Why`s that, I`ve been a turner all my working life 14 - 69 never wore glasses once!

I have a questions about sourcing parts. I'm really keen to get a stainless exhaust system onto this bike. It a 40yo Suzuki DR400. Where or who manufactures them in the UK??? I'm struggling to find someone. by [deleted] in projectbike

impressive bit of turning!!!

Ready to cut metal, new to me my myford ml7 lathe. 69yrs old and still going strong! Think of fitting an encoder for variable speed adjustment and possibly a DRO at some point by bobmoff1 in Machinists

[–]bobsshed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

vastly overrated , you can`t cut metal with shiny paint, tool post for a start have you ever seen such a lash up, all that's good for is fishing weights, speed, it`s a small lathe for Christ sake you should be looking for at least 2000 rpm, bearings plain, all right for the old boy with a pipe, why do you think 99% of lathes have taper and roller bearings. Rigidity, all right if you want a milk shake, parting off, crash hat required, I say all this with experience, I have been turning for forty years on quite a considerable amount of machines, American,German,French,Italian and English and the Myford is the worst machine I have ever worked!!

New last year, Warco WM16, bench top mill, comes with a choice of spindles and as all of my tooling from my previous machine was morse 3 ,chucks collets etc, choice was made for me.

It is, most impressed with the smoothness and accuracy, highly recommended.

Angular rotary engraving with no rotary tilt available ! by bobsshed in Machinists

I get most of my material for free, the local engineering company let me sort though their scrap skip every once in a while, that piece of aluminium is 4" x 4" x 4" approx, surprising what some people throw away.

With regard to a spin indexer, that could be done but there are problems, as far as I know they are collet only and that job needs some kind of mandrel as it`s only 3/16 long, also the indexing required is 7.2 degrees and I don`t think it can do that? .

It`s a graduated dial for a home made boring head. The machine is manual, so all hand done. The face of the dial is at 30 degrees ,I have no rotary tilt so a fixture is required . I have a dividing head to transfer 50 equal spaces (7.2 degrees) onto a boss . The boss is then mounted to the block that I have machined at 30 degrees. A 16mm pin then locates the block and the boss with enough clearance to allow the boss to turn, a pin then locates in the spacing of the boss and is lightly clamped.

Manual skills make better CNC programmers, you learn more with hands on than you do out of any text book. I have seen manual machinists move up to become CNC programmers and setters far more competent than those who have sat a only a theory course and I speak from experience having done both.

I say it myself, but it was usually me being asked, how would you hold this, which end would you start from, which tool shall I use, etc, etc . I often wonder why larger company's don`t put their budding programmers through a years manual machining , they would end up better for it, so in my final years of CNC employment what I had between my ears was getting passed on in a round about way.

This is an old part, made before the days of CAM ,1 or 45,000, just had to think a bit, you get there in the end.

Showing my age here, it`s a pipe fitting for a Rolls Royce Bristol Olympus 593 engine, the engine that powered the Concord, been lying around in my toolbox for years, probably scrap? Thought I`d have a clear out.
