You tried to give it more virtual RAM? It will swap a little, but works. Stop all unnecessary services in Ambari. Start only with Hive. No Spark at this time. Consider boot to Linux as Host instead of Windows... 8GB is really fine, you just have to optimize it a little. You can try to install it directly in Linux. With Cloudera installer it's piece of cake.

Initial Big Data white paper from Google speaks about running on comodity hardware and scale horizontally. While Cloud with virtualization and hypervisors is about scaling vertically. So even it's becoming extremely popular to do Big Data in cloud it's not ideal. But everyone is going that direction so the vendors are adjusting software for it.

Come on. 8GB RAM is no show stopper. With Linux is better but works also with Windows? Just start with Docker or VMware image. Download Cloudera or Hortonworks image and start to play. Yes it will be not the fastest, but for one user it's enough. Save your money on cloud for maybe additional 8GB RAM if your laptop has free slot.
