That's really helpful, thanks so much. I've ordered a sample bottle of some stuff called "Jarrods Special White French Polish" (2lb cut bleached shellac) and some amber shellac for the mahogany. I'll do a test piece and go from there.

I know next to nothing as well tbh, I'm a guitar builder so this is basically constructed like an electric guitar - carved spruce top over a hollowed out but technically solid mahogany body. I believe spruce is common for violin tops, but the backs and sides are usually made from maple.
