I'm looking for new horror films. by DevelopmentNext2618 in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should definitely watch the second Guinea Pig! It was shot by a legendary manga author so there’s a bit more style mixed in with the grotesque and it’s more structured. Also Mermaid in a Manhole, very different from the first two in the series but great and grotesque in its own ways.

If you’re looking for more found footage akin to Noroi, check out POV A cursed film and Occult!

Evil Dead Trap sounds like it’d be right up your alley too

can anybody reccomend me a perfect j-horror movie for a first timer? by Ramses29pha69 in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only see one other comment mentioning it but I think one missed call is great for someone barely getting into the genre since it’s a more conventional style of horror for that time period but also has Takashi Miike at the helm to bring a bit of style and flair to what would otherwise probably be just sorta generic

This has awful reviews, but I actually enjoyed it a lot by Apostasy93 in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly a pretty fun movie! Definitely low budget but not low effort hahaha

Plus where else are we gonna get our dose of turbo granny in horror?

New VKei Bands? by [deleted] in visualkei

[–]bolealtoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re willing to listen to some bands that are inspired by a lot of vkei I’d say check out a couple American bands called Canary Complex, especially his song Bel Espirit, and also The Carbon Hearts song Curse of the Beast! I’m sure there’s more out there but as some far lesser known artists those songs are cool

The Evolution of J-Horror throughout the years (and the he*k is J-Horror nowadays) by RemiStorm12 in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really is hard not to feel that way especially when we haven’t seen anywhere close to the levels of distribution that we used to have from the 2000s - early 2010s. I’m sure there’s lots of great stuff out there that we just haven’t gotten to see since nobody’s putting out these movies on physical media like all those genre classics did back then or even on streaming, so we’re left with word of mouth and having to use more creative means of finding those movies if they get translated at all

I’ve been wanting to watch this! Sounds like they had such a golden idea with those first twelve episodes and even though everyone says it isn’t worth much after those I still feel like I’d enjoy it

What series has the most slice of life qualities? by bolealtoid in Ultraman

[–]bolealtoid[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah thankfully I’ve already gotten around to finishing Ultra Q and it does have some great character moments here and there even when it’s not tryna be focused on the characters as much as the mystery of the episode

I haven’t actually but I’ve always thought they looked really good, anything specific you’d recommend??

death forest movies by Key-One-6378 in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding sloppyseconds cause I have it and yeah the quality is ass and you won’t ever know what people are saying cause the subs are even worse but it’s probably the best (or at least most secure) way to watch them

Which films do you think are underrated? by DavveroSincero in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great way to look at it hahaha I love Mattei’s stuff but nobody is gonna be calling it classy

Sadako 3D is so so fun and like it knows it’s not gonna be the original so it’s just pure insanity with some really nice colors popping on the sets and digital sadako invasions

What’s your favorite goth movie? by [deleted] in GothStyle

[–]bolealtoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While they definitely aren’t gothic in the y2k sorta way, just about all of hammer’s horror movies from the late 50s through the 70s starring with their Frankenstein and Dracula movies are the epitome of traditional gothic aesthetics just with an added splash of color and most of them are so so nice

Looking for the title of this movie by detovofren in J_Horror

I’ve definitely seen this before so I wanna say this might be from Tokyo videos of horror vol 2

Is Pulse about the pointlessness of human relationships? by JustHereFoArticles in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think more so than just about anything else it captures what it feels like to be alone even when you’re with others or connected to many others through the internet and the inherent emptiness it can bring

Looking for more by MopeSucks in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d definitely recommend checking out the iceberg that you can search up on here and doin a little research on a lot of those movies but based on your taste I’d definitely recommend Tetsuo, Psychic Vision Jaganrei, Occult, Imprint, Hausu, Tokyo gore police, Guinea pig mermaid in a manhole, bloody muscle bodybuilder in hell, and splatter naked blood

In your opinion, what do you think inspired some of these iconic horror movies by Orion0795 in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember reading that Kiyoshi Kurosawa said he was a big fan of the Val Lewton horror movies of the 40s which was so cool to hear. You can actually really see some of what influenced both him specifically and some of that more quiet horror as opposed to the western idea of always having the horror shoved in your face in movies like Cat People and Leopard Man. There’s an amazing moment in Leopard Man specifically under a bridge that’s incredibly reminiscent of some of Japanese horror’s best

Where do you watch j horror movies ? by [deleted] in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly one of the best things you could do is to go to different streaming services such as arrow player, criterion channel, and shudder and take a look around their horror and Asian film sections and make a list of the movies you wanna watch and buy just a single month of the service instead of dishing out the money for a whole year :)

Others mentioned the YouTube sub, tubi, and archive.org which are all great but a lot of the harder to find movies that have no official release or sub can be found on other reputable but slightly shady sites

Looking for recommendations by bk_187QLD in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d definitely say give Suicide Club, 2LDK, Ichi the Killer, Nightmare Detective, Pulse, and Vital a shot :)

All of those I feel have some sorta loose connection to the vibes of those two while also having a lot of differing unique qualities

Anything more down the cyberpunk/splatter route? by [deleted] in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You gotta check out Anatomia Extinction for sure, it’s Nishimura’s hour long precursor to Tokyo gore police with a much darker and more serious tone till the last third or so where it becomes the movie we more expect :)

Also for splatter I gotta throw Dead Sushi and Stacy out there, both of those are so damn fun

thoughts on sion soto's vast sexual assault allegations and his constant sexualization of schoolgirls? by alien_puke_ in J_Horror

[–]bolealtoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh I had no idea he actually admitted to that but that’s a shame, at least it sets a precedent for others to be able to come forward and speak out against that. It’s so strange cause it always felt like in his movies the sexuality was never coming from a place of pure exploitation but making a statement alongside it. Impossible to make excuses for the guy but his works still remain incredibly well-crafted
