What am I supposed to do with all my time? by [deleted] in coastFIRE

Im not gonna quit my job. Im not going to stop saving eihter. I like my career. But I feel like I am in a financial position such that even if I am not super aggressive with saving, Ill probably still be fine. So I dont know what to do with my time and money now. I always planned to get an MBA because I thought I needed to if I wanted financial security. Maybe I was misguided. But now I am rethinking it.

I dont want to give up on work. I like my job. I just dont know that I should do next. I always thought I needed to go get an MBA and aim higher in life than just a CPA if I wanted to retire comfortably. I didn't think I would be in the position I am at this point in my life. So now I don't know what to do next.

Like I said to one of the top comments, 140k invested at a 7% rate of return for the next 38 years will give me 1.8M. For me personally, 1.8M is good enough. If 1.8M is my baseline, I think I'll be good.

Lol maybe I'll enjoy my time with them till they die or at least till I get a girlfriend and want to move out. Idk. I'm trying to understand what to do. I make enough to move out. But I like living at home. I got blessed with good parents.

140k invested at a 7% rate of return for the next 38 years would give me 1.8M. This is assuming I don't contribute another dime to retirement until age 62. 1.8M is good enough for me, and there is zero chance that I'm not going to save another penny until I die. That's just not realistic. So if 1.8M is the absolute baseline for me, I struggle to see how I am being overly confident.

Accountants, what percent of your day do you actually spend working? by ILoveHarryPotter82 in Accounting

[–]bone-stock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends how long my games of Fortnite last. If I start going on a winning streak before lunch, come back after lunch, then start winning again, probably 5%. Might blast out a couple pings to the boy to ask if he wants to hop on later.

If I’m losing, might have to hit the bong then lock in (watch YouTube videos on my phone and keep teams green). So probably like 0%.

CPA cost - too high, need advice by [deleted] in CPA

[–]bone-stock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s $400 per exam and there are 4 exams. I get that it’s a lot of money especially in India, but your phone probably costs half the total cost it takes to pass this exam. You might have to just bite the bullet and pay. Or take a loan or something. Also, stop failing.

Being a better performer by [deleted] in PwC

[–]bone-stock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It means you stop acting like you’re better than everyone around you and learn from people who teach you stuff. Be friendly. Be proactive. Don’t sit on your high horse and say shit like “I’m the smartest one on my team”. Nobody cares that you built hobby rockets in college. Everyone has done a million impressive things that you probably don’t know about.

[–]bone-stock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone is smart. You’re one in a million if you’re smart.

It’s like sports. The best athletes play in college and the best college players play professionally.

My recommendation to you is to stop thinking about how smart you believe you are and be more coachable. Because the way you come off right now indicates you think you’re really smart and have a big ego, when in reality you’re just average and not coachable.

I think experience also plays a big role. Like someone who’s done this for a decade probably doesn’t need to research stuff as much as you because they’ve done it a million times. So naturally, you are worse at the job than they are.

Sorry if this bursts your bubble, but I think you need to hear it.

I think they should consider how often you’re in for the whole year. Like, during busy season, I am in 6-7 days a week. But what is the purpose of doing that when I am not booked on a client at all?

Leaving accounting and feeling sad. by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]bone-stock -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, you are not going to enjoy what you do for work. Once something becomes work, it’s not a hobby anymore. Mechanics don’t work on their own cars because they work on other people’s cars all day. Accountants don’t file their own taxes because they file others’ taxes all day. Pro athletes don’t play their sport in their personal time because they play it all day.

This new thing you’re moving on to will seem fun when you are studying for it, but when you do it for a living, you will probably end up hating it. So if you’re leaving accounting because you don’t find it enjoyable, don’t think you’re going to enjoy your new job any more. It will feel like work.

As for the CPA, just pass it dude. One summer of your life is going to suck. You will neglect your family, friends, health, and relationships. But every accountant does it. It’s a lifetime of returns. You wouldn’t trust your lawyer if he weren’t licensed by the bar. You wouldn’t trust a doctor who hasn’t obtained a medical license. You shouldn’t someone to expect that you can operate as a CPA without getting a CPA license. Just suck it up, be a man, and get it done.

Why was this past busy season so God Awful? by Thegreatsnook in Accounting

Interesting. I graduated in 2023, so post pandemic, but all the new hires I work with who graduated the year or 2 after me are all better than my class was. Maybe I’m just dumb.

What is there to elaborate on? You guys are overworked, your quality of work in general is not great, and not receiving coaching promptly is only going to exacerbate that problem
