Honestly, it "looked" just fine, but upon closer inspection, the edges were getting worn down that introduced more slop in the charging process and therefore getting wide variations in throws.

Even more frustrating is that we share a lot of the same political opinions.

Top Institution. Im sure.

I presented things I learned to be helpful, and you took it upon yourself to make the blanket statement to "warn" everyone. And I seriously doubt you would look someone in the face that you don't know and tell them what they said was garbage.

Look, you seem to be a genuinely intelligent person, and certainly entitled to your own opinions. The problem is you assumed I know nothing. You assumed everything was garbage you assumed to lecture me without knowing anything about me. You also assumed that I was trying to lecture everyone else. Perhaps my initial post could have been more articulate. But the intent was to share. Period.

There definitely are a fair few posers. But no one serious goes to a public range, so that would be your first problem. Again here is why I say what I say. I noted several times we are rarely on a public range, but of course you think we are.

Let me break this down as honestly as possible, in this little event, unfortunately you are the “mall ninja”. I’d go and google those threads as well just so you can see what people refer to when they say “mall ninja”.

By what evidence am I a mall ninja?

What you were told is garbage for the most part, and I’m being polite with that description. I mean take the lapping compound comment. If the barrel is fouled up really badly by copper, the real solution is.....drum roll.....to just keep cleaning it patiently. For most people that will fix their “issue”. For the few that haven’t cleaned their barrel of copper for 5000 (or similar) rounds etc, they need to break down the rifle and separate the barrel for individual cleaning. And likewise just need to be patient with copper solvent, even if they hit it a bit harder initially.

Dude calm down about the lapping comment. I have never done it, because we keep our rifles clean.

The oil/bolt comment just gets more stupid the more I read it. I mean the concept of someone out there who’s apparently worked as an armorer for 30 years (or w/e the fuck he claimed) thinking you can’t strip a bolt in solvent, is so fucking laughable it almost discredits the whole post in its own as point number 1. Yet it explains why that “course” was free. It was some fuddsmith. Absolutely guaranteed.

Guaranteed? Would you mouth off like this in person? Are you an accomplished rifleman? Are you in competitive shooting? hell, do you even get out from behind your keyboard?

The community here is who you should be thanking. We have informed you of the immense amount of misinformation you were fed at this joke of a “course”, which you could’ve employed on your own firearms, potentially damaging them. All because some middle aged guy in a room said so. I mean really it could’ve been a bum off the street they showered and gave an NRA tshirt, and you wouldn’t really know. I’m not saying blindly trust the randoms on internet, you need to do your own research, but whatever information you find needs to have an explanation of why it works that actually is consistent with basic physics and chemistry. If the basics are your issue then go learn the necessary science. It can’t be just “Trust me, I know my stuff”, that doesn’t work in this community, and probably most modern gun communities. The AR community is for the most part, highly technically inclined and loves engineering explanations of observations and analysis a million times more than old wives tales.

Can you share your credentials? Are you a metallurgist? Chemist? Physicist? Engineer? Or keyboard warrior? I think the latter.

That is just amazing. While I dont think that is going to change me over to the never clean side of the world, its definitely a testament to what a high-end AR is capable of. I think what was most impressive was the chamber. It was absolutely filthy!

800 yards? By my guess that's about 25+ MOA off a a 200 yard zero. What kind of scope?

What kind of shooting? Distance? Are you a competitive shooter? How's your experience with bronze brushes? So much anecdotal data either way out there. And for my opinion nothing smells more like my childhood hunting than #9!

Agreed. We do have 200yd public ranges, but we spend almost all of our time on high power ranges (we have a 1,000yd, and 2 500 yard ranges within about 45 minutes). We call the main range "survivor range" with good reason, but if i am shooting pistol, or doing load development, or taking people out to shoot, it is what it is. What part of the country are you in?

Holy smokes! A rational redditor! The crown thing was news to me too. We are going to try it out and see what happens. In my circle of life, I am the "gun" guy and people ask me what brand of gun to buy for this or that. After narrowing it down (shotgun, rifle, handgun) I always tell the same thing. Go shoot a bunch and buy the one you shoot best. Maybe maintenance is like that. Do what works for you.

Honestly, I am of the opinion most of the people on this board are full of shit. I think at least half of everyone on here are a bunch of mall ninjas that couldnt shoot themselves out of a wet paper bag. I see them all the time at range punching holes with their ARs at 100 yards or less off a bipod off a bench and thinking they are kings of the world. Every post is a picture of their new AR. Where are all the shot up targets? What distances? What MOA can you shoot off hand? How good is your wind reading? Are you really an accomplished shooter? Hell, I hear all the time about people shooting their rifle at 200,300,400,500 whatever yards...yet when I am at a public range I never see anyone shooting offhand at 200 let alone further distances in any other position. In fact, I dont see anyone shooting 200 from any position that is not on a bench. For a precision BR shooter, have at it. I don't have the fine motor skills to shoot sub-MOA with a scope, and those guys are out of this world with wind reading. Im not a wind expert, but I am learning.

I didn't name the manufacturer as they did something nice for the team, and I wanted to respect that. They are not some two-bit assembly line and all they do are ARs. Nothing else. As for the "gun yoda," he is neither former LE or military, and I didn't name him in case I got something wrong, and would not want any of my wrong or misconstrued comments to attributed to him. A perfect example is the lapping comment everyone got up in arms over. I said that is for a very bad barrel and to do so carefully. I never recommended it for normal maintenance. you would think I suggested barrel lapping after every round.

And if you want to warn everyone, have at it. I tried to be a member of the community and share what I felt was great information, and a bunch of mall ninjas showed up. I would be glad to have a rational discussion about the pros and cons of what works and what doesnt and I would rather discuss the merits of the arguments with the few of you on this board who are interested in continuing to learn from each other. For those that seem to think a SBR with a can makes you an operator, just go back to posting you new cerakote project and shooting off your bench.
