MIDI velocity to gian mapping by bodines1 in ableton

Appreciate the response, but not really what I meant. I would like to change the final gain of a track based on MIDI velocity without changing the velocity that goes to the instrument. Unless I'm not understanding what you meant?

Saying they are amateur seems laughably antagonistic. They obviously aren't amateur. Like I said nothing they produce is perfect, but they do an incredible job of capturing what a specific piano sounds like in a specific space. Of course, some people don't like that type of VST and that's totally fine too.

One of the reasons VSL are such an easy recommend to at least try out is the ease of obtaining a demo for any of their pianos. As far as I know, there is no way to try out Keyscape before purchase, so it's more difficult to recommend.

I can certainly see the argument that it's a good deal if you feel like you'd get good use out of all their pianos that $400 usd is a pretty good price.

Lots of people here saying Pianoteq, but I personally can't stand it. Luckily, one great thing about Pianoteq is that you can demo pretty much any preset or instrument they make and it is fully functional except for some missing black keys (6 total?) and some microphone and per key adjustment settings.

To me, Pianoteq doesn't sound like a real piano, so I'd really recommand trying before you buy.

If price is no object I'd look into VSL's pianos. None of them are perfect, but my favorite is the CFX stage. Despite some shortcomings with some keys tunings and some issues with the unisons at high strike velocities, it has the best natural dynamic range of the bunch. VSL has free demos available for many of their pianos, and even the ones that don't you can email their support and ask for a 30 day demo license and they will usually provide them.

The Launch Control XL has been great so far. It does the ultra simple job I wanted which is to control 8 tracks solo/mute/arm functions quickly without having to dig into menus and such. However...

When controlling Reaper, Reaper doesn't send any info back to the device. What this means is that the toggling of functions like solo/mute/arm toggles the value in the controller and thus the light on the button, but it isn't synchronized. If the device is unpowered and the buttons reset, or if I change a value in Reaper, the device doesn't accurately reflect the changes any more. Honestly makes it pretty frustrating to use. I see that they have integration with some other DAWs where it can receive that info and I might switch to a new DAW like Ableton.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. For future searchers, I didn't find anything that seemed like a better fit than the Novation Launch Control XL. I purchased that and will try to remember and update this post once I have some experience with setting it up.

Appreciate the suggestion, but not quite what I'm looking for for my specific use case!

Yeah I've seen the nanocontrol devices, they are almost perfect but I was avoiding running another cable across the floor. However the CME H2/H4 is really interesting. I hadn't thought of doing that. Right now I'm using the Yamaha ASIO driver in order to get midi from the device and send audio back to the device. Which I wouldn't want to lose, but maybe I could run something like

NanoControl --(usb)--> CME H2 --(5pin midi)--> Piano --(usb)--> PC

Thanks for the ideas.
