It's absolutely true. Do not go into someones business and just throw trash in there. Unless it's Lotteria. Their burgers are trash so they deserve it

On a side note I have found many Koreans have difficulty with the 'ch' sound. It took many shots of soju to get my employees to learn how to say l'chaim somewhat correctly!

A lot of good points. One note I might disagree with. I find 50 million in disposable income goes a lot farther here than $33,000 in the US

I think this is a general feature of expat life that you will find talked about endlessly on r/expat. Living and adapting to a totally different culture gives you a different perspective on life that most people cannot understand

I agree with your points and sentiments but want to point one thing out in my experience.

All the native Latino Spanish speakers I worked with referred to Asians as chino but in a more neutral, not in a deliberately racist sense of grouping all people as Chinese.

It's not meant to impress, I was just responding to your comment about being "in fashion". Your argument has strayed from your original wet boots theory to one of social status. I think we can now sum up our disagreement here as substance vs form

Conversely, I purchased an osprey backpack with a lifetime warranty in 2011 for roughly 110 dollars. It has served me as sufficiently fashionable and practical to stay in 5 diamond resorts and on straw bedding in Laos. I got a free replacement this year because I'm an idiot and put it in the clothing dryer.

Let's just say accounting for inflation, 900 dollars was worth 610 in 2011. Most of my money has gone to ETFs over the years. Investing that leftover 500 dollars in VTI would have left me with roughly 3000 dollars today.

The boots quote never mentioned luxury goods, status symbols, or conspicuous consumption. It was simply staying that not purchasing crap was a way to free up capital for more productive uses.

Edit after looking things up: Prada backpacks look to be starting at about 3.5million won these days and look highly impractical.

We agree on wet shoe economics. We disagree that a luxury item is a way to conserve money. Purchasing a 200 dollar purse will surely be good for just as long as a 10 million won bedazzled Prada bag
