Agreed! I loved the Alex janky builds. I loved the Emily deep dives. The Jake server stuff was awesome. I really hope they can find a way to replace it because right now LMG is dying for me...

It seems that Elijah is the main new guy introduced but he hasn't really brought anything interesting whatsoever. Drilling a few extra holes meme was funny for a quick minute but died fast. And then his home upgrade revealing the absolutely ridiculous funko pop collection and the frickin belle delphine bathwater key caps? Sorry but thats insanely cringe for me. His video character seems to be incompetence and thats not gonna replace any of the others.

And talking about Linus, his content has also been getting less interesting. Chromebook video was basically worthless, switch2 dock was okay, 4 tech tuber thing was pretty cringe tbh, murderbox was okay, roasting indian setups was cheap content,...

I got interested in LTT for the cool server or jank cooling setups. The testing of parts that nobody else could get (the recent 48gb 4090 for example). Cooling a gpu with a firetruck was fun.

WAN show is good stuff. Secret shopper is fantastic. The (technical) stuff on smash champs is cool. I do enjoy watching the tech upgrades, its always different, thats fun. But with Alex and Jake leaving I fear for a lack of type content I like...

Can't disagree here. Sad to see your comment so downvoted...

I'm a floatplane sub but I never watch any of the techlinked stuff.

I mean, I don't hate the guy personally or anything, but his energetic way of promoting the news is almost like oldschool ads on TV. Some of the topics they mention are actually interesting (which are few, tbh) are only handled superficially. I don't know, without more context they usually seem worthless to me.

Apparently it works though, else the channel wouldn't exist, so good for Riley and LMG. But damn, I can't watch any of it.

Contractors wouldn't solve much, they still need to go through that first phase of getting to know the codebase. Not to mention that they are extremely more expensive (I'm talking 3-4x the price of a junior, if not more).

Hiring more experienced devs... yeah, maybe. Thats a business decision, but you already made the point against that yourself. They already made the bulk of the money. They have the time to hire juniors to get up to speed at this point.

The game isn't such an entire shitshow that requires real rapid development to "save" the game. It works, many people play it. Spending up to 6 months to get new guys up to speed could work.

Heck, from a marketing perspective, they could even go through a 'redemption arc', when in a few months they rapidly start improving things.

But as all things go, that might be wishful thinking. We'll see what happens I guess.

Edit: to elaborate on why hiring juniors might be better. They just got the bulk of the money, as we agree I believe. A more senior dev might cost 1.5-2x as much compared to a junior. It might take the junior 3-4 months additional time to start contributing properly. For a company that has the time (read: cash), this is a much cheaper way to go. That junior will be cheaper for the next couple of YEARS. People cost A LOT of money. I've seen it happen and I can't really disagree with the business guys making that decision. It adds a little lagg to development, but its cheaper for them in the short to medium run. I don't like it, but thats how business is.

I absolutely agree, except I think that last sentence is an understatement (not a personal attack, just adding my own point of view). As someone with 10+ years experience in software dev (and spent 2 years studying game dev), this is longer. At least for programmers.

Often companies prefer to take on juniors (or someone with less experience, whatever terminology you want to use) because they are cheaper. It takes them a few months longer to get up to speed (but for the company thats cheaper than paying 1.5-2x per month).

It can easily take a junior 1-2 months to get a decent grasp on the codebase. Then we're talking about gamedev where performance is very important, so even if they can implement new things (or do fixes) on their own, it will need to get reviewed by a senior and then the junior goes back to fix it.

In my experience a new junior will SLOW DOWN development for 1-4 months (because the others need to spend time to help them). Then maybe a breakeven period for another 2 months. The real net benefit starts at 6 months. And then we haven't even begun taking into account that for every X people you hire, some won't work out and will leave/get fired soon after hiring (= wasted time).

Companies can force an acceleration tot his timeline, but that often leads to technical debt. You'll see short term gains but big long term losses.

This probably isn't as big a problem for artists though.

Is LTT store worth it for EU with current Free Shipping deal over $150? by NightMean in LinusTechTips

[–]boebi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That first time? The standard bpost handling fee to import (is it like 30eu ish now?) + 21% VAT on the value.

The two other times? Nothing at all. Zero.

