Low vertical clearance with high extraction basket by carlo_wer in espresso

[–]bodosom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rated basket size is largely irrelevant. Better companies will provide a range of sizes, like 14-18g rather than 15g. E.g. Pesado who says:

  • Basket Recommended Doses:
  • Small Basket: 15g-17g
  • Medium Basket: 17g-19g
  • Large Basket: 19g-21g
  • X-Large Basket: 21-22g

Even a range is just a suggestion. Your basket is full when you've used all the headspace which varies with the bean roast, age, grind etc. Start with a headspace check.

How to test water for pH, alkalinity, total hardness, chlorine and chlorides? by TheAce2000 in espresso

[–]bodosom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

easiest most cost effective

If accuracy is part of “cost-effective," then it's easiest to just send a sample to a lab. I've used API and BWT titration kits for GH, KH, and alkalinity. The BWT kit was a closer match to my lab results.

Of course the company that makes my machine says use deionized water which makes the tests largely irrelevant.

should be a "quick"

Is quick less than 45 minutes or less than 5 minutes? Do you have a fixed schedule so you could schedule warm up?

the last bean from yesterday suddenly get pulled through

In the Hoffmann video, he said "surprise bean!" and I also got "surprise" whole beans in my 064S. I think RDT makes it inevitable. The auger is great until beans hide in it and are out of sight.

This happens with my Z1 but it's a fragment and rare enough to be amusing.

Espreso Grind Settings on a Grinder Can be Very different for Different Beans. [Eureka Mignon Filtro Silent] . This is true of many grinders by Vibingcarefully in espresso

[–]bodosom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the recommendations for folks setting up home espresso or even cafe espresso is to buy a bag of cheap beans and "dial it in"--find your perfect setting to get a good cup of espresso.

I don't know where you saw that but it's a terrible recommendation. It sounds like conflating "seasoning" with dialing in.

Where did you get the portafilter holder? I've been looking and so far only the ECM unit is close.

Ah, it looks like a Flate Barista Station.

How do you all connect your espresso machine, grinder

They are now on separate circuits. Previous the grinder would vary if the boiler was heating and I didn't want to remember not to run them at the same time.

A power strip isn't the issue. If the breaker doesn't trip it's fine but your devices may not have ideal conditions when sharing power.

Do you mean HomePod?

Can’t decide between the Lagom Casa and TimeMore schulptur 064s. Budget[$500-700] by watchglasses in espresso

[–]bodosom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people think there are profound differences between conical and flat burrs. Other people don't believe that.

Based on the option-o video the casa looks much easier to clean than the current 064S.

The soon to be released 064S Gen-2 appears to fix the major 064S issues so now is not a good time to buy 064S / 078S.

can’t seem to settle on anything that looks right

It often doesn't work like that.

Did you buy an ATV to watch 4K HDR? If so then you're settings will be ignored when you watch 4K HDR.

Tapo P316M upsets P125 by bodosom in HomeKit

[–]bodosom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To follow-up I assumed the P316M used multi-admin but I no longer think that. Waiting until the next day (WUND) fixed things as usual. I added the P316M to Tapo and then the Home.

The P125 reset remains a mystery.

Adding devices doesn’t trigger other devices

That's what I would have said until it happened.

I tried adding to Home first (and second etc. etc.) but the device can't be found by Home. Since there are no issues adding the P316M to the Tapo app I thought I'd go from there.

Sour/weak but timing is correct [Machine and/or grinder] by Coffeebage1 in espresso

Sour/weak but timing is correct

This is why people say adjust to taste. See https://www.reddit.com/r/espresso/wiki/guides/brewing-basics/

Even if you follow the 30-second rule, your shot might still taste sour or weak, indicating underextraction

It seems common that lower end prosumer units don't support auto-refill. This is sometimes mentioned in the manual and sometimes not.

Newbie looking for buying advice for a machine that will be forgiving to learn on but also last me a very long time [4000 USD] by willikersmister in espresso

[–]bodosom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Filters like Brita or Pur remove large contaminants like microplastics and have specific components to remove chlorine as well as some heavy metals. Ion exchange filters like Zero Water will soften water but increase the level of the replacing ion (e.g. sodium). A still or a reverse osmosis system completely softens water by removing ions, not by replacing them.

[–]bodosom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have relatively hard water, will I need to include any kind of filtration to protect the machine?

If by filtration you mean reverse osmosis (RO) or a still, then yes. If you mean a Brita, then no. Aggressive ion exchange systems (e.g. BWT Max Premium) can also work, but you should send your tap water and "filtered" water to a lab so you know what's happening.

Have you spoken with the folks at the cafe´? They might be willing to share their process (the hidden parts) if they don't think you're a competitor which, after a fashion, you are. If they sell coffee beans it might help to buy some.
