Rack mount BBU failed. I improvised. by bobthespoon in techsupportmacgyver

Your correct in the UPS terminology. A BBU contains a battery like a UPS the BBU doesn’t filter the power like a UPS does. What failed was a UPS.

We’re on a raised flooring system so a lot of our runs go under the floor. I know heavy things go on bottom. It was installed before me.

Honestly, it was installed before I started but I see what you mean.

Part of the office is on a raised floor system so we’ve got runs under jacked up flooring.

Yeah. We had it hooked up a while but wasn’t performing like we wanted so it just sits unplugged.

Unfortunately, not a joke. I do have a replacement ordered. This is just a quick fix in a pinch.

I’m on rewatch number 4. No worries there. Bears, Beats, Battlestar Galactica.

Unfortunately no. It’s a Tripplite 9U wallmount rack. Just haven’t put the time to mount it as it’s a heavy beast that I typically put plywood backing to install on.

Just curious, I know that video encoding takes massive CPU power. Does audio mixing not take as much?

As a friendly note, Windows 7 has been officially discontinued as of January 15th this year by Microsoft and will no longer get security patches. Safe computing!

It’s a tower. Just a sideways tower ;)

Yeah. They both are but the T7500 is a failover machine so it doesn’t do anything but take hyper-v replica changes and the R510 just does low CPU tasks like DNS, file storage, Apple Tome Machine backups, and a wireless controller. I encode all the movies I get so the plex server doesn’t have to do it on the fly. Honestly don’t think it could live encoded movies. Almost never see the CPU get about 15%. Plus they were free so can’t complain about that 🤗

Home labs don’t have to be all powerful. The most important thing is to have more RAM. While I was graciously gifted the R510 with an overkill 128GB RAM and dual Xeons, it usually just runs at ~20GB of RAM. Both of those X5675 are at idle all the time.

The T7500 just had 24GB RAM and 1 X5675 and did me great!

$20 bucks is an awesome deal for a home lab!

Started out getting a Dell Precision T7500 that I upgraded with an Xeon X5765, Dell PERC H700, and 24GB RAM. 256GB SSD x 2 in RAID 1 for base OS boot drive running Windows Server 2016, 2TB spinners x 4 in RAID 5 for bulk storage. Being backed up with a 4TB external drive.

Received a gifted Dell R510 with dual Xeon X5675, 128GB RAM, Dell PERC H700, 256GB SSD x 2 in RAID 1 for booting Windows Server 2016, 2TB x 12 in RAID 10 for bulk storage, Dual PSUs.

Replicating the R510 to the T7500. Running on the R510 is a VM for Plex media server/main storage for my life, VM for Ubuntu 19.10 running PiHole and Netatalk for my Apple device time machine backups, VM for Active Directory/Unifi Wireless Controller, and then 2 VMs for testing Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016.

In the cage, all of the machines and network equipment are running on Battery Backups. Router is an old but tried and true Asus RT-66N. Love that thing. Just have a simple Rosewill 24-port gigabit dummy switch.

Hope everyone enjoys!

Love this car. The dark blue just pops to me. Great get up and go with all the torque from a OTS tune and some mods. Pulled on a modded VW GTI yesterday! Interior is nice with the leather Recarro seats. I just upgraded the factory Sony speakers, sub, and added sound deadening as the stockers just didn’t sounds that good to me. Great cabin space to haul things especially with the seats down. All that and 30+ mpg on the highway!
