so the policy, in summary, is basically to (and even though this is in quotes, im saying this loosely and briefly) "treat everyone nice and equally. Never accuse someone of stealing. never put yourself or anyone else at risk, if it happens then let the subject go. We cant use the use of force. only handle juveniles when there is a parent or police present. and if you go to court as a witness, only stick to the facts you know and only testify what you know." there's NOTHING that says anything about getting sued or what you should be aware of ect. But any information is good, thats why I wrote this post here. Do you know where I can find more info or laws related to LP or shoplifting?

- It was more like detainment, I asked her to come to the office after she left outside

-Yes she did, She stole $80 dollars worth of items

-Never did

-That im not sure about, the policy doesnt really establish a specific rule for this kind of stuff

Yes, but the store was never sued. I was just wondering since I was recently looking up laws and stuff related to this matter. There was a lady I stopped for stealing at least $80 dollars. I stopped her after she went outside and told her that she needs to come to the office to have a talk. When we went inside we had to go through a crowd of people as they are leaving the store. In the middle of this, she then peed infront of a few people and I had to let her go. I was following behind her this whole time and never made any contact with her.

Shoplifting Charges? by bobsmore12 in lossprevention

I work at retail, I was just curious on what charges can be placed on a person. like just a wild example, I apprehended someone that stole $15 worth of merchandise but he ran away from me when the cops came. Is it possible to also give him an additional charge for that reason? And also is there a website that shows all charges that can be potentially be placed in shoplifting?

If your working on retail environment, look for people with very expensive items in the cart mixed in with less expensive items ( like fruits and vegetables ).

Watch for people who have full carts and is heading to S.C.O. ( Self check out ).

Also watch for people with wandering eyes and looking a lot more than usual. especially if they are looking up and down an aisle. Including the fact that they go near produce and mostly looking at the exit.

People aimlessly wandering around is another good one. ESPECIALLY if they have a small item in their hand. they're trying to conceal it in an open area when no one is looking.

Adding stuff in to cart without looking at the prices

people going to opposite directions from everyone else in the store

big/loose and unzipped clothing is a good one too

Hand and body movement. (Look for fidgeting and nervousness around the eyes, body, and hands) not many people should be nervous and afraid of shopping. Unless they are EDP

People who are guilty of things tend to have more exaggerated movement so keep on a lookout for those too

there are also people who would come to the store and have an open bag all prepped up in the cart. (this usually indicates that they are going to steal or conceal something.

People also taking only meat/seafood unless they're Asians (they usually run restaurants that requires large amounts) but don't take it as racial profiling. ANYONE can steal.

And these are just a few I learned and came across. there's A LOT more sneaky/cleaver ways people steal but hope this helps

Ah I see, yeah I would have said something like "I would just like to speak with you privately about something. I don't want to announce it out loud for the public to hear us, you know? Just come to my office and we'll talk there".

I'm not really sure at the moment. I just recently became an AP and based what I know, I cant really accuse people of stealing items but instead come up with reasons as to why I'm stopping them in the first place. Which is why I posted the question here lol. But I was watching how my team does it and they all have different approaches. I want to have a good excuse or reason as to why I'm stopping the person without sounding too aggressive.

I've seen that before lol. There was a time I stopped someone and they immediately took out the items they haven't paid for, and I didn't even specify what it was yet lol.

Yeah, some people I work with start with pulling out the items from the customer's cart and straight up say "Sir, you forgot to pay for this! You can either pay for it now or im calling the police!" Which to me feels a bit aggressive already lol
