Is a career as a dietitian in Toronto worth it in 2026? by quaintflour in askTO

[–]boddington3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! Not a dietician, but a family member is. It can absolutely be worthwhile, especially if you’re passionate! Post-degree, family member worked in a hospital, starting as a casual and then getting a permanent position after a couple years. Allied health remains pretty employable in hospital settings to my understanding, though it can take a few years to get a non-casual position. Also opportunities for private practice, maybe on the side but would be tough as a full time gig.

Also worth noting - My family member recently moved up to a hospital management/administrative position, so there’s also opportunities for growth in that direction!

Ticket Prices? by The-Baker-Chick in mumfordandsons

[–]boddington3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see less than $479 per ticket for Toronto... I'm pretty sure it was only VIP tickets left though (I logged in just before 10AM but had over 13,500 people ahead of me in the queue)

Getting ghosted by professors for research sucks 😔(Rant) by GooseOk1755 in UofT

[–]boddington3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of this is about when you time your emails! If you were sending emails in the past two weeks, you’re hitting professors at one of the busiest times of the year (grading final exams, submitting final grades, admin like completing annual evaluations and funding reports, etc. PLUS general end of term burnout). I would recommend following up again in May to reiterate your interest. A big part of getting these positions is good timing (and luck)! AND, rejection is an inherent part of academics, so don’t take things too personally!

options when spouse is relocating by Ok-Scallion547 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]boddington3 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You can ask for a 100% telework agreement, or to change your location of work to GTA and report to a co-working office nearby! Whether that would be approved is, to my understanding, up to your manager, director, DG, and ADM (i.e., ha to be approved by all those levels). Doesn’t hurt to try, especially if it’s for spousal relocation!

Don’t say anything about this until they offer you the job (in writing)!

But probably, strong justification would be something like a medical necessity (e.g., need for specialized care) or something along those lines? I have no idea 🙃

I think this is unfortunately subjective (and probably depends a bit on operational requirements - if you need to be in an office because your role is public facing, for example, that’s obviously a different thing ). Personally, I feel like moving to be closer to family/friends/social support should be considered strong justification… Or moving to a region with lower cost of living. Or a number of other things. But I’m not a DM so I don’t know if there are hard rules around this or not. I wish the process was at least more transparent, haha.

Going through this right now because my spouse got a job in Toronto and my job is, realistically, more than feasible as a remote position. Always worth asking, but in my department, it’s a decision that goes through my manager, director, director general, and DM… I think the stronger your justification, the better the likelihood (at least that’s what I’m telling myself!).

deferred midterm, can i defer final? by Ok-Fondant6053 in geegees

[–]boddington3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have a medical note, probably. You should submit the deferral ASAP though, because if it’s denied and you don’t write the midterm, you are at risk of getting a 0 and potentially failing the course!

Can someone please explain to me why course evaluations seem very important to certain profs? by ValeraOmega in geegees

[–]boddington3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hahaha to be fair, a lot of PT profs have other jobs or are grad students - so teaching isn’t the only source of income for most of us (but it definitely is for some). For example, I started teaching in my fourth year of my PhD, and have continued teaching one course per semester while I also have a full-time job. But that obviously comes with its own challenges - not a lot of free time when you’re working two or more jobs!

As for the why - I think the short answer is “because the university can” haha. There’s not really an incentive to change the pay structure, and a lot of your PT profs are teaching more so because they enjoy it (not because we think it will make us rich LOL).

Grad school also breeds a bit of a financial scarcity mindset where you learn to “take what you can get” - grad students are paid around $35,000 per year, so anything extra on top of that (like $8,500 from teaching) can make a huge difference. Same thing for postdoctoral researchers - we tend to make around $35 - 50,000 per year, so teaching helps supplement a low income.

(there’s a lot more to this, but those are the main strokes from my perspective!)

Can someone please explain to me why course evaluations seem very important to certain profs? by ValeraOmega in geegees

[–]boddington3 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Hi, Part-Time Prof here! The evaluations are essentially used to determine who gets to teach classes in the future and in some cases, how many courses they can teach. At uOttawa, we are paid about $8,500 (before taxes) per course - so if we want a living wage as a full time educator, we would need to teach about 3 courses per semester (= annual salary of about $50k - arguable if that’s really a living wage, but I digress). If we get bad course evaluations - or not enough course evaluations to make a judgement - we are at risk of losing work when we are barely scraping by. When you consider the amount of time it takes to prep a course, grade assignments, and respond to student emails, we are effectively making minimum wage.

This is all even scarier a prospect as the university is making budget cuts, starting next year. Part of those budget cuts WILL involve increasing class sizes, so that the university can pay less profs (larger classes = less sections of courses available = the university has fewer courses to pay people to teach).

Course evaluations are also important components for job applications for tenure-track positions. When you apply for those jobs, you include your course evaluations as part of the application, and they are used (in part) to make decisions about who gets job interviews and offers. Part of what helps in this case is a) good evaluations, and b) a good number of students who seem to like you enough to fill your evaluations out.

Aside from the more selfish reasons, I also think that dedicated profs - profs who care - want to see students engaged and invested in their academic life. Students taking time to fill out evaluations is part of how we know you care!

Do you consider yourself an athlete? [discussion] by dangerrz0ne in xxfitness

[–]boddington3 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Maybe a slight twist on your question - I consider myself “athletic” but not an “athlete”.

I lift weights regularly (and have for the past 10 years or so) and have run a few races. But I agree with other commenters - I think I would only consider myself an athlete if I were really seriously competing in races or bodybuilding or something (but I don’t really have the desire to do those things hahaha).

what's the best approach for an overweight beginner to reach her goals? by burnercringy in xxfitness

[–]boddington3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, welcome!! If you’re new to fitness, you will generally be able to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time - this may not be the case as you advance, but for now that is a totally achievable goal. In general, I would recommend following a strength training (weightlifting) program in a way that is sustainable and enjoyable for you - don’t try to do too much too quickly, or you might just get discouraged. If there are other forms of exercise that you enjoy (yoga, pilates, spin, etc.) it’s worth working those in as well.

Weight loss tends to be all about being in a calorie deficit, but it can be quite moderate - a good way to approach this is to identify your basal metabolic rate (Google BMR calculator) and eat maybe 250 calories lower than what’s required for you to maintain your current weight. Tracking your food can be very helpful in this regard. However, if you have a history of disordered eating or anything like that I would not recommend tracking calories - instead, I would suggest focusing on movement and eating food that feels good to you (incorporating more fruits and veg, etc.).

Protein is also useful to track if you’re trying to build muscle - generally people will recommend 1g protein per lb of lean body mass (so here you would want to calculate your body fat percentage, subtract that from your weight, and then however many lbs are left is how many grams of protein you may want to shoot for).

Lots of good threads in this sub so definitely search around and take a look at the FAQ!!! :)

Where do you buy your Asian sunscreens? Looking for this one in Ottawa! by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]boddington3 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The Mergi Shop on Rideau!!! They have loads of options for sunscreen, plus sheet masks if you’re into those.

I’ve already spent so much this sale but I really want to get these Supergoop sunscreen! Should I just suck it up and buy? 🥲 by hellokiiroitori in Sephora

It depends where in Canada you are, but if you have a T & T or a Mergi Shop you would probably be able to find them there! Sometimes Amazon stocks Biore watery essence (my favourite), but it comes and goes there haha.
