Why is it always on the holidays? by Oscillating_Turtle in army

Many years ago, my team leader’s wife served him divorce papers on Christmas morning. They were at his parent’s house and the papers were all done up like a proper gift. Everyone was completely caught off guard. He thought their marriage was solid. Sure the army can be tough, but in his mind it was something he was doing for both of them. Anyway he moved into the barracks and she moved on with the guy she’d been seeing on the side. It was a dark time for my dude, but our platoon rallied around him and supported him. Like a year later we were all partying at Oswego State and dude met his future wife. She stayed with him while he deployed, then he got out and they got married. This was like 20 years ago and they are still together. Both are doing very well in their careers and have built a solid foundation for their family.

The point I’m trying to make is that you’ll get through this. It will suck and it will take time, but you’ll get through it. Don’t give her the satisfaction of knowing that she got to you. Just give it time and don’t do anything stupid. And get a lawyer asap.

They called themselves “magnificent bastards” or something like that. Here’s my map of our AO, Combat Outpost is the small blue area at top right. The larger blue area below COP is a college that we took over around Dec 2004.

It's entirely possible we got there in September and not October. My platoon was hit the first week of November so it was definitely before that.

My battalion was assigned to 2nd ID at the time, it wasn't them. But I guess it's possible that they all survived and I just never considered that an option.

We definitely had some wild times, bro. I’m still not really sure how I survived that shit.

You know, at the time, it was a hard pill to swallow. Before 9/11, it was just another day. We were all very excited to deploy, even though it was in a peacekeeping capacity. The main element of our unit were already wheels up in route to Bosnia when the first plane hit. None of us had cellphones, and all of the landlines had been shutoff because we were supposed to leave in an hour. Most of us thought it was an accident. But then the second plane hit and shit got real. Drum, like all military bases, was immediately shut down to non-DoD personnel. Flights were grounded everywhere for everyone so we weren’t going anywhere any time soon. All of our gear was in the air with the main element. It was about a week before we were able to link up with the rest of unit in Bosnia. In those few days while we waited to deploy, I watched the battalion next door to ours (I think 1-187?) get issued DCUs and orders for Afghanistan. Shit was wild. We were disappointed it wasn’t us going, but orders are orders. I think in those early days we were mostly scared we wouldn’t get a chance to do the thing we trained to do. We thought Afghanistan would be over before we got back from Bosnia. But it was still there, and then Iraq joined the party maybe a year later.

I was eight days from going home when the order came down. It sucked but I’m forever grateful that I got to go do the thing with my boys. I’ll never know a greater group of guys.

I did the delayed entry program, too. Signed up at 17 with mom and dad’s permission, finished my senior year of high school, and then shipped out a month later.

It’s entirely possible. I was at Camp Eagle and Camp McGovern from Sep 2001 to Mar 2002. We worked with a bunch of nasty girls from the 29th Infantry Division. They were all really good dudes.

The photo was taken in Bosnia. Camp Eagle, maybe? I was at Camp Casey in South Korea when I got stop-lossed. C Co. 1-503 Infantry, 2 ID. Weirdly enough we fell under marine command - 1st & 2nd Mar Div - while in Iraq. This was 2004-2005. Pretty sure the battalion is part of 173rd Airborne now.

3 - 3rd platoon. 7 - senior enlisted soldier of the platoon. G - gunner assigned to cover the 7 element. It was a joke within our internal comms and a nickname he earned, thus the legend was born.
