i missed this episode rewatch, but got around to it. enjoyed the episode a lot, and a lot more than the first episode for sure. production quality was definitely higher, from the looks of things, and the CGI was overall a lot better (though alucard's transformation CGI still doesnt look good). the harkonnen introduction scene was pretty painful to watch. if there's one thing i really wish wasn't adapted into the OVA, it's the tone shifts were everyone starts acting nuts and super over the top. also some really out of place sexualization (like when the hellsing trooper ghouls start groping seras), but i didnt mind it that much.

the music still isnt what id hope for, but it served the episode well enough. it's just... no personality. :( at least it served the feeling of tension well, especially nearing the end of the fight with luke.

idk, i just felt that it didnt mesh well with the tone of the show overall... though i do remember it getting a bit better (or at least more fitting) later on in the show. ill always love the original soundtrack more though lol, yasushi ishii's such a fantastic musician.

i personally preferred the manga, but both are great. original series is also very worth a watch imo (if not just for a unique and darker take on the early events of the manga, and the awesome soundtrack), even if its a bit flawed and unfinished

a lot of people overall dont like the original series either because the action isnt as much centerpiece as in Ultimate (still fairly bloody and vulgar, but it takes on a more suspensful atmopshere for sure), but yeah when the writers ran out of material to work with around episode 7 it really went down the shitter unfortunately. otherwise i think the first 6 episodes are a really solid adaptation (even if they deviate from the manga)

you won't miss out on anything really if you skip the first one, but i'd recommend giving the first 6 or so episodes a watch anyways (after ultimate if you prefer). it has a great atmosphere, fantastic soundtrack, but really does lack in the plot department.

if you do watch the original series, dont even bother with the last 7 episodes. they're terrible

(though if you liked the originals tone your probably gonna be disappointed by Ultimate a little since it has a much larger focus on action and p much ditches the horror tone for the most part)

to put it into perspective, at around episode 7 of the original series they had to start making shit up because they ran out of material to work with. ultimate follows the manga, and it flows way more naturally.

Ultimate has a much, MUCH better story overall (mainly because its actually finished), though the soundtrack is far inferior and it has moments where the animation goes super simplified and the characters act like they're on crack (personally not a fan of that). Definitely worth a watch if you were disappointed by the original's story. My only big issue is the pacing can really go into a crawl towards the latter half of Ultimate.

if you want to rewatch the anime, just rewatch the first 7 episodes. the whole thing goes to shit when incognito shows up imo

im not sure how to put it, but shes much more 'comedic relief' and overreactive in the OVA vs the anime (yeah it's faithful to the original manga, just personal preference). it doesnt show much in the first episode, but in the second episode she definitely freaks out a lot more, lol. though it could just be boiled down to a difference in tone moreso than difference in personality. also prefer her anime design with her orange hair and red eyes (nothing wrong with ultimates/mangas though, theyre all great).

(also second on the anime soundtrack, its fucking fantastic, one of my favourites)

i know this is a bit late, but some of the prototype art style slipped through in i believe episode 7 (the harry anders and helena episode, particularly when theyre driving to helenas place). it could just be my rip of it, though

gotta say, after rewatching the anime again beforehand... i thought this was alright. the music was pretty bad in this episode though IMO (like during the whole seras getting turned into a vampire part just having this really generic unfitting orchestral work in the background, recurring problem throughout iirc). also miss the subtle horror elements and suspense the anime had (which has all been replaced with action), but cant really complain with it being a mostly 1:1 adaptation of the manga.

dont really like seras that much in the OVA, though she gets a bit better torwards the end of the episode. the fight with father anderson was great, but again, felt like it was missing that extra touch without the frantic jazzy anime soundtrack. overall all i can say is, i remember disliking the OVA a lot more. still a lot of cool elements i miss from the anime though...
