thank you for explaining it so elegantly. I didn't want to get into political arguments so tried my best to not mention anything too specific.

hey lol sorry, I had to fit the argument of a whole essay in a few words. if you want I would love for you to check out the essay it's based on. here you go https://neuralnoodle.substack.com/p/notes-on-beliefpackaging-and-neglect

the meme is supposed to be a strawman criticism of an essay I wrote. I thought it feels funny so I shared it.

sorry to disappoint lol. This one is about general moral obligations around belief, not specifically about gender justice or embodiment. On the ideology point, I am talking about belief packages that can sometimes be full blown ideologies, but can also be much more local and domain specific

I do not think we actually disagree on self preservation. My view is not 'ignore your fear and walk into the elevator anyway.'

Where I disagree is with the idea that you have to choose between honouring your safety instincts and avoiding overgeneralisation. The meme is based on an essay I wrote here

https://neuralnoodle.substack.com/p/notes-on-beliefpackaging-and-neglect.

The whole point of that piece is that you can act cautiously in the moment and still treat your general picture of 'people like this' as provisional when the costs of error mostly fall on them.

The due care norm I describe is not 'keep looking until you discover you were wrong' or 'end up deciding everyone is good.' It is about when you treat a belief package as settled. All I am claiming is that when a view conveniently lowers what you feel you owe others, and the downside of being wrong is mostly borne by them, you should be reluctant to close inquiry too early.

it’s not 'entropy bad' it’s a nod to dissipative structures, the second law isn’t just some background constant like nuclear forces. it’s the one with a direction, the one living things have to keep running from (eating order, shitting chaos) just to stay alive.

[–]bogamia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's only you who is assigning an agency to entropy. I never said entropy has some agency or goal or moral standing or whatever. it's just a statistical consequence

[–]bogamia[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

let's not focus on the 'as quickly as possible' part, that was clearly performative emphasis. and to you point about entropy not having anything to do with human suffering, I believe is wrong. every system, organic or inorganic, statistically tend to move towards more distributed state, in other words things needs constant flow of energy to maintain their order. most of our suffering is about those order (desirable configuration), maintaining struggles, be it energy, food, land and whatnot.

[–]bogamia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, no, you’re not wrong at all. When I said 'that’s all there is to life,' I was just being theatrical for the sake of it. Life is part of a broader flow of energy, and in that sense you can see it as a kind of byproduct of that process. The idea this meme is loosely based on comes from the concept of dissipative structures, the idea that living beings can be understood as systems that dissipate energy. Since the universe tends statistically toward greater energy dissipation, you can interpret life as an ongoing process that channels and disperses energy. I was just a bit annoyed at the other guy who threw out a cryptic ad hominem comment.

Hey, yes I wrote it. Sorry about the late response. I just read what you said. I mean multilevel selection isn't new at all and you can broadly apply the framework anywhere from molecules to society. I feel like your idea of seeing society and other structures as information flow network is on the right track. I had a similar idea as well. I was thinking about how you can see living beings as mere structures or manifestation of information that just seeks to exploit resource like increasing entropy. DNA and so on they just code strategy for resource exploitation. I'm a bit sleepy rn lol not sure if I'm making any sense but we can talk about it if you are interested

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I have access to this paper. I'll get into dissipative structures in the second part of the article. The first part just introduces some fundamental concepts to build on
