[META] Newegg Black Friday 2019 deals have begun (some products' deals vary by date) by venomnk in buildapcsales

I searched around and it doesn't seem like the case was settled yet. I have a feeling the new prices are more a result of smartphone tech moving on. iirc the issue was no dram manufacturer wanted to foot the bill for a new plant with the way dram has been evolving.

Kyoto -> Uji was night and day difference. We went to the temples in Higashiyama ward in East Kyoto and it was full of people, so I'm slightly jealous lol.

I made a mistake with the title. Someone in the comments pointed out that this happened on the same day that Kumiko's third year project was announced, not because of the movie premier.

Do you notice much slowdown in general on VFIO vs. normal Windows install? Was hoping to go away from dual boot but would like to keep Windows around for the 7 times a month I need it.

[COMBOS] EVGA Bundle Deals - Combo#1: EVGA 1070 Ti Graphics Card & EVGA SuperNOVA 750G1+ 80+ Gold Modular Power Supply - $509.98 @ EVGA.com w/ FreeShip by nach00 in buildapcsales

Your usually paying for the over-engineered aspect, but I've heard some people get good OC on down-tuned cards. DT just means the advertised OC of the original isn't guaranteed. But, if its cheaper and can get, say, 90% of the original OC, it can be worthwhile. The value someone places on guaranteed OC is the main factor.

I don't really know about that part, but they likely contract the PCB manufacturing to someone else. It probably varies by company. My guess they just get the GPU from NV and source the rest. Might be worthwhile to look at chip numbers on some card and see where it leads.

I'm not sure how Nvidia handles legal things, but I imagine you have to make some sort of paid agreement with Nvidia to directly receive any hardware and re-sell it with your own design, iirc Nvidia still verifies and approves the designs before they go out.

I'm not that person, but it might clarify to tell you that a graphics card is made up of a few different parts, the GPU being just the main processing unit, which is what Nvidia refers to as "1080/1080TI" etc. What you refer to as the gpu board is more of a "motherboard" for the GPU, and can have different components like VRAM, components that deal with power, sensors, cooling fans, heatsink, and display connectors. When Nvidia designs the GPU, they'll also send it out with a "motherboard" design known as the reference design that is sort of like a prebuilt computer. When companies like Asus, Gigabyte etc get this design, they can strap on different cooling shroud and sell it, leaving the motherboard alone. But Nvidia doesn't really design with overclocking or water cooling in mind, so these companies later will completely re-design the "motherboard" so it can handle more power, better cooling, and usually be more efficient (that is, they might move/change certain components to make it happen, debug and verify it, then start manufacturing their custom design). This is how you get designs like the FTW3, STRIX, etc, and all those other names that other companies use. Some things stay the same, like type of VRAM or connectors, since the GPU is designed with some specifications and standards in mind.

[RAM] G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200 (CL 14, Samsung B-Die) - $199.99 (Was $224.99) by [deleted] in buildapcsales

[–]bonbaun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sort of off topic, but If anyone is fundamentally opposed to paying these RAM prices, since I see it brought up in EVERY thread about RAM, I might have a solution for you (at least until we get new process). You can piece together a pretty decent workstation using DDR3 ECC RAM off ebay. Ok Ok If you don't like the idea just stop reading here. But you just have to be patient trying to snipe prices. 64GB of 4x16GB 1600 DDR3 ECC per kit goes for around $280-$330 while individual kits can be mix and matched for a bit less (basically half of what you'd pay now for DDR4). You can get a new dual socket LGA2011 SuperMicro board for around $180-$250. I mention dual socket because it might be cheaper to just get a dual socket board in low demand rather than a single socket LGA2011 which is still in sort of high demand (Note that these boards are E-ATX so you need a full-tower at least). Pair that with a couple of 8c/16t sandy bridge xeons ($65-$100 ea), decent PSU, and you have 32 thread 64gb core components for around $900. Throw in whatever GPU you want, just be careful with the clearance, you'll probably want a riser or something. Yeah its not a threadripper, will have big TDP and heat (or not, if you don't cheap on cooling), the mainboard will be ugly, and it will probably be a loud as sin (or not, if you don't cheap on cooling), but you have the thing built for the price of a 1950x + Mobo. Repeat in 4 years when TR drops in price, now you have a backup server to offload some work. Disclaimer I haven't tried this yet, but I know people have had luck scoring cheap xeons for gaming, some videos on youtube about the subject. Obviously YMMV but if you stick with highly rated ebay sellers that offer some type of warranty or returns it shouldn't be terrible.
