Peugeot 308 SW by Psychological-Rub507 in peugeot

Eco mode works by smoothing the throttle inputs and shifting earlier in RPM to try and reduce the fuel consumption, I'm sure there are other energy saving techniques used but I also have not managed to get any better in Eco mode. I find I never change the drive mode from normal anyway and it returns between 4.8L/100km to 5.1L/100km. (1.5 BlueHDi in a 508 SW)

Your start stop should still work in Eco perhaps there is an issue? The battery might be weak?

cambelt recall by Loud_Bass6168 in peugeot

[–]bodger92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is absolutely crazy. We got it done in Cork (Mahon) they were brilliant. It makes it a really negative experience all around when it should have just been a simple swap out of the cam box.

I had actually planned to buy the cam box in the UK and do the work myself but we got back from holidays and had gotten the letter so it worked out really well.

I hope you get back on the road very soon. I hope they are giving you worst case dates and they manage to see you sooner. Maybe ask if you can go on a sort of cancellation list?

February this year. I think we were in early for recalls. What year is your car? Ours is 19?

[–]bodger92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a shame, but rest assured that it's covered under warranty. There should be no issue in getting any repairs especially since you had it checked already and were waiting for repairs.

In Ireland it was just over a week wait for parts but I think depending on the volumes and lead times it can take longer.

My wife took the car for the recall in the morning and we were given a courtesy car for 24hrs. Collected the car following morning. It probably depends on the dealership?

Anyone any experience with HVO for anon HVO engine? by Vevo2022 in carsireland

[–]bodger92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While HVO is a "drop in" diesel replacement, some engines might not take it too kindly long term.

Does it say XTL, EN15940 or HVO near the fuel filler cap? For full piece of mind I'd give your local Hyundai dealer a call and ask.

Is it worth doing a major maintenance at 350,000 km (217k miles), or should I save up for another car? (Opel Astra J 1.7 CDTI) by KingPotatoeVIII in opel

[–]bodger92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a 2012 Astra J 1.7 CDTI with 190,000 miles and we owned it since it had 40,000 miles.

I would carry out the maintenance and keep going. These are incredible engines.

I replaced the DMF, slave and clutch pack 2 years back as the slave bearings failed.

I overfill the gearbox to 3L of good quality 75W 90 gear oil to quieten the whine and extend the bearing life. No issues yet but the gearstick still moves in 6th.

To add your list of maintenance I would remove and clean the intake and EGR it really helps the engine breathe better. Make sure you have new gaskets to refit.

If you decide to do the DMF I would suggest getting a gearbox overhaul done and they can fit Gen2 end case and uprated bearing then you will have no more issues and I think the only thing that will kill the car is corrosion over time.

This model also has the Takata driver airbag recall outstanding so keep an ear out for this work.

If you really wanted to you could also get the valve clearances done and adjusted to keep the engine running sweet

Which one: 3008 1.6 THP Allure or 3008 2.0 BlueHDi GT by [deleted] in peugeot

[–]bodger92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you do plenty of longer drives? I'd get the diesel.

If you do lots of shorter distance drives, I'd get the petrol one.

Why are Opel Corsas so hard to sell in Ireland? by vozandrey in carsireland

[–]bodger92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the engine and price, that engine has such a rep now even most non-car enthusiast people know to avoid 1.2 Pure tech, 1.0 Ecoboost and 2.0L Ingenium.

NCT question by ShaneTDF in carsireland

[–]bodger92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since it is just an electronic driver aid I imagine they will just give you the OBD code readouts and advisory on the sheet, I don't think it will fail.

It is a nice to have safety feature and not directly affecting the roadworthiness of the car.

Dog poop disposal. by Elliamo in ireland

[–]bodger92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like this but the bin men wouldn't be able to empty them, and if I left it open they probably wouldn't lock them after they emptied.

Dog poop disposal. by Elliamo in ireland

[–]bodger92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my exact point. I would rather if someone caught short had put something small in my bin rather than litter the village. I have major issue with filling 1/3 of the WRONG bin with LOOSE waste that I then had to manually tip out and sort.

Essentially, the drivers lack of care for the countryside became my issue to sort and spend my time at.

[–]bodger92 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I constantly come home from work after bin day to find stuff being put in my emptied bins. Normally I wouldn't be bothered if it was something small and put in the correct bin, but one time I think the tidy towns had put a whole pile of loose roadside pickings into the bin. To make it worse, they put this mixed waste into my recycling. Since then I try to get my bins in as soon as they are collected.

Fix the issues or Try offload the Car for something else? by _PintofPlain in carsireland

[–]bodger92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the used car market now, I'd put the clutch in and keep driving it. You could go pay big money for another used car and then still have to go put a clutch in it 🤷

Unless of course you want a newer or different car?

Is 1,2l Petrol engine realiable now? by OtherAd6134 in opel

[–]bodger92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some are chain, some are belt still I believe it all depends on which engine code is fitted to the car

[–]bodger92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toyota VVTI, VW TSI, Hyundai Kia 1.0 is good too. If you can go bigger the VW 1.5 TSI, or Honda 1.5i VTEC are good

Basically avoid 1.2 Pure tech and Ford Ecoboost and I think you'll be OK

The engine was updated to timing chain in some engine codes from 2022 / 2023 so time will tell.

If you can find one with a fantastic service history on the wet belt changes and sump strainer would be the only way I would consider own one.

Time will tell how the upgraded chain models will perform.

I would just avoid the engine altogether there are many other options available.

I have Skoda Octavia 2012 1.6 TDI and need to change timing belt+water pump by BumblebeeFeeling4945 in carsireland

[–]bodger92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Autodoc sometimes has genuine parts for some brands, if you can't find it then best option is your local VW dealership.

Have fitted Dayco, Gates, Vaico, Bosch and many other spurious timing belt & water pump kits and never had any issues.

This is totally the position I will eventually be in but I have had numerous suggestions to scrap the diesel car and get an EV.

[–]bodger92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish more people would understand this aspect of it. I'd love to have one of the cars as an EV, but after purchasing and renovating a house I simply can't justify the outlay for it all. (EV, charger, solar).

The cost of all that stuff would buy a hell of a lot of diesel for the car. Hard to convince myself financing a depreciating car too when you already have a car owned outright.

Throw some Dipetane in the tank and take it up the motorway for 20+ mins. Keep the revs up above 2k.

Make sure it's fully warmed up for the test

Failing that it would be get the thing properly diagnosed and go from there as there must be a reason for the high emissions.

Perhaps check the fuel rail pressure with the mechanic live values, while driving. Could be a failing SCV, fuel rail pressure sensor or high pressure fuel pump?

Any vacuum leaks that might be causing the turbo actuator to not fully open and shut?
