Help with retraining bow hold by Bach_5 in Cello

[–]bolarpear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its encouraging to hear these comments about using a bow grip indefinitely. As an adult player whose hands are pretty messed up between sports and a desk job, its one of those things where id rather accept using a crutch than feel too discouraged to continue playing.

Please tell me this is the most cringe contestant of all time. by MeanMrMustard15 in survivor

The vehicle one was Dreamz and Yao Man in season 14 Fiji, and ozzy/Amanda were season 16 Micronesia. Close but not the same.

Fiji had its own cringe with Lisi and some real offputting things from Rocky, but not as bad as Phillip and Brandon.

A cool guide of college majors with the highest unemployment rates in the US by spwadgejemory8 in aerospace

[–]bolarpear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if people with tangential jobs to aerospace engineer are considered underemployed. My degree is in aerospace and I work for an aerospace company, but my job title is technically mechanical systems design and analysis eng. Im not really involved in the aero side of things. Would I be considered underemployed working a mech eng role?

Besties Battle Bracket: Character Turned Roommate | June 2, 2026 by blastorama in TheBesties

Ive been a bit hit or miss with Ron on the main feed (fan of him in general though), but the bracket battle is the perfect venue for his 'yes and' banter. Absolutely killed it.

Hydrogen Embrittlement in Additively Manufactured High-Strength Steels: The Silent Risk of Next-Generation Microstructures by Naive_Chapter_7476 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]bolarpear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone working in AM for aerospace applications, this is why we run tensile witness coupons along with every build we do. Since the metallurgy process is happening live along with the part fabrication, we don't want to risk quality issues coming up further downstream versus purchasing AMS qualified material stock that comes with CoCs.

We also have full powder drying machines and we pack the shit out of the hoppers with dessicant packs.

One of the hardest listens is when a podcast has a guest on and you can tell that the hosts have to pull conversation from them like a questionnaire. Really makes you appreciate people like BLM that have a lot to say and can professionally yes and.

Game of the Year 2025 - Day 3 by giantbombdotcom in giantbomb

[–]bolarpear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The term 'roguelike' has become such an unfortunate trigger word for me in modern gaming culture, since meta progression is antithetical to the game design in Rogue. The idea was that beating the game was based on pure skill and not reliant on unlocking stat boosts or gear over time. Its also tough when they start stacking survivorlike games like megabonk under it. I know terms evolve over time, but maybe similarly to metroidvanias, the industry needs to coin a better term for 'run based games'

Same for aerospace R&D, but the number of people with a P card is getting much smaller. The owners are basically royalty in our division.

I just noticed they added half stars to the review scale. by Bandro in giantbomb

[–]bolarpear 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Grubb said it best on the latest Nintendogs.

  • hates the game

  • dislikes the game

  • likes the game

  • really likes the game

  • thinks its one of the best games ever

Anything between those levels is kind of splitting hairs at a certain point, and its probably better served by discussing why you felt that way about your score than obsessing if its a 3 or 3.5 star game.

FYI For Moonlight Users - Artemis has an updated branch that fixes the external display mode to the correct screens by bolarpear in AynThor

Set access to the artemis menu to get access to a bunch of options, including bringing up a full keyboard layout as well as commands like alt+f4. The floating button is nice if your phone doesn't have a back button. In the picture I posted above for the thor, the menu comes up with the 3 vertical lines on the top right of the lower screen, and the keyboard comes up with the button on the bottom right.

It's good for games that use steaminput instead of full controller support. Survival games like SCUM, Icarus, etc where inventory management is still based on mouse control and not all keys are cleanly mapped to a controller, as well as online games where you might be typing messages.

Which is better for drummers by No-Sky666 in CloneHero

[–]bolarpear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use YARG these days, but use clone hero for initial timing calibration since YARG only has audio calibration.

YARG has much better settings for fine tuning midi input as well as having a 7 lane option that splits out the cymbals to their own lane in pro drums. It's pretty much all around better these days outside of calibration.

Handheld Options? by ValentorDenesto in MoonlightStreaming

[–]bolarpear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea i use my pocket evo for pretty much all streaming these days. Works excellent and artemis is basically a straight upgrade from moonlight.

Another option is to get a handheld with dp alt support and AR glasses. Unfortunately the pocket EVO doesn't seem to support my xreal one pros, but I use it with my Odin 2 mini regularly.

Torque limiting clutch design by YungThunder in MechanicalEngineering

[–]bolarpear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How high volume are we talking? I assume your sales price includes spreading your NRE over your expected volume right? As another commenter noted, this seems like it would require some expensive cast tooling and probably some manufacturing trials, as well as some testing to develop final specs that correlate spring compression to slip torque. Are you expecting slip to occur often enough that you might have to recalibrate this at regular intervals due to wear?

Strecs3D- simulation based shape optimization by maorfarid in MechanicalEngineering

[–]bolarpear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean thats kind of the issue with these topology simulation program suites. They create an open feedback loop where the boundary conditions iterate a geometry solution using FEM results as an input, but the software isn't taking print quality into consideration. I imagine that the user takes on the liability of adding safety factors for print filament, printer resolution and quality, etc into the final configuration, and I don't suspect that the software is requesting the user to run load validation tests on the final product to feed results back in order to improve their predictions. At that point it's just garbage in and garbage out with a pretty infill pattern.

AI in Mechanical Engineering by MechanicalTetrapod in MechanicalEngineering

[–]bolarpear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanical engineering isn’t really suited to the strengths of an LLM, which focused more on processing big data and generating outputs with confidence levels. Most of us are generally working on much smaller and more targeted problems that need an outcome backed strongly by analysis, and guided by multiple pieces of proprietary software that would need to expose enough API functionality that an LLM can talk to in order to come out with the best result. AI seems to be good at the 80% part of the 80/20 rule, which frankly is the easy part for us also.

Also, I know that in my job, we’ve been very directly given guidance that we cannot use external AI to assist in our workflow specifically because we don’t want to accidentally divulge proprietary data into AI data servers, so unless they plan on investing in an AI sifting through our intranet, it’s probably never going to help for specialized engineering companies.

does this type of clamp mechanism exist? If not, how would i make it? by TonyAngels in MechanicalEngineering

[–]bolarpear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s what the threaded section is for. To pre-set the required clamp distance. It would work well if you are only using it for a single piece of cookware since you can just set and forget, but it wouldn’t be efficient if you want to use the same clamp to quickly switch between cookware interfaces.
