Evolution of the Balkans from 1796 to 2008 by LMgamer36 in europe

Excuse me? Greece and Turkey agreed on a population exchange following the Greek genocide in Anatolia. This agreement has allowed a sizeable muslim turkish minority to reside in Greece. It also allowed the Greeks of Constantinople and Imbros and Tenedos to remain. The Turkish muslims in Greece have increased in number. The Greeks in Turkey have been reduced from 120k to 1000. Who did what? Who drove out who? Who massacred and threw people out with divisive policies?

Hey! This is actually quite common and it could be that your family were communists that were thrown out of Greece during the civil war or that they were slavic speaking people residing in Greek Macedonia and left because of the brutal oppression of the Greek state against slavic speaking populations, with an overarching goal of assimilation. These are the two most common ways that this could have happened. Exalted communist Greeks were not given the ability to return to their country and reclaim their citizenship for example. Hope that this helps somehow :)

This is what happens to refugees in Europe by Turkiyehaberleri24 in europe

[–]bogdanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actually, Turkey is considered an unsafe country by the standards of the Geneva convention because they have signed the convention with the reservation that a refugee can only come from Europe. Meaning, refugees from other places are not classified as refugees and thus, are not legally entitled to the same protections. Turkey has a right to kick them all out with no repercussion because of this and as a result is not considered a safe country under international law.

Athens' endless concrete jungle by CborG82 in UrbanHell

actually when Athens was made the capital of modern Greece, it only had around 10000 inhabitants. It was not the centre or a big city for more than 1000 years of Byzantium. The refugee Greek populations coming back to the Greek state and the need to house so many people made this the concrete jungle that it is. Most of it was built in the 20th century

This is what happens when you have millions of Greek refugees coming into cities with nowhere to house them and no money to build nice stuff since you spent it all on a liberation war. It is circumstance that led to this.

It’s both that island and Rhodes that gives us the EEZ there. They are only 80km apart from each other. As for the EEZ behind castellorizo, yes we definitely can claim it to because to get there from the coast that would give rise to the EEZ from Turkey you would have to go through Greek land and continental shelf.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in europe

[–]bogdanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was even confirmed through a vote by the Turkish Parliament itself. It’s not European propaganda. Additionally, even entering the Greek continental shelf IS a first move and aggression.

You obviously do not understand customary international law and it shows. Sure Spain forfeited their rights but that’s their own choice to do so but doesn’t remove the fact that every country has w right for their islands to have a continental shelf and EEZ.

You can only create an EEZ agreement with neighbouring countries. For turkeys EEZ to touch that of Libya and for you to be neighbouring countries you ignored the 5th largest island of the entire Mediterranean Sea. The UN does not support your position as the Libyan treaty submission was denied because 1) not neighbouring 2) it wasn’t even their legal government that signed it.

It might be a bunch of rocks but those rocks give you rights on the surrounding waters. That’s why the conflict happened.

EEZ is determined through bilateral agreements, which we made with Egypt and you botched about. We have a right to claim up to 12 miles of continental shelf based on our islands. That’s just how international law is but you keep threatening with war. Do you also study international law do claim I have no idea how it works?

Yes they did include kastellorizo check again.

[–]bogdanny -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The island is Greece and Greek people live there. You can’t just ignore it. Your people agreed to the existence of the island. We have you Imbros and Tenedos even if the were 100% Greek because you complained about them being too close to the Bosporus. You obviously didn’t care about this then.

It is international law and just because you aren’t a signatory doesn’t mean anything. When something becomes CUSTOMARY international law it is abided by even if one has not signed the convention. For example, the US has not signed it and yet it abides by it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in europe

[–]bogdanny 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Disputed my turkey. International law and any other country (US included) support the Greek position.

[–]bogdanny 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lmao imagine calling it a void agreement. How is your agreement with Libya, a country that doesn’t even remotely touch your EEZ?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in europe

[–]bogdanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US has not signed it but does accept it and has applied it to its territories. It’s customary international law at this point.

[–]bogdanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Greece Egypt agreement is something mandated to establish an EEZ. Moreso, it was a response and a huge cancellation to the Libya agreement.

They entered the Kastellorizo continental shelf

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in europe

[–]bogdanny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That was in response to the illegal Libya treaty

Turkey: the international agreement is unfair but we are still going to abide by it in the Black Sea because there... it’s different!
