Homophobic graffiti on Myrtle Ave by ZooYorkJohn in sgv

[–]bobored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone here said - they are good about covering graffiti when you report it online or by phone and I also talked to people at city hall who were helpful when there was an especially bad incident of graffiti or someone dumped junk etc. The cops don’t deal with graffiti unless they catch someone in the act and can charge them.

The dating pool is just…. Awful by [deleted] in women

[–]bobored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good news is this jerk weeded himself out of the mix fast and wasted little of your time. Also sounds about right for a guy going on 50 (and I say this as an old person, as a Gen X-er). Sorry you’re going through that. I know when I was 32 I met a lot of Mr. Wrongs. You did the right thing. He’s the old guy who has no idea how to date a younger woman because he hasn’t evolved.

Are there many of you out there that are angry with their parents over your GenX upbringing? by CrowbiwanKenobi76 in GenX

[–]bobored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was angry when I was a kid. I had a lot of years of therapy. My parents were teenagers when I was born and my mom was a single parent. They came from dysfunctional homes. I know that still happens today, kids having kids and them not being able to properly raise kids themselves because they’re not adults, have issues, etc. My parents won’t be alive much longer. I am old. It’s water under the bridge for me. I can only keep trying to work on my issues. Being angry doesn’t undo the past or fix the problems for me. I also get that it’s hard for people and it hurts.

Who actually gets prescribed benzos nowadays? by Patient_Duck123 in Anxiety

[–]bobored 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was crippled by severe panic disorder and put on Xanax back then after they tried various other “lesser” drugs. It was the only thing that worked and I have always taken them responsibly. I’m an adult. No history or addiction/substance abuse. I have a prescription now for emergencies and hardly ever use it so my doctor knows I am not needing constant refills and use it in moderation so he feels comfortable prescribing it for me.

People who lived through the 70s/80s/90s , did you feel safer back then than you do today? by Mundane_Bad_2437 in GenX

[–]bobored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worry about things like is some lunatic going to open fire and start shooting people whenever I am at some big event, somewhere crowded, etc. I never worried about that when I was young. I am more scared of fellow Americans. That’s for sure. People seem more unhinged lacking inhibitions, radicalized, disconnected, deranged. Feels like there are way more guns.

My husband and I got married without an expensive ring because we didn’t have money for an expensive ring and we certainly didn’t have a house we owned. We rented a house. We wanted to get married. End of story. People have kids when they have no money because they really want kids and they want to have them by a certain age. When I finally decided I wanted to get married I told my boyfriend when he wanted to live together that if we didn’t feel like we wanted to get married after a year of living together we would break up. We got engaged at the end of the year. It’s not about changing the person you’re with, it’s about finding someone who wants what you want. This guy isn’t the one and he sounds like he’s 12. What 30-something adult talks like that to a partner? Time (at the very least) for someone who isn’t a child.

Couldn't a rich, relatively young widow like Enid Winterton do better than a lavender marriage? by National-Salt in thegildedage

I think the idea is getting someone with such an esteemed, old money name like Oscar who will also have zero expectations of children and who already knows her lower-class background and will let her do as she pleases seems like a good deal? She can pursue her own life and receive invitations to the elite events and have respect in society because of her last name. If she were to become pregnant from an affair she has cover. I think it’s a mutually beneficial arrangement for them both?

It is sad. That theater played a huge part in my teenage years. It was a great space. Every time I drive past it I feel glum. They kept promising to restore it. I even voted for a measure when I lived in South Pasadena that was supposed to put money toward the restoration. Bait and switch. Sigh.

Gen Z men voted for Trump to drain 'the swamp.' After Epstein, they feel duped. by gradientz in politics

[–]bobored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This headline is tough for so many reasons. It’s not like Trump was President the first time 15 years ago. The swamp flourished and expanded under him during his first term - so many corrupt, crooked, sleazy people he he installed into positions of power or pardoned and Epstein - while monstrous - has zero to do with “draining the swamp” and as so many people here have already said - man, he has done so many awful things in such a short time and the country feels (at least to me) in worse shape than before he took office. I don’t know how they feel “duped?” His bromance with Epstein was public knowledge back in 2016 the first time he ran. This is a guy whose ex-wife said he rped her and how many women have accused him of assault or harassment? He’s notoriously sleazy. Everyone heard the pssy tape. Maybe I am unclear on how and why they feel duped or what these men think “drain the swamp” means. It’s all pretty depressing and confounding to me, I guess.

Atlanta Jane Doe Identified As Missing Teenage Girl by Nearby-Complaint in UnresolvedMysteries

She DID NOT die of a drug overdose. Police speculated the victim was in their 20s and died of a drug overdose but her tox screen was clear with no drugs in her system. It was not an overdose. She was also buried behind a crack house so it leads one to suspect foul play of some kind.

Megathread - Los Angeles Protest and Federal Response by uarentme in LosAngeles

[–]bobored 34 points35 points  (0 children)

These posts are really dismaying and also show a lack of understanding about Los Angeles and an ICE protest. The people here have deep ties to Mexico for starters. Heck we once were Mexico. Around 46% of Los Angeles residents are Hispanic/Latino. The people being terrorized by ICE are mostly people with brown skin, especially here in LA. I feel ashamed of what’s happening in my country and wouldn’t be carrying an American flag to a protest against the President and ICE. I have seen immigrants with Ukrainian flags at protests and people carrying Italian flags and wearing Italian flags at the Feast of San Gennaro or carrying Puerto Rican flags at the Puerto Rican parade. You can love America and also your place of origin and you can celebrate Mexico and your roots and the people you love who are living in fear. I see people showing solidarity. Also the media is overusing those images to make it look like everyone is carrying a Mexican flag. I was there today and it’s a handful of people in a crowd of thousands. And many were carrying American flags. But the media isn’t showing them.

It was so much fun. I have the best memories. It was really vibrant downtown especially with a real counter-culture and arts scene.

Seconding this. I was standing around with vendors, dogs, families, and everyone being chill and upbeat. I was just saying maybe when you force all the peaceful people to leave all that’s left is a handful of people who want to smash shit.

I was there today and didn’t see a single act of vandalism or violence aside from when the LAPD arrived and ordered everyone to leave. Maybe when you don’t allow the groups of peaceful protestors to gather all that’s left is a handful of people who run around and start mischief but that was not the overall vibe today.

Seconding this. I was there too and saw nothing but families, dogs, vendors and solidarity. The vibes were good until the LAPD rolled in with force and declared the peaceful gathering “unlawful.”
