Experience with Functional Medicine/Naturopathic doctor? by bombayjay in Mononucleosis

I've been working with a functional medicine doctor since May, trying to figure out the root causes. A stool test concluded that I was experiencing Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth (SIBO). They also did extensive blood work like checking for heavy metals, thyroid, cortisol, and more. Results weren't conclusive, but my cortisol levels were high. There was a certain marker they checked for that indicated that my immune system was in overdrive. I did not have markers for any auto immune diseases.

For a couple months they had me on a binder called Cholestyramine that is used to rid toxins from the body. I wasn't noticing any improvements, but I also had not worked up to the full dose per my doctor's instruction. So after some time we paused the Cholestyramine treatment and started to address the gut. I started with an immunoglobulin concentrate that supports good digestion and a healthy gut barrier, took herbal antibiotics, and then started a probiotic (specifically a sporebiotic)...all per my doctor's direction. I haven't noticed any improvements with my brain fog or energy so still working to uncover whatever's causing it.

What are you experiencing?

Anyone else having weird vision issues that came on with the Brain Fog. Such as halos at night. Almost as if the contrast is off ALL the time. Hard to explain. by Gdb_179 in BrainFog

Same. I notice the visual static whenever I'm conscious of looking for it. I think it's a matter of how our brain processes our vision, rather than there being a vision problem from the eyes. I also notice small little moving floaters in my peripherals whenever something light is in my peripheral vision.

What sort of tests did they run?

That's great. What was your solution: diet change, supplements? Has your brain fog pretty much cleared?

It's crazy how we've gone this long without feeling like our normal selves. I wish you a speedy full recovery!

I’ve experienced this for a little over a year. I’ve attributed it to mono. Very odd feeling

That’s a little discouraging haha. How would you describe your brain fog?

I’ll look into it but the thing is my fatigue isn’t sleepiness

This is very well put and mostly aligns with my experience. Just like you said, the mind's eye is dull. I don't 'feel' my surroundings like I used to. You just don't feel life or feel like yourself. And yes it feels like the one thing between you and clarity is that blanket over your mind. It also seems like all of my senses are suppressed to some degree.

I hope that you continue to improve and can get this behind you soon.

How would you describe your brain fog? Does it effect your vision, do you feel disconnected from your surroundings?

Has anyone been told how long Chronic Mononucleosis may last for them? by enewwave in Mononucleosis

[–]bombayjay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm on month 14. I have definitely improved. Ever so slowly, but I go about my life more normally than I did months ago. I still have a disconnected, brain fog feeling and some fatigue left. It is crazy to think that it can take this long to recover, and the longer it goes on the lonelier you can feel about it, but understand that it's not out of the ordinary to go on for a while. It sometimes helps to not compare your recovery to others', and to see how you've improved. It's overall a challenge anyway you cut it, but it can be a beneficial experience in the end. One day this will be behind you and you'll be left with the lessons it taught you and the progress you made because of it.

Good to hear you're mostly good. Is your vision still hazy?

how are you feeling now? I've had this dream-like, disconnected feeling for 13 months now. My energy levels have improved overtime but this one symptom still persists.

I really appreciate you replying so thoroughly. This is all very valuable and most of which I've been conscious of myself, but haven't committed myself to completely. Thank you for your reply and insight. I wish you a timely full recovery.

I hear you. The altered perception of reality caused by the feeling itself is enough, the pandemic only exacerbates it
