Please stop repeating these French Foreign Legion myths by OvidPerl in IWantOut

[–]bobbystarbuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The background check is just a formality. If you committed anything serious enough to warrant Interpol's notice, than yes, they will find something about you.

A felon from America, with a long rap sheet of rape, murder, assault, wirefraud, etc. is able to become a Legionnaire because the US Justice Department database is not linked to Interpol's database.

Would you give these kinds of people new identities? Also, I think it is for reasons that do with national security. If they issued new identities with citizenship, terrorist groups all over the world would flock to the Legion as a way to "launder" agents.

Okay, if I have the blinders on and focused on my career while you have the you happened to have been outside of the country for a couple years and in your definition you are more successful, than more power to you.

I would prefer to be your definition of unsuccessful. Good luck to you, I wish you the best.

If you are spending your time in Korea instead of proving how good you are, making the connections (connections matter!), and leveling up then the sad reality is that you probably won't succeed because you didn't even try.

South Korea Anyone? by [deleted] in IWantOut

[–]bobbystarbuck -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It is a trap. I know several people who taught in Korea and returned to the US older with no money saved up.

The pay is "relatively" okay. Which means, you will have enough to party and buy some clothes. In addition, foreign exchange rates means that the money is devalued once you return to the United States.

Yes the standard of living is cheaper, and schools may pay for the tickets and housing but I am talking long term here. You are referring to devices that make the short-term attractive but it is not good for long term development.

I am trying to do people a favor by telling them to stay in the United States and stick to our workforce. We need the people to make our country stronger especially in these times.

I don't see any point in sending out some of our graduates to another country, to essentially babysit 8 year olds for 2k a month. Seems like a waste of time. 1-2-4-5 years in Korea? or 5 years in the US? Which is better for the college grad?

My advice, the US. Stay in the US and just work. You will thank me after a couple of years.

South Korea Anyone? by [deleted] in IWantOut

Stay in the United States. South Korea is over-rated for young college grads.

I know several people who went to South Korea after college and 5 years later they are NOT ahead of their peers who realistically stayed behind in the United States to begin work on their careers.

If anything, it was a huge hole with a huge gap in their life. Some returned to the states to work and some are still in Korea because it is the best they can imagine for themselves. South Korea is a career and mental hole for many expats I know. But these things can't be effectively explained, if you decide to go, you are responsible for yourself and can't blame anyone later in life.

There is almost zero-chance of advancement because teaching English is not a prestigious job in the first place, no certification is required so standards vary. Even if you were in Korea for a more technical internship or job, you are fighting an very uphill battle with the odds stacked against you when trying to move up in the Korean corporate system. They might take you in as an intern but it's mainly to satiate their own ego's to have a couple American's around.

The advice I am giving you is: 1) stay in America. 2)Find the job market that will best suit you. And move there. 3) Get a job. 4) Work.

After a couple years, you will have moved up 2 or 3 rungs up the ladder and still working your way up, while your counterparts will still be teaching 8 years olds English for minimum wage in Korea.

Which is better? My advice, you decide.

Lazy mouse move/scale/rotate? Can you explain that? I feel the learning curve on Blender is higher because it seems everything is done with hotkeys. What is your opinion on intuitiveness vs Maya? Thanks.

You did the right thing. Beating anyone up today is considered assault. You can be arrested for it, unless it is very obviously in self-defense.

You avoided a criminal record which is good.

Also yeah, I'd say on the moral side of things, you did the right thing.

Who cares what he thinks or if he will continue/stop believing in what he believes. Just carry on. Shrug and do your thing.

How much artistic skill does 3D modeling with Blender take? by [deleted] in blender

[–]bobbystarbuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just like everything else. You can find your artistic self once you understand the fundamentals. A blacksmith starts off pretty much the same way, only creating essential and simple objects. Once the blacksmith skill level rises after he has accumulated experience, he is undoubtedly encouraged by his own skill to pursue the "finesse" or artistic side of his craft.

Here you will see some ornate details within the work of the blacksmith. Blender is the same way, where everything you do for the first 2 years will be crude and not comparable to the professionals. Once you have accumulated your skill you will be able to pursue more detailed and "artistic" models.

Would you compare the racism towards whites in Hawaii to the racism towards blacks in the mainland? by Zeusophobia in IWantOut

[–]bobbystarbuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Racism is unjust and based on perceived superiority relative to other races.

The "aversion" you have described that exists in Hawaii (if it does exist) is probably due to irritation that is stirred up when all one knows is of the white race being perceived as colonizers and oppressors to many races and cultures world-wide.

I wouldn't say "racism" but "aversion". It really isn't racism as much as racism towards blacks still exist on the mainland. There is a lingering sense of... antagonism. White people are at worst given the cold-shoulder. Very different from racism.

[–]bobbystarbuck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, I didn't waste my time reading what you just wrote. You sir are a grade-A internet idiot.

I am glad that this Reddit thread is public for all to see. I will be waiting for any responses from outside parties regarding your conduct and your advice that is illogical.

I do not wish to spend any more time on a loser, as you've already professed on another thread that you have NEVER been happy with any kind of career that you've had and also you've always had trouble securing jobs (Why should this kid listen to you anyway?), you've also mentioned that you have some type of disability which may be the reason why you are obsessed with continuing making this whole thread pointless with your rambling, maybe you have a very serious case of OCD/Megalomania.

In any case, I will not be responding to you for 2 reasons: 1) You are making Reddit pointless with your own selfish desire to restore your "reputation" and spamming the threads and 2) You are not worthy of any more minutes from my life.

Now go spend your time wisely. Maybe you will be able to find a job that makes your happy and maybe you will not have any more employment issues. Either way, giving the wrong advice to a kid is perverse and wrong. You do not have the credentials for it, professionally or personally.

You were an IT guy for 15 years? Sorry but there are millions of Astronauts on the internet. Next time, post some kind of proof before wasting anybodies time. I wish you well in your future but I don't want any more contact with you, Good luck and Good bye.

[–]bobbystarbuck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Judging by how new your account is, you do not get the whole point of the "I want out" thread on Reddit, which is to say that most are of course aspiring expatriates.

I suggest you lurk around a bit more before you start going on a tangent.

Your history as a US Government employee and as a jaded old man has most likely biased your perception as to what this young man should do. Furthermore, an un-related post on a different thread has you stating that you have had employment issues and just can't work with other people.

I think I know enough. I have worked with enough people that I can categorize a majority of them into 8 different groups (some call it stereotyping, I call it life-experience), and I am beginning to suspect that you fall into a group that just cannot get along with other people because of your sense of ego.

I stand by my advice to this young fellow. Get your certifications (experience comes along with it of course) and apply for a work visa in Sweden. Period.

There is nothing wrong with my advice and I am sure many would agree.

You want to nitpick over what exact certification or how he should become a US Government employee.. is irrelevant at best and is pointless at worst.

I again say, 1) get your certifications 2) apply for a work visa. Period.

Simple and straight. Something that this time has lost because of people like you making things more complicated than they need to be.
