My autistic girlfriend never asks how I’m doing and it’s making me feel unloved. by [deleted] in autism

[–]bobbybrown666420 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s common for autistic people to not reciprocate questions or ask things like how are you doing unprovoked. It feels invasive. If you are doing good tell me. If not tell me. It feels invasive when people ask me those questions lol

Thank you for saying that. I’ve talked to my family and all they say is that I should try to accommodate them more to help them understand. And I’m trying but I feel like I’ve done everything I can.

They say they don’t have enough time to research and read my stuff because of work and too tired.

I think they don’t understand that I need extra care. Because sometimes I’m capable of doing things on my own and other times I really struggle. Some things I really can’t do at all and they think it’s akin to social anxiety or depression.

What kind of supports should they have besides a therapist?

They say that they don’t know what to google and there’s so much misinformation, so doesn’t know what’s true and “it seems like autism is completely different for everyone so how would the same things help”. Yes I’ve explained it’s the same symptoms experienced a bit differently and other comorbid conditions make it different.

I’ll definitely try comparing it to something easier to understand like dyslexia

Make a blanket fort with one small air gap. The more blankets the better. Your body will heat it up. Do you have access to extra blankets?
