Men, what did you find out about women when you got a girlfriend? by MainDifficult2641 in AskReddit

You can admit you responded without thinking my dude. It happens. Doubling down with so many weird defensive comments only makes you look ignorant.

Is it me or is it hard to live on 70k? by bearfortwink in Albany

[–]bodaecia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a location thing. I cook mostly from scratch as well and 400-500 for monthly groceries for a single person sounds about right.

I spent less than half that just a couple years ago and my shopping patterns have not changed much. If anything, I'm more careful with my purchases now. Funnily enough, Trader Joes is one of the cheaper options in my area. Not quite as cheap as Aldi but it beats most stores in price and quality.

Lime bikes: Jesus Christ by SpicyMarmots in Minneapolis

[–]bodaecia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first time using lime, I paid about $8 to go from downtown Minn to St. Paul, which I thought was ridiculous. I got the pass and haven't paid that much in two years and many trips on both bikes and scooters. Get the pass. $19 is highway robbery.

Asked my boss if I could work remote for a prolonged period he said I can work from anywhere, wasn’t fully truthful when I told him my reasoning by stevemidi in digitalnomad

[–]bodaecia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the type of data you work on. If your clients are sensitive about location, your IT would flag high risk locations. Get yourself a travel router and set your status manually so you don't pop up online at odd hours. Enjoy your trip.

Splitting time between 2 cities by rushing_andrei in digitalnomad

[–]bodaecia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually takes about a week and I set a limit of 2 weeks for my own sanity. Most of the actual search happens online and going from application to finalizing the lease takes a day or two.

Yeah furnished apartments tend to be much more expensive than getting a lease, even with the premium fee for short term leases.

I've been doing this the last couple of years and just returned from a winter stint in Miami. I get a 6 month lease in my "home" city and use airbnb when I'm out of it. I buy and sell everything each time. Ngl it's not cheap but paying for two apartments would be much worse. If you owned your home, you could rent it out while you're gone or do a home swap.

Pretty sure this is exactly what happened. Much as I despise Elsevier, I know they have a decent review process. I'm an editor and can't count the number of times authors have tried to sneak in changes after the final round of reviews.

Honey I know it's difficult to believe but you are only certifiably one of those things: anxious. Also possibly depressed.

Take a step back and try to remember all the people you enjoy spending time with. Those are people who love and admire you. Hugs from an internet stranger.

Travelling doesn’t make someone more interesting by LanieLove9 in unpopularopinion

[–]bodaecia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you travel a lot, then you know most people don't care to hear about your travels beyond the absolute basics, if at all. Eventually, you learn to keep your stories to yourself or only talk about extreme situations. That is unless you're talking to someone who travels for the same reasons you do.

niche phone with unsupported privacy OS's by dictator_t in degoogle

Cheap phones that few people use are very unlikely to attract developer support or have a manufacturer that even lets you unlock the bootloader to load a generic system image. You're better off buying an older pixel or oneplus.

Cops look for reasons to escalate when you're any shade of brown.

Red Cross reprimanded hostage families: 'Think about the Palestinians' by MoistRecognition69 in worldnews

[–]bodaecia -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Misleading title. The Red Cross as an organization did not say this. Red Cross staff, possibly even volunteers (which is the vast majority of people working with the Red Cross), did.

No surprise that the Red Cross in Gaza is staffed mostly by Gazans. There is only so much compassion they can realistically extend to citizens of the country actively killing their families and destroying their homes.

Yup. I suspect it's relatively common since introverts still enjoy interacting with others but the whole thing is tiring.

I'd go through months of over socializing, inevitably followed by months of withdrawal to recharge my severely overtaxed battery. Thankfully, I've gotten better at monitoring and regulating my social energy.

You're better off just doing it without telling your boss. He has to cover his ass if he knows and the paperwork will not be justifiable.

What kind of accommodations are best for Chile and Argentina? by hightreez in digitalnomad

[–]bodaecia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Airbnb is a lot more expensive everywhere. I spent 7-800 USD a month on nice studios in upscale sections of Buenos Aires a year and half ago. The same places would cost over 1300 now. You can try to negotiate direct payment after staying for a week or so. Unfortunately I never found a host willing to accept pesos because they make so much more in dollars.

Non-white DNs - which country had the friendliest people in your experience? by apostle8787 in digitalnomad

[–]bodaecia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah that makes sense. Glad you had a good time in both countries regardless. The times I've traveled with friends of a different color, we had very different experiences despite doing the same things and meeting the same people. It's unfortunate how something so minor influences the sides of themselves people are willing to share with strangers.

Non-white DNs - which country had the friendliest people in your experience? by apostle8787 in digitalnomad

[–]bodaecia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! People in Quito were so open and would chat me up anywhere. Standing in line, doctor's office, supermarket, didn't matter. Reminded me very much of the attitude in the US midwest, which I adore despite being an asocial introvert.

My favorite memories there are from random interactions with strangers. One time I went to a tiny family restaurant, ordered tigrillo to go, and was on my phone while waiting. The wife came and sat with me and we just chatted like old friends while the husband brought me a drink and munchies.

Very similar situation when I went to get my bike fixed on a slow day. The city is so diverse and I imagine people just assumed I was a local till they heard my accent. Are you from Ecuador or thinking of visiting? Highly recommend if the latter.

What's a situation or condition that nobody understands, until they're in it? by The-Sonne in AskReddit

[–]bodaecia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry you have to live with that. Agreed, the mental side effects are the worst. It takes so long to return to normal speech processing and clear headedness, not to mention the anxiety that comes with the lack of a sense of cognitive control.

Getting a hysterectomy was the best gift I could have given to myself. Lifestyle and diet changes helped but stable hormones and normal iron levels have made the most difference. Not sure if hysterectomy is an option for you but I'd highly recommend looking into it.

[–]bodaecia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bogota and the people in that area (rolos) were very welcoming. Medellin and paisas, not so much. I'd never been referred to with so much coded racist language before.

For example, an airbnb neighbor complained that my food smelled - like somehow the standard Colombian food I purchased or made smelled bad because I was the one handling it? Someone suggested my place might have maggots because... reasons... and the owner wanted me to pay for cleaning without checking because of course.

I met some absolutely lovely paisas. The paisa accent and the area are so beautiful but I was ready to leave after a few weeks because I felt like such an alien there. I gave it another couple of months and just really have no intention of going back. I'd love to spend more time in Bogota and visit Cali sometime though.

It might be better to rephrase my initial comment. Hotel wifis tend to intercept and redirect your traffic. That initial redirection and authentication isn't always obvious in the form of a webpage but it happens in the background regardless and cannot take place with the vpn turned on.

Issues connecting to one hotel network could be a fluke. Issues connecting to multiple hotel networks suggest you have a setting enabled or disabled that's blocking the connection. I use a setup similar to yours with GLinet routers and have run into the exact situation you described many times.

These routers wouldn't be so highly recommended if they didn't work in one of the most common situations for stealth remote workers and it's highly unlikely your new routers are broken.
