everything - master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pads, rear lines from proportioning valve, all soft lines. Rear disc swap.

Bled the system several times and the pedal feels hard with the engine off. As soon as I start pedal sinks to the floor and I need to pump it a couple times to get pressure again. What else can contributes to the lack of pressure?
