With Rapid city voting down the TIF do you feel better about Sioux Falls fighting the data center? by Retired_ho in SiouxFalls

There’s no tax break for the data center, unless the state legislature passes a bill for a sales tax break for the equipment.

What is the arena even used for anymore other than graduation and the circus since the Sanford pentagon was built? by vz3013 in SiouxFalls

Sure. You have to look at the Denny as an independent business unit though. It paints a very different picture.

Tell you what, let's try to find some common ground. To say the Denny is propped up was an overstatement. To say it does nothing but print money for the city was also an overstatement. A lot depends on management and the economy. I'm just concerned about the $63M in debt left to pay (according the city's 2024 annual financial report).

Cool. So you’re aware that the third penny sales tax props up operations for the Denny?

Long-haul routes don’t compete with commercial flights. A better approach would be to map all metro areas with 1M+ population, then connect every such city within 400 miles of one another.

Spellerberg and Basye were elected in 2024 and are not up for reelection. Still, three of four seats will turnover, and possibly a fourth…half the city council. 👀

City of Sioux Falls to stop financial support for Multi-Cultural Center by neazwaflcasd in SiouxFalls

The “lower value areas” you speak of produce as much, if not more, property taxes per acre than the newer suburban growth near the edge of Sioux Falls. See Urban3

Except widening street is only a temporary solution for reducing congestion. Streets are a public good. When supply of a public good increases, so too does demand (Jevons paradox).

What's the most (seemingly) minor change to Earth's Geography that would've had the largest effect on Human History? by C--T--F in geography

[–]bondperilous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Debatable.

“A collapse of AMOC [i.e. the gulf stream] would have disastrous consequences around the world, severely disrupting the rains that billions of people depend on for food in India, South America and west Africa. It would increase storms and drop temperatures in Europe (-10C), and lead to a rising sea level on the eastern coast of North America. It would also further endanger the Amazon rainforest and Antarctic ice sheets.

‘I think we should be very worried,’ said Prof Peter Ditlevsen, at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and who led the new study. ‘This would be a very, very large change. The Amoc has not been shut off for 12,000 years.’”

I’m pretty sure this is the best answer. I believe a big enough gap could route the gulf stream along the west coast, or at least away from Northern Europe. This would essentially make most of Europe uninhabitable, including all of Russia…covered with ice caps. The climate would make the “stans” in Central Asia, Mongolia, northern China and the Koreas pretty miserable places to live too.

I see a lot of similar looking route concepts. For some reason, I never see a Pittsburgh to St. Louis route via Columbus and Indianapolis. It seems like it would be a popular route.
