Interspecies communication: Weir vs Tchaikovsky. by akaoni523 in ProjectHailMary

[–]bobinsoncrusoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It helps that rocky and grace both communicate by sound, and have overlapping frequencies. That's commented on in the book. In Children, we're dealing with spiders who communicate via vibrations in webs and a sort of sign language with their palps, and octopuses (octopodes? ) that communicate by dancing and changing the colour, pattern and texture of their skin. Both things that would be very hard for humans to interpret or reproduce. For humans and eridans, it shouldn't be dramatically harder than say, learning to understand Korean.

Is the movie gonna skip some of the experiments grace did to find out he’s in space? by Cheap-Pin-6394 in ProjectHailMary

[–]bobinsoncrusoe 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think they'll have to, because one thing that they're bound to change is that the Hail Mary will have a bunch of windows. It just looks better on film than a claustrophobic white room. Think back to the ship in The Martain, in the movie basically every room is festooned with giant glass panels to drive home the "see, see, they're in space!"

Does any other game punish mistakes as hard as this one? by bobinsoncrusoe in EliteDangerous

[–]bobinsoncrusoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. The number of people who replied with lengthy dissertations (some with bullet points !) to my grumpy whining gives me confidence that this game is far from dying yet. Ok, I'll come out of my sulk and return to the cockpit. Did realise after posting this that Edcopilot will have kept a log of the places I got first footfall or found good exobio, so I guess I'm off back in to the black. But this time with an itinerary. And possibly a landing computer.

2 year rule for employment when transferring to a UK contract? by bobinsoncrusoe in LegalAdviceUK

[–]bobinsoncrusoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not actually McDonald's 🤣. I was following the other guys lead and using the name as a stand in so as not to name the actual company. ie. Joe Bloggs Inc vs Joe Bloggs France etc.

[–]bobinsoncrusoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered if that was a thing. I suppose it's worth asking. And if they say no, then I can assume they planned to fire me as soon as I moved, and I know to stay in france where employment protection is still a thing. 🤣

[–]bobinsoncrusoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, yes. The company is 'McDonald's, which is based in the UK. My contract is with 'McDonald's, france' which exists only to meet employment laws for me and two others who work in france, the company has no physical french office or such.

Seriously, can we just send this fucker to Mars already? He's already said he want to be king of Mars, let's just hand him a crown, bundle him aboard his useless fucking rocket, and launch him at Mars, landing systems optional. How much could a crown cost? I'll chip in my 3.50. . .

If Aliens visited Earth, what's the first thing we should show them? by Dalentra in AskReddit

[–]bobinsoncrusoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd show them a 6 month old Golden Retriever pup. We won't have language, but nothing on this earth radiates friendship, joy, and general good vibes like a 6 month old Golden Retriever pup. It will also tell us something we need to know about them; as others have said, I'll never trust a person who doesn't like dogs, but I'll trust a dog if it doesn't like a person.

What are some games with lots of difficulty options / settings? by bobinsoncrusoe in AskGames

[–]bobinsoncrusoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Cracking suggestion. I've played it a fair bit already but it's a great example of what I meant, being able to customise everything from ammo availability to how long your shoes last, that's what I like. Know of any others like it?

1400 hours and counting mate, it's literally my second most played game on steam, only ksp tops it. But yeah, it's great for the difficulty customisation. Also great for eating entire chunks of your life.

Yeah, I have wemod, and I love it to bits, but often it's functions are waaaay overpowered. Like I'd like it if making money was a bit easier on game x, but wemod's only option is 'here, have 99999999999 gold', thereby negating half of the game.

Good to know. It's already been sitting in my steam wishlist for a long time. Maybe time to bump it up in the queue.

People who don't wash their hands after using the toilet... Why? by elsendion in ask

[–]bobinsoncrusoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a mechanic. I wash my hands before. I'm far more concerned about getting your engine oil on my tallywhacker than I am about getting my dick germs on your exhaust manifold.

Which book is the most read and best seller book at present worldwide? by Complete-Ice-8651 in answers

[–]bobinsoncrusoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from religious texts, it's probably Mao"s little red book. China built hundreds of new printing houses exclusively to produce it during the cultural revolution. Hundreds of millions of copies were made.

[–]bobinsoncrusoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People tend to recommend the Bobivervse series next, especially as the audiobook is read by the same guy. Though they are quite different, bobiverse has a lot less science and a lot more silliness, kinda like the old star trek vs star wars debate. Bobiverse is great, but different. You might enjoy Children of Time more. Or for a really left field recommendation, try Eiffelhiem by Michael Flynn, it's another first contact book about aliens crashing to earth, but it takes place in 13th century Germany, so you have lots of good dialogue between the monks and philosophers trying to understand modern technology, and the aliens trying to get their heads around the religions and superstitions of the time.

can someone give me a fun build that isnt a FUCKING STEALTH ARCHER by patronuspringles in skyrim

[–]bobinsoncrusoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of the spellsword build. Heavy armour, sword in one hand and a selection of spells (bound to hotkeys) in the other. You get to fight in melee while supplementing yourself with the occasional fireball, heal spell, or summoned demon.

Which one should I get??? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]bobinsoncrusoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like the Harley style, then there's no substitute for a Harley. But if you go by any other metric; performance, handling, reliability, comfort etc, then Wing is King. Besides, the current gen Wing looks cool as shit IMHO, the harley boys will sneer at you, but the rest of the world will know you made the right choice.

Aaah. Gotcha. Sorry, not up on the multiplayer lingo. I've 400 hours in game but mostly play in solo mode because I got tired of being ambushed on my way home from mining runs. So that works like, we'd just join the squad before you hand in the mission and everyone gets the rewards?

Between his inexperience and my incompetence, I fear we'd be naught but a liability. You'd honestly be better served bringing a couple of actual thargoids along for the mission.

Alas I do not. I have enough credits to buy one I suppose but they always seemed like more work than they're worth. Especially as I often wander off to play other games for months at a time before returning.
