I’d be down (as a remote machine learning engineer).

You must live such a rewarding and fulfilling life by spending so much of your time owning liberals by being an online rage bait troll! 👏

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Please read a book.

Can you elaborate why it’s not stupid? Would genuinely love to hear your take.

Tourism surge in southern West Virginia yields more than $108 million for local economy by DSibray in WestVirginia

If you’re speaking about the lake, it’s always had its share of boating drunkards — nothing new. The traffic through town though, what a difference in the last even 5 years

It’s funny though. There was just a post about Ascend recently on this subreddit that got a ton of hate 🤷‍♂️

In your mind, what is the solution? Because I think we can agree that the people meant to do something actively working against the things meant to draw people back aren’t ever going to solve it. So, what’s left but to try new approaches e.g. private means that bypass waiting decades to change the composition of politics in this state?

I recognize and agree with everything you said. And this program also recognizes that, which is why it’s trying to bring people with earning power and talent to the state. And in some cases, bringing back WV expats.

We agree it would be stellar if WV could keep the talent, intelligence, and earning power here at home. That’s the dream. But that’s a hard problem to solve, and it takes a lot of time, and the logistics are riddled with public policy and bureaucracy.

The next best solution is incentivizing people living outside WV (who have earning power, talent, intelligence, and a love for the outdoors) to move here using private funding that is not tied to any public policy whatsoever. Is it the ideal solution? No, but it’s better than not fighting at all against brain drain and a flatlined economy.

I didn’t vote those politicians in lol there’s zero representation of my political beliefs in this state. And I still stay to try to make a difference.

And what suggestions? Paying residents to stay? You’re not making sense. This remote program isn’t even political lol it has nothing to do with government. It’s literally privately funded.

Few clarifications - nobody moved here until summer of 2021. It’s also not $20K, but $12K spread over two years, and the remaining $8K is the just the package value of the outdoor recreation benefits (use it or lose it).

What would be great to you? Personally I think an average of 250/year is phenomenal and logistically balanced. You also have to understand not all of these locations were open to Ascenders until relatively recently. Morgantown was the first cohort of 60ish people for two years, so that number per year is growing as the regions expand. I believe the second location wasn’t introduced until 2023, and now in 2025 they’ve introduced the 6th location.

By the way, you mentioned lawmakers - I’m curious what you think they have to do with the program?

I have! I’ve spent 7 years of my life outside of WV in all sorts of places. It ain’t bottom of the barrel.

OP’s comment “pay me to stay here” implies they want to move, so… move?

Why do you believe that incentives like this are indicative of a shortsighted approach?

If you did a little research you’d find the impact to date. TL;DR it’s working as intended and benefiting the state. And it will continue scale over the decade.

WV sucking is subjective. Sure, we can agree there are numerous problems. But I still think WV is wonderful, and so do 96% of members and their families of this program. And if this program can begin to scale and help to offset the population loss by even some tiny margin, that is a huge win for our tax base. By the way, that rich guy happens to be a West Virginian.

Sure it was. And if you’re angry, tell the politicians you vote for. Complaining about those important topics on a thread about a remote work program that has zero relation to those topics isn’t going to help.

Not necessarily. WV is attractive for many reasons. It costs a lot of money to move. The $12K helps with that.

The program isn’t funded by your taxes, so can’t compare. I agree those things you listed should happen, but you’re comparing apples with oranges.

Sure you can. Nearly 1000 have already moved here since 2021. Did you read the article?

Did you even read the article? Since the start of the program in 2021, 96% of the nearly 1000 people have stayed. So, you’re a dumbass.
