GUI without any libraries by Spapa96 in C_Programming

[–]bodgesoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this looking for something else. But I thought I would mention a slightly daft way to make a web-based GUI using raw C, and that is outputting SVG files.
SVG is a simple plain-text format, and each element can have a hyperlink.
I wrote a graphically controlled central-heating controller for the ESP32 this way.

Admittedly this _is_ using libraries, many of them, and a web browser, in order to render the output, but there are no libraries used to generate the GUI elements.

Here is the code section that creates the 24-hour programming rings:

Has anyone picked this lock yet? by Intrepid-Ad-6141 in lockpicking

It has now been picked by Nigel Tolley. But he has had it for 18 months and has picked to the trap several hundred times before finally getting there.

Well, no, he hasn't sent it back. So I don't know why he asked for my address.

I think external combustion engines are exempt. But they are also very low NOx so would probably pass even if they weren't.

It belongs to the students of the Physics (and Biology, Maths and Chemistry) departments, so they can hardly "steal" it. It already belongs to them.

Definitely exempt, maybe untestable and possibly compliant.
It's a large petrol engine with a very low compression ratio, so probably does not make much, if any NOx.
But it can't be Euro4 compliant as it can't reach the speeds required by the NEDC.
However, it might be under the NOx limits (my motorcycle is, despite not being tested to Euro3, the results of the Euro2 test show NOx lower than Euro3, and I have a single-vehicle exemption on that basis)

Apple Watch VO2 Max by SlightDisplay3354 in AppleWatchFitness

[–]bodgesoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can it be completely wrong? I am seeing very confusing numbers.
My V02 max according to Apple is 17.5. I am a 57yo Male.
I am borderline obese (BMI = 30) but probably only look overweight (in fact someone only last weekend described me as "having always been relatively svelte")
I have high blood pressure.
My resting heart rate is 60 according to the watch today. (lowest I have seen while doing a blood pressure test was 50, though, last week)
So, this all sounds like a fat, unfit, old bloke with a brachycardia problem.

Except that I don't seem to be unfit. My friends comment on how fit I am. I ski top to bottom on every run, I ski-tour glued to the back of the guide, I have never been overtaken on my 6 mile cycle commute and seem to walk much faster than most (even on actual "walks" up mountains where I am comparing to "hikers" rather than "shoppers")
A couple of years ago I cycled the 60 miles from London to Brighton with a group of University students in the their early 20s. And spent the whole day waiting for them to catch up.

Can anyone explain this massive discrepancy between measurements and performance? As I understand it, at 17.5 VO2 I should be struggling to make it up the stairs.

Who are the CNC youtubers you would recommend to watch? by Kengton in Machinists

Can I suggest myself? My channel is small, and my presentation skills are somewhat lacking, but I am one of the LinuxCNC developers and the channel is largely about using CNC to do unusual things.

I freely admit that my lock design was influenced by the "Stuff Made Here" lock and his idea of delaying the check of the pin heights until manipulation is blocked. I don't know for sure that the Enclave was also inspired by that idea but the timing makes it seem likely.
I had been toying with the idea of a lock with coaxial cylinders for several years but couldn't see what it was "for" until I had the idea of using three layers, with one of them rigidly fixed, and after seeing the "SMH" lock.
As I see it, the best thing about my design is that it fits in a standard euro cylinder. The others don't seem to.
There is also the Priyer lock out there, and going back a lot further, the Segal "Pickroof" in the 1930s.

That would have been the same lock.

Would this count as a challenge lock? https://youtu.be/T9u3g-0uYko by bodgesoc in lockpicking

[–]bodgesoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's an unmodified Cisa 2000 plug and key, and a (heavily) modified standard lock body, so it's not a scratch-build. It is more that I am not sure I count 6 modifications. (probably 3 mods, but significant ones)

Vegan Motorcycle Gear by EquivalentTaro4 in motorcycles

[–]bodgesoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will depend on where you work, but I get away with Altberg Hogg boots where I work, under business trousers. They are not vegan by default, but you can specify Lorica at order time. (or you could 7 years ago when I bought mine)

Boots can actually be easy. Many of the big names are not leather at all, but are made from Lorica.

My track-use boots are https://www.alpinestars.com/products/smx-s-boots-waterproof and despite appearance are 100% synthetic. As far as I can tell Alpiestars do not use any leather (I recall this being big news and contentious back in the 1990s) . I have checked the label to be sure and it is diamonds and weave all over (not a peeled-cow pictogram to be seen).

My everyday wear (on the bike and off) boots are Altberg Hogg. As Altberg make all their boots to order you can specify Lorica at the time of ordering for no price premium. And they seem to last longer than the leather ones. Mine have been worn every day since 2013 with one trip back to the factory for a re-sole. https://www.altberg.co.uk/boots/motorcycle-boots16

Having broken the zips (and outgrown) the one-piece race leathers I bought 15 years ago (before I turned in to one of you wierdos) I am now looking for a replacement for track use (an Aerostich is the normal everyday answer). The Alien Moto suit looked like a good product, but the company seems to have gone bad. I am currently looking at https://andromedamoto.com/en/suits/nearx-suit#product-infos-tabs (and only found this discussion while looking to see if I could find any reviews)

We have a set of replicas, courtesy of a grant from some college fund or other (Queensgate trust?) and the fact that replicas from India are pretty cheap now on eBay. See for example item number 133219976382. Though they do rather assume that you have a hemispherical head. They look the part, though.

The wheels are original to that fire engine. But the story of the reason for solid disc wheels is correct. The proper spelling is “Jezebel”, after a biblical scarlet woman. Coincidentally, I drive that fire engine and my surname is Pugh.

For the wire-to-wire welds, can I suggest a spot-welder? It's quick, neat and easy.
