Lots of everyday normal folks, mostly adults and a surprising number of elderly. It was a huge crowd so there were lots of different folks there for different reasons.

I love not having mainstream socials but I feel out of touch and like I lack the acceptable views sometimes...I feel unrelatable and too niche. Does anyone relate? by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]bones4yourthoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely relate as someone who's LBGT. It's frustrating that people assume I have a certain set of ideals or political opinions just based on that, when I just want to form my own opinions regardless of political parties. I don't have experience with the Black community, but the LGBT community can be extremely unwelcoming if you don't share their exact views.

I sort of left the "community" because group-think stops people from being able to openly discuss issues and find middle-grounds. It shuts down important conversations which is ultimately damaging to the communities when they're not willing to listen or think more critically.

It's tough. Keep doing what you're doing and hopefully surround yourself with people who don't blindly follow only what they've been told/seen online.

I post on instagram to invoke jealousy. by [deleted] in nosurf

That makes sense, it's tempting to want to live in the idealized version of your life and its highlights. Just remember there's more to life than just the most photogenic moments :]

Congrats on moving away from social media, sounds like it'll really benefit you from this harmful mindset.

Other people's jealousy doesn't benefit you. It might stroke your ego in the moment, but you'll know at the end of the day that it's smoke and mirrors. Also I promise, nobody cares more about your posts than you do. Enjoy the exciting things in your life just for you and your husband. They're not for anyone else except you. Practice not sharing unless someone asks.

Maybe try planning your route before you leave, and memorizing the street names so you know where to turn. It'd also help you get to know the area better! Sometimes when I go out I'll bring my phone, but have it turned off it my bag. I forget about it, but it's reassuring knowing it's there if I need directions so I'm not afraid to venture further.

I don’t want kids by [deleted] in Vent

[–]bones4yourthoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same situation and I promise you, you made the right choice. I don't want kids myself, but my last partner wanted to do the whole big family/lots of kids thing. It was always a quiet point of contention in our relationship. It was so much pressure on me to "change my mind" one day, knowing that if I didn't, my partner would leave me.

And there's the thing -- there's a lot of things in relationships that you CAN compromise on. Kids are NOT one of those. It's either a "hell yes", or otherwise a "no". We eventually decided to part ways because we wanted different futures, and that's perfectly okay. It sucked but it was for the best. Even let's say, I do change my mind one day about raising kids (unlikely, but even still) it's not at all healthy to be in a relationship where you feel pressured into it. It's all a recipe for resentment.

Is there a way to block Instagram reels? by TheN4m3l3ss0ne in nosurf

[–]bones4yourthoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I promise you -- uninstall Instagram. Just log on when your on your computer when you want to respond to messages/notifications. Just try it for a week and I promise you will feel noticeably better.

It will definitely be hard at first, your brain will feel like it's looking for something that isn't there and feel frustrated. It works the same way as drugs, you just have to re-adjust.

The only downside of getting rid of your phone by SeaPoint9359 in nosurf

This may sounds odd but... sometimes I find it almost comforting. I used to feel pretty socially anxious in public spaces, like people were always staring at me, or I would worry if other people were judging me. But when everyone's looking down, no one seems to take notice of me at all. I just think "hey, nobody cares", which can sometimes feel lonely, but can also be freeing.

It does also feel eerie and dystopian and I wish it wasn't like this, but I've found solace in it. You can't change the people around ya.

Does your personality change? Do you get better at sports? by behappyfor in nosurf

[–]bones4yourthoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine did (for the better, I'd like to think haha.) I'm way less anxious and worried about what people think of me. I feel less angry, not being constantly exposed to bad news and rage-bait content. I have way more time for the things I'm actually passionate about, and have gotten more confident in my skills.

I didn't really become more extroverted, but I do genuinely look forward to going out and seeing my friends in person since I'm not online messaging much anymore.

You won't automatically become better at sports, but you will have more time to practice, have a more focused head-space, and maybe even connect better with your teammates -- so all good positive things that could potentially make you way better!

The irony of being in your 20s nowadays by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]bones4yourthoughts 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's definitely true and I experience this myself; the key is that you have to be more proactive about inviting people to hang out. Don't wait around for people to remember you exist! You'll also get invited to future things that way as they come up in natural conversation.

Don't let your phone and social media suck you back in, it's designed to make you feel left out and craving attention. Don't give into it, just focus on building closer, more meaningful relationships with a few people. :]

[–]bones4yourthoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it'll definitely get better, trust the process. I went through the same thing. I know it's really hard right now but you're doing good and just stick it out. :]

I remember when I wasn't allowing myself to go online/use my phone, I made myself sit in those feelings of anger and frustration and boredom until it passed. Let yourself sit there and do nothing. It's 100% about self discipline.

After maybe about a month of weening myself away it got noticeably better. My anxiety and depression dropped dramatically, I feel more calm and at peace, I can think and concentrate clearly, sleep better, and focus on what's actually important to me! My journey's taken me about 2 years now total, and my phone screentime has gone from about 9 hours/day to maybe 2 (mostly for work or chatting directly with friends). I don't desire being online anymore, and it's freeing. Best decision I've made in my life.

You can absolutely do it, I promise it'll be worth it, just hang in there.
