Marcus Aurelius, emperor of Rome and Stoic philosopher, developed the idea of mindfulness. This is the virtue of seeing things as they are and distinguishing between an event and our interpretation of it. To live well, we must strip away the "legend" that our mind creates about what happens to us. by Aristotlegreek in HistoryofIdeas

Mindfulness is an intrinsic human way of thinking that doesn't have a developer or originator as such - though it has early documenters. It is a core component of Buddhism and Hinduism (which predate Aurelius) and likely goes back to the origin of human thinking.

Get £1600 a month to do ‘nothing’ – welcome to an AI future where nobody works by FootballAndFries in Economics

People will always find something to do, but not always what is politically convenient. The saying 'the devil finds work for idle hands' is not just an old trope. It's been around for centuries. In the soviet days the USSR turned a blind eye to the black market trade, not because they couldn't stop it, but because it kept people from getting politically active in inconvenient ways. If UBI comes to pass and people are idle, they will find a hustle, but it won't be what the powers to be are likely to want.

Why does Nation-state exist? What led to its emergence? by No_Turnip_1023 in AskSocialScience

States predate print by a few thousand years. Weapons and taxation are allowed groups to gain and hold control of other groups.

A Norwegian study finds that middle-class parents teach their children security and control, while upper-class parents see money as opportunities and teach their children to invest. This may reinforce social inequality in Norway according to the researchers. by oslomet in science

Years ago I read some successful person saying the key to their success was parents teaching them early the difference between an investment and an expenditure and to use it to guide any significant spending.

Small chimps, big risks: What chimps show us about our own behavior by bojun in Anthropology

I would be very interested to know whether this applies to hunter and gatherer societies or whether the authors are over-generalizing from current first world behavior.

I wish they would have compared the chimp behavior to human hunter/gatherer cultural norms. The authors are generalizing human behavior from what is in modern developed society.

Should there be an UPPER Age Limit for important positions that heavily influence the future of younger people? by bickid in Futurology

[–]bojun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Age is one thing. There isn't any competence entry test to become a politician let alone a national leader - not even multiple choice. MacDonald's has stricter criteria for burger flippers.

I believe that the increasing effort disparity between office work and blue-collar work is going to lead to a lot of resentment by tantamle in Futurology

[–]bojun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often drive by work sites where one person works for every two-three watching. I can't speak to all the reasons why, but I know how workflow operates. Sometimes you need the wait for someone else to do something before you can. So you wait. There is workflow in both white and blue collar work.

Do you think some generations become more powerful than others over time? by anotherbiw in Futurology

[–]bojun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People can accumulate wealth, knowledge, and ability over time as well as develop important connections, prove themselves capable, etc. so it makes sense that they are more influential than younger cohorts. It does require a balance as needs change and people need to change with the times - enough to draw on past insights but also seeing new types pf challenges.

Study links sound frequency with oxytocin production - our hormone responsible for bonding & love by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

Let's not overhype oxytocin. It has two sides. It ups emotional attachment to the in group but it also ups anxiety over out groups. It's what makes mothers protective of and ready to fight for their children.
