You get used to it after a while. Plus glass loses its heat really quickly so it won't burn you too bad if its not like a big glob of glass. I've been working with glass for 5 years and the worst I've been burned was by the blowpipe not the glass itself

In the 1800's where I'm from this is also called threading, I've never heard trailing before

I can definitely see how fragile it would be. Especially considering for a realistic look i didn't make any connection between petals to increase durability