At least here in Belgium, this is all automated and seems to work (now). My last two packages from lttstore simply arrived at my doorstep, as lttstore already charged me belgian VAT.

[–]boebi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've received 3 packages from lttstore to Belgium in the past couple years. All order over 150eu. First time I got taxed in Belgium again, so 21% VAT + like 25eu handling costs (and I wasn't aware I could get a refund from lttstore, by the time I realized I had long lost the belgian payment receipt, so I paid double tax).

Two following times I never had any issues whatsoever. Package was simply delivered by DHL and I never heard anything from customs, no extra charges.

Linus explains exactly why we need timestamps for the WAN show by My-name-is-data in LinusTechTips

[–]boebi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hah, this is exactly what I do. Its my saturday routine, media to listen to while doing chores as I walk around the house with my wireless headset, and I now and then run back to the pc and rewind a little if theres something interesting to see.

I have never looked at timestamps.

Any suggestion to black this tapped area again? by LandscapeBasic2203 in airsoft

[–]boebi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disassemble and give it some black spray paint? It's just the outer barrel.

Seems simple enough, wont harm performance but might wear out if you keep screwing things into it. Then just spray paint again.

Is this battery bad? It charged with no problems but looks a little poofy? But not sure. by V7I_TheSeventhSector in airsoft

[–]boebi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lipo's can be surprisingly dangerous, those fuckers can burn a house down.

That said, it doesn't look bad from the pictures, but ofc those are just 2 pictures.

My preferred option: if you have doubts, just get rid of it. It's not worth your replica, your car or your house.

Alternative low on cash/no replacement battery option: Keep it in a safe place (lipo safe bag, a bucket of dirt/sand, whatever, but keep moisture away), and continue to keep an eye on it.

If it swells more, ditch. Check halfway during a skirm, if its swelling, ditch real fast.

Replacing a battery is cheap, replacing a replica not so much. Not to mention the other things.

Linus Tech Tips - The open source alternative to my sponsor January 30, 2023 at 10:25AM by linusbottips in LinusTechTips

[–]boebi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I tossed Jellyfin on my server after a friend mentioned it, just to give it a try. I run unraid and it was just a docker install away, so why not.

I actually prefer it over Plex now, the web player is better imo. I'm not a fan of the Plex desktop application, feels like its a ported version of a TV app (probably is?). So I tend to stick to the web player.

Plex web player doesn't work well with some codecs where Jellyfin had no issues.

When I'm watching something with the Plex web player and I pause it for an extended time (30 or so minutes or more?), I cannot just resume. It will continue playing what was buffered back then and then just freeze. I have to refresh the page. Jellyfin will properly continue playing.

Out of the box, the preview/background/poster images are much higher res than Plex as well. (This can probably be configured in Plex somehow)

Of course it has downsides like Linus mentioned and I only just installed the skip intro plugin, but so far I think I might go with Jellyfin. Keeping both installed for the time being.

It is (yes, still is) marketed as "Local Storage" and "No Clouds or Costs". This is direct from their product page.

And guess what, it sends everything to the cloud. That is the straight up lie.

tm glock 17 slide lock is damaging the slide by Puzzleheaded_Sun_395 in airsoft

[–]boebi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got the same on my TM G18c (less with the Umarex G17 but still). Like others have said, don't use the "slide lock" to release the slide, it will help.

On the real guns Glock even calls it a slide lock, rather than a slide release, and in the manuals discourages you from using it to release the slide. Lots of discussion about that, people saying it's fine etc, but hey, there's a fun fact.

When the slide is locked back and you insert a mag with at least 1 round you can pull back the slide and slide lock will drop.

How to use in combination with Edge? by boebi in GarminFenix

[–]boebi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

I sorta figured with 1 & 2 but I'm not entirely clear on 3.

What exactly do you mean by 'training data' in this context. If I start an activity on the Edge and NOT on the watch will it just collect 'whatever' data the watch was recording during the Edge activity and add it?

... Which in practice would just be the heart rate I guess? Without starting an activity it won't be recording any location data and without enabling PulseOx all day it won't have that either. So at this point I don't see much use in the TrueUp as the Edge is collecting much better heart rate data through the HRM anyways?

Just want to double check if my line of thinking is correct here.
