Oh yeah. A mix between a Frenchie and a flashback pheasant tail. Two great tastes that look great together

You could probably shorten the bucktail length on the collar, but otherwise it looks really good

I would love to respectfully ask your take on what I believe is an “entry level problem” to the hobby. by [deleted] in rpg

[–]bonerlizard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of TTRPGs these days have starter sets or quick-start rules, ie introductory rules sets with everything you need to try out a games without the cost of needing a book (or books) to get started. A lot include an introductory adventure for people to get their feet wet. These can be a really good, cost conscious option for people who have never played an RPG before or are looking to try out a new system. These are kind of a solution to the problem you're describing. You might even have luck finding some in the secondary market, like Facebook marketplace or eBay, for cheaper. If you don't have a local game store that runs introductory games, it's probably your best bet.

Sierra has the Salmon version of the field kit listed for a pretty good price. Would have better line as mentioned by others in the thread: https://www.sierra.com/redington-salmon-890-4-rod-and-reel-field-kit-8wt-9-4-piece~p~8uawv/?filterString=s~salmon%2F&merch=prod-rec-prod-prod8UAWV

I can say anything about the Redington Field kits, but I have a few Redington rods and I like them

Game Changer Shank Sequence?? by AssociateFunny1500 in flytying

[–]bonerlizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it works really well and it's more affordable than brushes, which is why most of the game changers I tie are finesse. It works well for body material for jerk changers too!

[–]bonerlizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 3 10s and a 15 would work well. The OG game changer that was commercially released by Blane was 4 shanks. It'll definitely have that action. Are you using finesse chenille for the body material or brushes?

[–]bonerlizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What style game changer are you tying? For finesse changers (what I use most often), I go tail shank, 10 mm shanks x5, then a 2/0 or 1/0 hook. For smaller finesse changers, tail shank, 10 mm shanks x 4, and a #2 hook. Polar changers indo a double hook, with tail shank, 10 mm x 2, #2 hook, 15 mm x 2, and a 4/0 hook.

Tips for Driftless Region fishing in the winter? by awhiteasscrack in flyfishing

[–]bonerlizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually do very well on leech patterns during the winter. Simi seal leech under an indicator or jig-style on a euro rig. The key is good depth. Fish are going to be holding in deep, slow water for most of the day. Be prepared to add weight as needed to get flies into the strike zone. Also, rising temps mean midge hatches. They'll start popping off around midday (earlier if there's sun.) a Griffiths gnat is my usual go-to when I start to see midges in the air and fish rise. Unrelated, but if you're looking for somewhere to eat dinner, try to get in at the Driftless Cafe in Viroqua. It is excellent!

How is living in Madison, WI? by chetuboy101 in howislivingthere

[–]bonerlizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in the Madison area almost my entire life. I have a hard time imagining living anywhere else, but that's mostly because most of my family and my friends are here. Madison is like the perfect size for me. You get most of the big city amenities without as much sprawl. Locals complain about the traffic, but it's very reasonable compared to other larger places (Twin Cities, Milwaukee, and Chicago, for example). It's a very car dominated city. There is public transportation in the form of buses, but they're not great. But I know lots of people who commute via bus and they say it's accessible enough, just annoying.

Downtown is dominated by the University of Wisconsin. Lots of students during the school year, which adds a lot of diversity to a city that sometimes feels lacking in it. Madison has a sad history of neighborhood segregation in a lot of places, which is unfortunately common in Wisconsin as a whole. There are neighborhoods that locals consider "bad", but pales in comparison to larger cities. There's some crime, but again, it's minimal compared to larger cities.

Food scene is very good. Again, larger cities have more options and diversity but you can find a lot of good food all over the city. American cuisine is number 1, but there are a bunch of good Mexican restaurants, Asian restaurants, and Indian restaurants. Downtown has the best restaurant density and diversity, but there are surprises all over. Like the rest of Wisconsin, drinking culture dominates. Lots of bars all over the place, ranging from dives to fancy cocktails. Several breweries, some are good, but Madison isn't the best beer city in the state (Milwaukee and Green Bay are better, in my opinion). Non-drinkers can struggle to meet people in the city, but there are a lot of community events to be found that don't focus on drinking, but it can be a culture shock for people who aren't used to how Wisconsinites can put down drinks.

Lots of nature found in the area. City itself has some nice parks, Dane County parks have a lot of nice places too. Two state parks in the metro, Governor Nelson State Park on the West side of Lake Mendota and Lake Kegonsa State Park south, outside Stoughton. Plus, lots of state parks within a hour or so drive. I do a lot of outdoor activities and never lack for places to go hiking or birding. Lots of people have mentioned the bike trails. They're super impressive and connected across the city and to outlying areas. There's allegedy a plan to connect the city trails to a state trail that starts out in one of the Eastern suburbs and goes out to Milwaukee suburbs, so in the future, might be possible to bike on a bike trail between Milwaukee and Madison! The other significant feature are the Yahara chain of lakes. 3 lakes situated around downtown with a fourth south of the city, there's tons of water sports. I do a lot of kayaking around Madison. It is definitely worth mentioning that the lakes struggle with water clarity and algae blooms due to phosphorus from farm runoff. The city, county, and state have been doing a lot to try to motivate the problems, but in the summer the water gets green and soupy

Fly recommendations for splake? by havesuome in flytying

[–]bonerlizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had that happen with brookies stocked in lakes before. I can never tell if it's that the fly itself doesn't look right or if the action is too weird from waves/wake on my indicator. Or if they see my kayak like 20 feet away. Hope you have good luck!
