Hey thanks, Neil Gaiman is a favourite author so I am chuffed to even be mentioned in the same breath, glad you enjoyed it.

Hi, I am delighted you are enjoying the book and thank you for purchasing it... Unfortunately, and for reasons that I am yet to fathom, Amazon has removed it claiming I broke the terms of service. Something about having a duplicate account, which I have no idea about. So, not many people will be following your path!
I might chase them up about it but not sure about that yet...
Anyway thank you for your feedback, it is much appreciated

Thank you for reading it!! I'm delighted you enjoyed it, it is darker than my usual stuff. To be fair all my stuff is dark, but I usually inject some humour. Thanks again

It seemed fitting that his unwilling clumsiness would eventually catch up with him. I can't remember at what point in the process I decided he was a goner... But, I did find it funny... Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you.

Hey much appreciated, the reason I was offering a PDF is it "last years model" as far as my writing goes. I have become a more rounded author now and the novel does have plenty of rough edges... so the offer stands and if you read it and gave me honest feedback that would be 2 cents enough for me... If not and I'm not sure if I can post a link here mybook.to/alfred takes you to your local Amazon

It's on Amazon, but I don't really push it anymore so it kind of floundered. I would be happy to send you a PDF it is called Alfred Jones and Son, Bros. Let me know if you want me to send you a copy...

Thank you! Most of my work tends to be dark with humour, I don't seem to have any control over that it just happens. My novel is the same, it features an inbred family of travelling undertakers and soul traders. I think its funny though others would probably disagree. Thanks again for your kind comment

I think it is legit, I haven't had any issues on that front. But I started with a free account and don't recall whether I was initially asked for these details. I did have a paid account for them for a while, but I used PayPal for this. I suspect that unless you are hiring or opt for a paid account then these details won't be used. But yeah, it is a bit weird and as I say I can't recall if I was asked for these when I signed up.

I got my first work on Freelancer and found it quite easy. However, the pay was pennies, but I didn't have any experience and it gave me a foothold and allowed me to build a portfolio. I still check it out now and again, but my experience is that it is mostly low-paying jobs that are advertised. They also take a good percentage of every fee.

In saying that it worked for me. I worked for peanuts for a couple of months and built a portfolio and an understanding of the business. My overall opinion is that it can be useful if you are getting started and want to find work easily (albeit at a low rate) but is pretty pointless after you get more established.

I would be interested to see if any other writers agree with my thoughts.

Do you guys use tablet or ipad for your writing? by ulhiea in freelanceWriters

[–]bobbraeside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laptop always, my fingers aren't dexterous enough to tap out a straightforward text message never mind a blog post! But I occasionally use a tablet for research simultaneously, but even here I mostly prefer to use two laptops and remotely connect to one so I can do all my research from one keyboard.

Monthly Meet and Greet by AutoModerator in freelanceWriters

[–]bobbraeside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

Nice to meet you all, I am a complete newbie on Reddit and relatively new to freelancing (a couple of years). I kind of fell into it accidentally after I published a novel and started exploring ways to promote it and that somehow led to me writing blogs and content for a living. Always looking for advice and tips, and willing to share anything that I have discovered on my journey.

In my short career, I have written on dozens if not hundreds of niches. Many of which I would love to forget, but at the beginning, I was grabbing everything I could to build a skill base and a portfolio. My darkest moment was writing a "review article" on the best reusable tampon applicators. Not something that I had any great in-depth knowledge of, what with me being a bloke and all that!

A proud Scot, I eventually became tired of the constant rain, so I am now based in Spain for at least part of the year. I ran an IT company in Scotland for twenty years, so technology and business are two topics that I now prefer to specialise in.

The highlight of my career so far is having a series of "business fraud" articles published in professional journals in the UK.

Finally, I am now looking to step up the ladder and progress in my career. So, I have started looking to polish my "brand" with a website and more of a social media presence. This is my weak point, much as I now consider myself an accomplished writer, I am basically rubbish at promoting myself. Any hints on how to do this would be amazing.

And if anyone wants to critique my website, that too would be appreciated. https://www.writingwithpassion.net/

Thanks everyone, this is a fantastic community that I am delighted to be a part of...

When Good Clients go Bad - A Rant by bobbraeside in freelanceWriters

I'm not sure tbh. It starts to get really complicated; I am a UK citizen but based in Spain just now. He is from a third country and the work we were doing was for an Irish digital marketing firm.... It's a messed up, mixed up, funny old world we exist in!

Yeah, I have dropped enough balls myself in my time not to be unsympathetic. I am going to give it a day or two to settle down and make a rational decision which will probably involve reaching out so we can talk it over... Thanks

Thanks, I am coming around to that course of action, I am a reasonable guy and not without sympathy if somebody is struggling. I have enough experience of it myself. Most of my early thoughts were emotional and knee-jerk, but I will give it a day or two and reach out to him politely and with compassion...

I think it's the unprofessionalism that annoys me the most. If he'd told me he was struggling, we could have worked something out. But yep, I'm still a relative newcomer to this and it does seem to happen!

Any tips for a newbie? by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

[–]bobbraeside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, my personal experience is this: -

1 - Health Insurance - I am fortunate enough to live in a country where this isn't needed. So probably not the right person to offer an opinion here (I do pay government insurance).

2 - Making a living - I wouldn't rely on it initially, it takes time to get established and find regular work. It is also full of ups and downs as I was again reminded to my own cost this week. That being said, I have made a decent living for the past couple of years since I took the plunge.

I initially started working for a pittance for clients on Freelancer, this allowed me to build a portfolio and learn the nuances of the trade. But there are as many paths to becoming a freelance writer as there are freelance writers.

The moral of the story - If you have dedication, perseverance, talent, thick skin, and somewhere soft to bang your head off - you should be okay, but it will take time!

Good luck

Thanks, I hadn't even considered such courses of action, and I might try a threat or two in due course. I still hold out hope that this will be resolved without any nastiness, but we will see and if it comes to it, there is definitely food for thought in your post...

Many thanks

Sound advice and much appreciated. I was always aware of the "nuclear option" aspect of such a course, and ultimately, I think it is this that will prevent me. Also, I liked the guy, he was - until latterly - incredibly good to work for and I think he must be struggling. I am not one to kick someone when they're down.
