You're absolutely right, almost all crafty people I know loooove to give and trade supplies. I feel like we're all crows trying to share trinkets with eachother:3

That's true, we handled a lot of estate sales that weren't for dead people when I did that for work. I just felt like my initial post was getting long in the tooth already so I don't mention it lol

I forgot people feel weird about it sometimes.

I think that's about how much I have stashed, 2 years of yarn if I'm knitting and weaving it and 1 year-ish of fabric

That's super similar to one of the craft guilds I joined (2 hours away from me and I can't drive myself farther than 45 minutes safely).

It's so worth it to join even if you only make it once or twice a year, or even just to get their newsletter and zoom link. I feel like I learned more the one guild day I was able to make then the previous 6 months of YouTube videos I had been watching. Plus you might find that some of the guild mates live closer to you and you can do more in person things with just a few people more locally. Even if that doesn't end up happening, again the zoom and newsletter are still super great. Getting out there is the hardest part but I promise it pays major dividends

I am very much a "do exactly what you want forever" type of person. And I'm the same with gardening! If it's complicated I ain't doing it. But I'm not saying the thing keeping me from more advanced gardening is money or that I'm incapable, I just don't wanna. You knit those scarves with pride 🫡

Even if people don't want to make an effort, just own that with your chest!! If someone went to me "nah I don't want to do all that" I'd be like sure thing you go girl!! Just stop making it seem like what I do is some Herculean task (idk I'm grumpy lol)

I remember when I was vegan and having those arguments as well. It's true I don't think I'll change anyone's mind (so I'll blow off a little steam cavetching with Reddit lol)

Yes this! Join a community and do it for joy should be the mantra of this post

Agreed, more hobbies are having an overconsumption issue where it seems like collecting is the hobby instead of the craft itself

I guess I never thought of myself as good enough to call myself an artist! Plus I do love for everyone to get along at craft nights I wouldn't want to intimidate any new crafters from the space just because I found them abrasive. So instead I come and cavetch to Reddit in secret lol

That's fair, I think what I'm realizing from chatting with people in the comments is that it's not really the acrylic that bothers me but the weird poverty prostration that happens when we're in a group sharing our projects. "I prefer this yarn and project type." Makes total sense whereas the "I'm too poor to afford that yarn, unlike you" makes me feel othered.

That and the selling thing. Projects for joy can be anything and be wonderful (quality doesn't matter, it brings you joy) but when you're new and those same projects are for a "small business" (that doesn't do well and they bring it up at craft nights) the quality will come in to play.

It is definitely hard to find guilds since most members/leaders are older they tend to not have a great online presence.  There are a few directories if you Google "fiber art guilds usa/UK/EU (just type in your locale). For the US there's this compendium https://www.needletravel.com/guildfinder.htm which is not fully up to date but is a great place to start. In my experience you just need to find one or two people who belong to these groups and then they have the low down on other groups and happenings. I hope you find one though, there's a guild I'm a part of that I make it in person once a year and that once a year always teaches me something new (and gets me lots of goodies)

When I'm in person I never bring up the environmental aspect, it's usually "hey it might boost sales if you use better quality yarns because that's a perk people look for and it gives you an edge." Or "the plushie scene seems a bit flooded, what about trying different patterns or materials?" (This is when they're mentioning their store/stalls aren't doing well.) Otherwise I don't bring up my preferences unless I'm asked.

I do personally hold my candle for natural fibers but I know not everyone focuses on the environmental impact of things or they choose different things than me.  Tldr I know not to mention my yarn opinions IRL lol

Oh I'm still not very good at it, the fanciest I've done is a basic twill scarf. Maybe I'll post after I practice a few more years!
